Half A Heart
Chapter Five
After Aimee introduced herself to me that one day in class, school got much better and I learned how to avoid questions and comments about me and Liam, which made focusing on school a million times easier, which brought my grades up, which made me happy.
Sure, my doctor doesn’t think I need to be off my anti-depressants yet, but at least I’m down to only two a day. That’s good, right?
“How was class?” Quin asked as soon as I walked through the door.
“Not bad.” I shrugged and plopped down on the couch. “How was yours?”
“Terrible.” She groaned and sat down next to me. “My history professor is a nasty pervert who grabbed his T.A.’s ass today in front of the whole class thinking we couldn’t see.”
“Gross!”
“I know!”
“Isn’t he the one who’s in his fifties?” Quin moved her head up and down to confirm my answer. I shuttered.
“So then, after she excused herself to the bathroom, he tried to make a pass at me!” I mentally threw up.
“Didn’t you have a test today?”
“Yes! Even after I told him I was happily in a relationship, he told me that my boyfriend didn’t have to know, so I then handed him my test and walked out as his T.A. and the Dean walked in. Apparently I missed a good show. So I don’t have a history class for the rest of the week so they can find a new professor.”
“Serves him right.” Quin’s ringtone for Niall played throughout the room.
“I’ll be right back. I’ve gotta get—“
“Yeah, yeah. Go be couple-y and shit.” I waved her off and walked into the kitchen to grab a drink from the fridge.
Liam’s POV
I clutched the tub of ice cream to my chest as I re-watched some T.V. movie that was on the night before. I hung onto every word that was said up until the big proposal at the end. How come she said yes and Melody didn’t? Oh my god… did I not ask her to marry me?! Did I ask her something else?! I played back the entire night in my head for what seemed like the millionth time.
_______
I got to the hotel room after the show where Melody was pacing, her bags packed. “What do you mean you think we should break up?” I asked her as I stood in the doorway, praying it wasn’t true.
“I just think we’re moving a little bit too fast! We’ve barely been together five months.” She ran her tiny hands over her huge hair.
“Then we’ll slow things down.” I said and walked over to her, wrapping her in my arms.
“I can’t do this, Liam. I… I need some time to myself.” She pushed her way out of my grip and grabbed her suitcases. “I booked a flight for tonight so I’ve really gotta get going.”
“Please don’t do this.” I muttered, just above a whisper.
“You’re ready to settle down, and I’m not. I can’t do this to you. I can’t… I can’t make you wait until I’m ready. It’s selfish. I don’t even know if I ever will be ready.”
“I’ll wait. However long you need, I’ll wait for you.”
“Do me a favour?” I nodded, signaling her to continue. “Find someone who’s ready.”
“I don’t want to find someone else.”
“I’m sorry.” Melody whispered and took in a deep breath. “I love you.” She brought her soft lips to my cheek before walking towards the door.
“I love you, too.” I heard my voice crack as she walked out of the door, leaving me alone.
______
No I definitely asked her to marry me. I thought I did it right! I stood up and turned the tele off and put the ice cream away before heading into my room and turning in for the night. Maybe tomorrow would be better.

“Rise and shine, lazy ass!” Niall’s voice rang out through the room as I slowly woke from my slumber. “It’s two in the afternoon and you’re going on a date tonight!”
“I don’t remember making plans.” I yawned and instinctively reached for Melody. Damn, I was a wreck.
“That’s because your best friends in the entire world made them for you. Now let’s get you ready.”
