Half A Heart

Chapter Three

Melody’s POV

“I don’t know, Lance was kinda weird.” I shrugged as Quin and I walked around Tesco’s for some much needed groceries. “He did this thing with his unibrow anytime anything remotely sexual was brought up.”

“Why are you bringing up sexual things on a first date?!” Quin yelled as an elder woman walked by us. “Sorry.” She mumbled as the woman eyed me on her way out of the aisle.

“I didn’t bring it up, okay. He did.” I shuttered at the thought. “The point is, there will definitely not be a second date.”

“When was the last time you had a second date?” Quin asked as I grabbed a pack of frozen chicken breasts.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “Should we get frozen or unfrozen? Frozen is cheaper and lasts longer, but unfrozen—“

“Mels! Would you talk about your disaster of a dating life for two seconds!?”

“Ouch.” I muttered and decided to go with the frozen chicken. “Look, just because my dates haven’t been that—Liam.” I stopped dead in my tracks as I saw him in another aisle.

“Exactly. Liam! You miss Liam!” Quin yelled gaining attention from passing shopping.

“No… he’s here.” I shushed her as I debated on running the opposite direction. “I should say hi, right? I mean it’s only fair. You date a guy for months, reject his proposal, the least you can do is say hi if you see him in public.” I rambled to myself while absentmindedly pushing the cart forward. Louis’s eyes widened as he looked around for an escape.

“Which one do you like mate?” Liam asked turning with two boxes of cereal in his hands. “Melody?” He paused as our eyes met for the first time in months.

“Dammit,” Louis muttered.

“H-hi,” I gave an awkward wave suddenly not as bold as I had been a few minutes ago. “How are you?”

“Oh that’s original,” Quin rolled her eyes looking around.

“I’m good, great actually. We just got back from tour a few days ago.” Liam responded giving a nod.

I nodded as well, “Yeah I heard. I was going to go to the airport, but…” I trailed off regretting not running the other way.

“Oh, it’s probably good that you didn’t. There was a massive crowd there.” There was a beat of silence. God, I wish this never happened. “I like your hair cut.” Liam said as he put both boxes of cereals in the cart before shoving his hands in his pockets. “It looks good straightened.”

“Thanks.” I smiled awkwardly as I ran a hand over my hair. “Yours looks good, too.”

Quin groaned loudly, “Oh come on this is the most boring conversation. I’m going to get biscuits.” She stalked away.

I looked after her, “I should probably go. It was nice seeing you.”

“You too. See you around, yeah?” Liam gave a smile that didn’t reach his eyes letting me know it was forced. I returned it leaving before I could make any more bad decisions.

“Okay, I’ve seen exes fight, get back together, and completely ignore each other. I would rather have seen him rip your damn hair out than watch that painful exchange of words.” Quin tossed the biscuits in the cart

“It wasn’t that bad.” I rolled my eyes and walked past her to grab a loaf of bread.

Liam’s POV

“Which one do you like better, mate?” I asked Louis as I evaluated both of the cereals in my hands. The second I turned to look at Louis, I wished I hadn’t. “Melody?” I could feel my heart about to burst. She was right in front of me!

“Dammit.” Louis muttered behind me.

“H-hi.” Melody gave a small wave as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. She looked… different. “How are you?”

“Oh that’s original.” Quin’s voice came from beside Melody. Should I say hi to Quin?

“I’m good, great actually. We just got back from tour a few days ago.” Well, I had meant to say ‘hello’ to Quin, but instead, I came up with this and a small nod.

“Yeah I heard. I was going to go to the airport, but…” Her voice trailed off as she looked down at her shoes. She was going to come see me?

“Oh, it’s probably good that you didn’t. There was a massive crowd there.” I saved her from the embarrassment. “I like your hair cut.” I quickly put both boxes of cereals in the cart before shoving my hands deep in my pockets in hopes of getting them to stop shaking. “It looks good straightened.”

“Thanks.” Melody smiled and ran a hand over her hair. “Yours looks good, too.”

“Oh come on this is the most boring conversation. I’m going to get biscuits.” Quin groaned before walked away from us.

“I should probably go. It was nice seeing you.”

“You too. See you around, yeah?” I gave a forced smile before she returned it and walked after her friend.

“That was… painful to watch.” I turned to Louis as he shook his head. “What a bitch.”

“Don’t, man.” I stopped him from saying anything else. “I know what she did to me sucked… but don’t.” I could feel my heart breaking all over again. Maybe it was a bad idea to come to the supermarket.

“I’m sorry, mate. You alright?”

“Yeah… I’m just, you know, gonna go get some more ice cream.” I shrugged and walked off to the frozen section.

“Liam, no!”

Louis’s POV

I practically had to drag Liam to the checkout line to get him away from the ice cream and to Zayn’s car. “Take him! I can’t deal with him anymore!” I said and shoved Liam towards Zayn.

“Whoa, what happened?” Zayn asked and tossed his cigarette down before stomping it out.

“He saw… you know.” I said, trying to be discreet as Liam loaded the groceries into the car. The confused looks on Zayn’s face told me he wasn’t catching on. “Liam, get in the car when you’re finished. I have to talk to Zayn.”

“I’m not five years old. I’m a big boy.” Liam rolled his eyes and loaded the last few bags into the back.

“Just get in the damn car.” I groaned as Liam rolled his eyes, but did as he was told. As soon as the door was shut, I looked at Zayn and explained what happened. “And then they went their separate ways.”

“No… she wasn’t in there. I would have seen her go in and sent you a message or something.”

“She must have been in there before we got there.” I ran my hand over my chin. God, I needed to shave.

“No…”

“Yes!”

“No!”

“Yes!”

“…Yes!” Zayn pointed over my shoulder to where Melody and Quin were walking out, laughing at something.

“Told you! But he went to get more ice cream after that.”

“You didn’t let him, did you?” Liam had been eating ice cream nonstop since we had been back since he considered it his ‘comfort food’.

“Of course not! I’m not an idiot!” I rolled my eyes. “He got cookie dough instead.”

“Louis!” Zayn scolded me as we got into the car.

“Sorry! Just, look at him and tell me if you could tell him no.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Zayn waved me off as we pulled out of the car park to head back to Liam’s apartment.
