Half A Heart
Chapter Twelve
Melody’s POV
Liam refused to let me carry my own bags inside, so I sat in the familiar living room while he dragged my two duffle bags through the front door. “Okay, maybe I need a little bit of help.” He muttered as he looked at the staircase in front of him. I laughed and jumped up, taking one of the bags from his shoulders.
“You think this is bad? You should see Quin. This is what she packs for an overnight stay.” I shook my head as I followed him up the stairs to the guest bedroom.
“Alright,” Liam groaned as he set my bag down on the ground. “Bathroom is to the left, my room is right across the hall if you need anything, and—“
“I used to live here, remember?” I smiled as he nodded, as if he suddenly remembered.
“Right, that’s right. Okay, well I’ll help you get settled in, then.” I nodded and opened my first duffle bag, pulling out sweaters and jeans, folding them up and placing them neatly in a drawer. “Wait is this one of mine?” I looked over at Liam as he held up an old pullover.
“No, I think that’s one Mitchell gave me a while back.” I shrugged and continued unpacking.
“You kept one of his old sweaters?”
“He gave it to me when he and I first got together.” I explained and took it from him and put it away. Liam reached around me and pulled it out of the drawer. “What?”
“Why do you still have it?” Was he really getting jealous over a pullover?
“It’s warm.” I said and tried to grab it from him, but he put it out of my reach. “What are you doing?” I groaned. “Come on, it’s the warmest one I’ve got.”
“I don’t want you wearing it anymore.”
“Excuse you?” I couldn’t believe him! It’s just a pullover!
“You can’t wear it anymore.”
“Oh, so now I can’t wear it? Liam it’s just a pullover. It’s not like every time I look at it I think about him and miss him.” I rolled my eyes and placed my hands on my hips.
“Really? Then how come you could tell me who gave it to you?”
“You asked me if it was yours and I answered!”
“A simple ‘no’ would have sufficed.”
“You would have asked whose it was.”
“Then you could have lied.”
“Then you would have asked more questions! Look, I was honest with you and if it’s such a big deal to you I’ll throw it out. Jesus.”
“Thank you.” Liam stretched his arm out with the pullover and I snatched it from his hand and tossed it to a corner of the room. He was being absolutely ridiculous! It was just a damn pullover. It didn’t have any sentimental value.
The rest of the night was spent unpacking, eating dinner, and watching tele in silence before he watched me walk outside and throw the stupid pullover in the trash.

The next morning we ate breakfast in silence until Liam finally spoke up just before I finished. “I’m sorry I made you mad last night.” He still didn’t look at me.
“It’s fine.” I shrugged and walked over to the kitchen and placed my bowl in the sink.
“You have to understand my jealousy, though… don’t you?”
“No. I really don’t. I don’t have any kind of emotional attachment to it. It’s just a warm pullover to me now, or it was anyway. You owe me a new one that’s at least twice as warm.” Liam cracked a smile and kissed my forehead.
“I’ll be right back.” I sighed as he ran up the stairs and I rinsed out my bowl before setting in the dishwasher. Liam was back before I could even shut the dishwasher. “Here.” He smiled and handed me a light blue pullover.
“Thank you.” I smiled and kissed his cheek.
“Try it on.” I threw the pullover on and instantly fell in love with it. “I think it’s one of yours that you left here.”
“Definitely not.” I shrugged and looked down at it. “I think I would remember this one.”
“Huh. Must be one of Danielle’s.” Liam shrugged and turned towards the sink. I stood there and waited for him to tell me he was joking. That it was Jaymie’s or that he bought it for me.
“I’m sorry. Who’s?”
“Danielle’s.”
“Wow.” I shook my head and pulled the top off.
“What?”
“So you can get mad about me having an old pullover from Mitchell, but you can let me wear one of your ex’s pullovers?!” I yelled and threw the garment at him. “How is that okay?! Explain to me how that’s okay!”
“Because I’m not the one wearing it!”
“Well no shit, Sherlock! You let your current girlfriend wear your ex-girlfriend’s pullover!”
“Who said you were my girlfriend again!?”
“I… it was out of habit!”
“Well who said I even want you to be my girlfriend again?”
“You!” I resisted the urge to close the space between us by letting my hand meet his cheek. Hard. “You wanted to try and work things out as much as I did so don’t you dare pull that shit on me!”
“Then just wear the stupid pullover!”
“Then let me keep Mitchell’s!”
“No way!”
“Then I’m burning this one!” I picked the blue garment off the ground and stormed up the stairs.
“Melody!” I ignored Liam as I searched the apartment for matches. “Melody, stop!” When I gave up, I went into Liam’s room and found the lighter in the bedside table and walked past him and out to the balcony. “Dammit, stop!” Liam grabbed my hand with the lighter in it and yanked it out of my hand. “God, what the hell is going on with you?”
“Why would you think for one second I would want to wear your ex-girlfriend’s sweater? Especially after you made me throw out a perfectly good one!”
“Because it’s your ex-boyfriend’s!”
“This is your ex-girlfriend’s!”
“Do you see where I’m coming from now?!”
“I wouldn’t have a problem with this if you hadn’t made me throw mine out!”
“Bull shit!” I shoved the pullover into Liam’s arms and ran back inside. “Where are you going?”
“Obviously getting back together isn’t a good idea.” I said and went into the guest room and pulled my duffle bags out from under the bed. “I’m going home.”
“No you’re not.” I had begun to throw all of my things into one of the bags while Liam was unpacking them.
“Why not?”
“Because I’ll burn the damned pullover.” I stopped mid packing. “Look, she means nothing to me anymore and I guess I get why you wanted to keep the pullover, but you also see why I didn’t want you to keep it. I’m sorry if I made you mad.”
“You don’t have to burn it.” I sighed and began to unpack my things again. “I know why you got upset.” I admitted and finished putting my things back. “I was upset that you had kept something of hers.”
“See? We’re working through this! Maybe it is a good idea to get back together.”
“Give it a week. You’ll be sick of me.” I laughed as I tossed the duffle bag under the bed.
“I doubt that.” Liam smiled and grabbed my wrist, pulling me into a tight hug.
