I Don't Remember

The Night

"It's okay," I started. "He can stay." Dr. Horan looked at me like a grew an extra head.

"You sure?" I nodded.

"He can stay but I want you to too." He seemed surprised by this. He nodded as he sat down in one of the chairs on the other side of my bed. I couldn't help but notice him glaring that the other two boys in the room.

"Carly," one of the boys - Louis I think - said. I looked over at him.

"You really can't remember anything?" He asked in a soft voice.

"Not a thing," I said. Silence fell over us.

"Can we explain things to her?" Sammie suddenly asked. That would be nice because I am still lost. How did I get to know all these people?

"I think that if you take it little by little everyday she should be fine, but you can't force too much on her. She might get sick or tired easily. She also might not remember everything you say if you say too much," he said. All I heard was I will be understanding more and more everyday.

"But I can start explaining things to her?" Sammie asked him. He nodded.

"But tomorrow," he said. "She needs to rest up for it."

"Where are my parents?" I asked.

"They are in Africa," Louis said.

"Why aren't they here yet?"

"They're in a village with no mail or reception. We've been trying to contact them but they are coming back tomorrow," Harry explained.

"And Joey will be on break tomorrow," Sammie squealed then paused. "Joey is our sister, a year younger than me. She's in med school and you always told her to stay no matter what. You're a police officer and was always in jeopardy of being hurt." I nodded though my head was beginning to hurt. A lot.

"I think that is enough for her today," Dr. Horan cut in. "You all can come back tomorrow at seven."

"Don't think I won't be back at seven sharp," Harry snapped at him. He stood up and stalked to the door. He looked back at me and his expression softened. The side of his mouth lifted slightly and then he left.

"We'll see you tomorrow bright and early," Louis said. "I'll make sure to talk to him." That last comment seemed to be directed to Sammie and maybe even Dr. Horan. He leaned over and kissed Sammie on the cheek.

"I'll meet you outside," he said softly. He smiled at me before he left too.

"Carly I'm leaving for the night. Be careful," she said glaring at Dr. Horan as she said it.

"I'll see you tomorrow then," I said back. She kissed me on the forehead and left the room as well.

"I'll leave you to sleep," Dr. Horan said. He turned off the light and grabbed the door to close it.

"Wait," I said. He peaked his head back in. "Umm...They all seem to hate you and not want you to be my doctor. Why?" He seemed a bit surprised by the question, then his face went back to the emotionless expression I had seen all day.

"I'll tell you another day. For now get some rest. Your friends will be back early tomorrow." He closed the door behind him, shutting out all the light.

I snuggled into the warm bed and pulled the blanket to my chin. I closed my eyes and willed sleep to come. But of course it wouldn't. My mind was everywhere. Today I woke up knowing only that my name was Carly Roland. I found out I have parents in Africa, a sister in med school, a sister who was here when I woke up, two best friends, a boyfriend, and somehow I know my doctor. Long day. Sleep eventually pulled me under and I slept a dreamless sleep.
