Misfit

Meeting The Plastics

Beep! Beep! A horn honked from the driveway. Crap! I pulled my navy blazer around my shoulders and pulled my knee-highs up higher; then, I grabbed my house keys and bag. I slid some Dior sunglasses on; it was really sunny in Florida.

Beep! Beep! The honk came again as I slid my feet into my Mary Jane’s. He honked again; scaring me so much that my ankle twisted slightly, missing my shoe and my bag fell from my shoulder.

“Damn it! I’m coming!” I yelled, stomping my foot, even though I knew he couldn’t hear me. He honked again, so I decided to just stand there for a moment, waiting for the next honk. How I could have thought this Grade-A asshole was worthy of being my celebrity crush is beyond me… I picked up my bag and grabbed a pop tart from the kitchen, no longer rushing. I began to open the foil packet when a knock sounded on the door.

Good thing my parents had both left, my father to work and my mother shopping. They’d have a cow about all the honking. I pulled the door open, not surprised to see a sweaty, pissed-off Liam standing there.

“What the hell? I said eight sharp.” He scowled, stepping through the door.

“Sorry, I was coming. You only honked, like, fifty zillion times. I’m a girl. You’re lucky I wasn’t still naked when you got here.” He raised his eyebrow, suggestively but remained quiet. I rolled my eyes.

"Whatever. Are you ready now?" He asked, leaning on the doorjamb.
""

“Yeah, sure. Whatever.” I ate a piece of the pop tart and followed him out the door, locking it behind us. He went over to his car and climbed in. I just leaned against his black Mercedes, eating my pop tart.

“Are you gonna get in?” He asked, rolling down the window. I lifted my shades to glare at him.

“Not until you open my door, no.” He huffed, running his hand through his highlighted quiff. He mumbled something under his breath as he came around to open my door.

“What was that?” I asked, smiling crudely.

“Nothing. Just get in.” I climbed inside and buckled my seat belt. He got in again and started the ignition. “You’re a pain.”

“Well, thank you.” I smiled, emphasizing the sarcasm in my voice. He grunted, obviously choosing to ignore my comment. I fingered the paper airplane necklace Grace had given me for my birthday last year as Liam pulled from my driveway.

When he twisted around a corner, rather sharply, I dropped the chain and gripped my 1D bag harder.

“You okay? You don’t have car sickness, do you?” He asked, glancing at me from the side. He was obviously very concerned about his car.

“I’m fine. And no.” I hugged my bag tighter, my stomach churning at his bat-out-of-hell driving style. He looked at me again and the car stopped for a split second before continuing, as if I’d surprised him.

“You like One Direction?” He asked, looking thoroughly shocked.

“I think ‘like’ is downplaying it.” I smiled, for the first time, my stomach’s uneasiness put aside. “What of it?”

“I just—I guess I like their music.” My eyebrows shot up. I’d never really met a guy who openly admitted that. I would definitely have to spill to Grace. Before I could ask for more details—or anything, really, he said, “Who’s your favorite?”
By impulse, I narrowed my eyes and glared at him, automatically thinking he was being sarcastic.

“Um… I guess Liam. Liam Payne, I mean.” I laughed at my own attempt at a joke.

“Nice.” After that, we didn’t talk anymore. I stared out the window, the wind whipping at my face, to the beautiful beaches outside. They were abandoned, except for the occasional bird residing in every other tall palm tree.

“We’re here.” He said, picking a spot and putting his Benz in park. He got out and began walking away, but realized I was still in the car. “Ugh, and the pain in the ass strikes again.” He mumbled as he snatched my door open.

“Always such a gentleman.” I grumbled, squinting into the bright sun. I lowered my shades and ran my hands over my plaid skirt. “Wow…” I looked up at the school, with it’s tall towers and Victorian feel, which was only intensified by the surrounding students, all dressed like me. The campus was beautiful, framed by lush, bright, palm trees.

I heard people whispering behind my back, but it wasn’t my name I was hearing… How could I? It was my first day. But Liam’s name was recurring. I looked over at him to see if he noticed, but saw no indication, except for the tense and flexing of his biceps.

“You okay?” I asked, surprised that he hadn’t responded to his gossipers.

“Just leave it. I‘m pretty sure we have different classes, so I’m gonna go.” He mumbled, staring at the ground as we entered the school.

“But—“ I started, but he didn’t let me say anything else.

“Hey!” He called to a girl with short, reddish hair. “Natalie, right?” He asked. Her eyes darted to the side, looking around the hall.

“Yeah…”

“Here, show Jay around. She’s new. I think she has to go to the office first.” He said and disappeared before we could even thank him.

I walked into my first class and looked around, choosing the best seat. The center of the back row. That way I wouldn't have to stand and introduce myself and I wouldn't have to answer any questions. My victory was short-lived, however, because the minute I sat down, a tall red head walked over to me.

"Are you new?" She asked, no smile but her hands were firmly on her hips.

"Yeah. I'm Jay." I smiled, being polite as possible, though I just wanted to take my notebook out and work on my fan-fiction.

"Hi, Jay. I'm Madison." She smirked. I opened my mouth to ask her if she wanted anything specific but she cut me off. "Actually, I'm not a very happy Madison. Do you know why?" The snarkiness was present in her tone, making my head hurt.

"No, but I'm sure you're gonna tell me." I said, leaning back in my chair.

"You're in my seat." She said. She immediately killed my mood.

"Yeah, well, I don't see your name on it." And that's when the other two girls appeared.
