Second Chances

I run as fast as my little feet can take me.

Crying, heavy breathing, and physical activity are not a good combination.

Especially when you’re about three months pregnant.

I make it to my house as fast as I can.

Mom’s car is in the drive way.

Mom can’t see me like this.

I can’t tell her what happened.

She wanted to trust Zayn.

But when I tell her what he did, I could only imagine what will happen.

I feel a lump in my chest.

As if something is rising up to my throat.

I know that feeling.

I race to the quickest tree and throw my apple up.

Mom soon comes behind me when I finish.

“Ana. What are you doing home?”

I can’t find a way to tell her.

All my words are gone.

I collapse into her chest and cry.

Mom rubs my back soothing my body.

“Sweetie. I need you to tell me what happened.” She says.

More cries come out.

“Was it Zayn? Tell me Ana. I can’t help you if you don’t talk.”

I nod my head and Mom leads me inside.

She sits me on the couch and I take a deep breath.

I stutter my words out.

“K-Kat tied condoms up to my locker. And she put a poster up making fun of me.”

“Kat?” Mom questions.

I nod and continue.

“Zayn punched Harry because he thought he did it, and then Harry told me and the whole school about a bet they made.”

Mom looks furious.

“Who’s Harry?”

“He used to or is still friends with Zayn. Him and Kat used to date.”

“And what was this bet?”

“The both of them betted to see who can get in mine or Kat’s panties first. Harry said Zayn won for getting in mine first and he will get a bonus for getting me pregnant.” I cry.

Mom has murder in her eyes.

“And Kat?” she grits through her teeth.

“She was part of the bet too. Zayn owes Harry money for lasting longer with her.”

“Did Kat know about the bet before she went and damaged your locker?” Mom asks.

“No.”

Mom nods and looks away.

“So Kat and Harry humiliated you and Zayn made you look like a fool in front of the entire school?” she asks.

“It’s not the first time.”

Her eyes widen.

I can tell she has her sights set on something violent.

“Oh Ana.” She whines.

Similar to when I first told her I was pregnant.

“Listen to me Ana. As much as I want to yell in Zayn’s, Kat’s, and Harry’s face, I’m going to act like none of it happened. What they did to you is only going to make you stronger. I take back everything I said to you about giving Zayn a chance. I will always be here for you and I’m going to help you when the baby comes.” Mom confesses.

I wrap my arms around her and she holds me.

“And another thing Ana.” Mom says.

“Yes?”

“You are not going to give your first child up for adoption. Do you understand me?”

“Yes Mom.”

We sit on the couch holding each other.

Mom caresses my baby bump.

I can only think what Zayn is doing right now.

Kat is probably letting her emotions run like crazy.

She should feel stupid.

Harry is probably fixing his nose trying to jump to the next girl.

But who would want him after the bets he makes.

Zayn is probably beating himself up.

But if he really cared about the baby, he would’ve been here.

“Do you want me to fix you something to eat?” Mom asks breaking me out of thought.

“Yes please.”

Mom kisses my forehead and stands up to walk towards the kitchen.

I lay back and run my hands over my bump.

I told Mom I wasn’t giving the baby away.

I hope I can handle it.

“Ana.” Mom calls to me.

“Yes Mom?”

“I’m going to run to the grocery store. Do you want to come or will you be okay by yourself?”

“I’ll be fine here.”

“Okay sweetie.”

Mom grans her purse and walks out the door locking it.

I walk into my room and pick the sonogram pictures of the baby out of my trash.

I straighten it out and hang it on my wall.

Every day, I will look at my new responsibility.

The doorbell rings frightening me.

Must be Mom.

I walk out my room and see that she left her house key on the counter.

She always does that.

I grab it and open the door.

But it isn’t Mom who is at the door.

Zayn stands in front of me holding his cheek.

Someone must have hit him.

“You have some nerve coming here.” I spat.

“Ana. Please.” He begs.

Here we go again.
