Half A Heart

Chapter Eleven

“As much fun as these past two days have been,” Liam sighed as I nuzzled closer to his chest. “We really need to discuss where we go from here.” I sighed and sat up, holding the duvet to my chest. “I know, I want to avoid this conversation, too.”

“It needs to happen.” I grabbed Liam’s t-shirt off the floor and threw it over my head before turning to face him.

“So where does this leave us?” I took a deep breath and tried to think about a way to reply without upsetting him.

“I don’t know.” Liam nodded. “As much as I would love for us to go back to how we were, I just don’t think that’s possible.”

“What do you mean?”

“I just think that with what happened between us last time, how it ended, I’m not sure if you’ll be completely in it… I wouldn’t blame you at all if you weren’t. I hurt you in a way that I never wanted to.”

“I’d be completely in this like I was the first time, Mel.” Liam sat up, resting his elbows on his knees. “Yeah, what happened hurt me beyond words, but that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to forgive you and move past it. We can see it as a… bump in the road.”

“Liam—“

“We don’t have to do anything about it right now. We can see how things go for a few days and see if getting back together is the best thing for us.” I nodded in agreement as there was a frustrated groan outside my bedroom door.

“Quin?” I jumped out of bed and threw some pants on before rushing to the door and opening it to see my best friend sitting there. “What the hell, Q?”

“I just wanted to see if you two were getting back together anytime soon.” She shrugged as Niall came running out of the bathroom, pausing when he saw me standing in the open doorway.

“I was just coming to, uh, tell Quin that listening in on your conversation was inappropriate.” I rolled my eyes and leaned against the doorframe as Liam walked up behind me and rested his head on my shoulder.

“So… are you two back together yet?” Quin smiled ear-to-ear as she asked. “I mean, I didn’t overhear anything because you two were talking so quietly. I didn’t hear the final decision.”

“We’re taking things slow and trying to figure things out before we—“

“Dude. Don’t answer them.” I looked back at Liam and shook my head.

“Right.”

“Oh come on! We know you guys are going to end up back together and get married. It’s written in the stars!” Quin looked up at the ceiling dreamily.

“The stars?” I raised an eyebrow at my best friend. She had clearly lost her mind.

The stars, dammit!” My eyes widened at her tone. “Sorry.” She muttered and stood up off the ground. “Anyway, you two had better be back together by tomorrow.”

“Why?” Liam asked as he instinctively wrapped his arms around my torso.

“Because I can’t handle hearing all the make-up sex! If there’s going to be make-up sex, then something needs to come out of it in order to restore balance to the universe.”

“Listen, Q.” I stepped away from Liam and took my best friend to the side. “He’s getting ready to go on tour—“

“I know that. I’m dating his bandmate.”

“And I’m still taking extra hours in school and even though I didn’t get the job at the bank, I still need one. We’re not sure if it’s going to work.”

“Excuse you?” Quin turned to me and placed her hands on her hips.

“We’ll never get to see each other or even talk to each other. It’s gonna be really hard to maintain a relationship where you don’t even get to talk.”

“Well you’re going to. I don’t know how. But you’re going to.” I rolled my eyes and placed my hands on my hips.

“It’s not up to you, Q.” I looked over at Liam who seemed to be telling Niall the same thing.

Liam’s POV

As much as I wanted to get back together with Melody, she had a point. We couldn’t just pick up where we left off. It was going to be a lot harder than that.

She walked over to me after she finished her conversation with Quin and placed her hand on my upper arm. “Can I talk to you alone?” She asked and pointed her head out the door of her apartment.

“Yeah.” I smiled and followed her out into the hallway and around the corner, making sure to avoid any wandering ears.

“So what are you thinking?” She asked, keeping her eyes on her feet.

“I’m thinking you were right. It’s gonna be hard to pick up where we had left off.” She nodded and shifted her weight from one foot to the other. “But not impossible.” Melody looked up at me and smiled. “Like I said, let’s give it a few days, get to know each other again and see where it goes from there.”

“I’d like that very much.” I smiled as she stood on her tip toes to kiss my cheek.

“So what I’m going to do now,” I took her hand in mine and intertwined our fingers. “Is go home, get the guest room ready, and you can stay there for a few days while we do this whole ‘starting over’ process.”

“And while you’re there, I’ll get my bags ready.”

“Then I’ll pick you up and take you home—well, my home. Not… not your home. My… home.” I felt the blood rushing to my cheeks as I fumbled over my words.

“I’ll see you in a few hours.” Melody giggled and reached up to kiss my cheek again, but last second I turned my face and stole a quick peck from her lips.

“See you soon.” I buried my hands in my pockets as I watched her walk into her apartment before I ran downstairs and out to my car.
