Her Last Hope

High Tide

An eccentric mess, Jovi stumbled toward her favorite hideout: the lifeguard chair. It was a beautiful night; the waxing gibbous moon glistened on the calm waves of the lake. After what seemed like a lifetime, she reached the top of the chair that was glazed with a thin layer of frost. In one hand she tightly grasped a half empty bottle of Patron and in the other, a clear baggy full of hydros. She sighed deeply, gazing up at the moon with her tired eyes. A tear rolled down her cheek as she popped two of the tiny, white pills. Chasing them with the strong tequila, she winced. Her throat burned a bit. Hands quivering, she threw three more pills into her pretty little mouth and swallowed. She took the last sip of Patron and plopped down unto the lifeguard chair. Her head was spinning and the once beautiful moon had become a blur.

One new text message.
What did HE want?

Keiff <3 : Babe. I'm sorry about earlier. I didn't mean it. Please tell me where you are. I'm worried.
Me: I'm at the chair. You're too late.
End of Jovi's POV

Rolling her eyes, she tossed her phone into the sand. She clumsily made her way down the steps of the lifeguard chair. Once her feet hit the ground, her knees buckled. After a few attempts to get up, she shakily rose to her feet. Making her way into the water, step by step, she began to shiver. She turned around to make sure that no one was watching. The beach was dead silent. It was time. A grin formed on her distressed face as she lowered herself into the water. She took one last breath and with that, her head was under. Apparently, this was the most peaceful way to go. She inhaled deeply, water filling her lungs. Her eyes grew wide with fear. Again. She forced herself to take another breathe. This time, she felt as though she could explode. Her body began to convulse. She was fighting to get to the surface for some air. Just before reaching the top, she lost consciousness. Her eyes, still wide open, caught a glimpse of the red and blue lights flashing through the water. And with that, everything went black.
