The Shadows Behind Us
Prologue
Flash back:
I come upstairs crying. The shadow children comfort me as I walk. I'm 9 years old and they have been with me for over a month now. I've never had my parents. They put my in a foster home the day before the shadows came. I remember that day so clearly. I was mad because my parents went to the movies with my brother without me, so I wrecked my parents home. Threw glass on the floor, broke the wooden table and chairs with a baseball bat my brother had. They were never home anyways. I smash the tv with a knife I found.
They came back home and saw what I had done. They told my 11 year old brother to go upstairs to his room. He nodded and looked at me with pleading eyes. I was still infuriated. I saw my father walk to the house phone and dial a number.
"Hannah, go pack your things. You are leaving," my mother had said. I thought I was just going to grandma's for the weekend, turns out I was in the foster home. My brother came with us so he could say goodbye. He was really the only one who cared. My parents always got drunk and high anyways, but at that time I didn't know. My brother always kept me safe. When we got out, I saw he had tears in his eyes.
"Don't forget me, Louis. I love you," I say. I give him a bear hug, and we both shed tears.
"I love you too. Hannah, I promise when I'm old enough I will come back and get you. I promise," he said holding out his pinky. I took his pinky in mine and we both kissed our own hands. Tears streamed down my face. Not only out of sadness of leaving the only person who cared about me, but out of anger at my parents. I let go of him and go over to them.
"I hate you. You were never good parents and I'll always hate you," I say in my 4th grade Europe accent, "you're sorry excuses for parents and never loved me. You always got drunk and high. Burn in-" I stop before saying the word.
"Hell. Burn in hell."
the next day I woke up to shadows in front of my face.
"Who are you?" I asked the showdown people. They didn't talk physically, but inside of my brain.
We are the shadow children. We are here to have fun with you!
I nod my head, eager to finally have friends. Finally have friends. I sit up on my bed and cross my legs.
"So who is who? My names Hannah," I say holding my hand out to shake. They all introduce themselves. There's Gail, Drake, Earnest, Jay, Alley, and Elizabeth. They all shake my hand.
"How old are you?" I ask them.
Ten, they reply. All of them ten, an yet I am nine.
from that day on until middle school we were best friends. People would laugh at me and make fun of me, but I didn't care.
In middle school they started getting abusive because people wanted to be my friend. They didn't want that. Guys started to ask me out, and people invited me to parties. I wondered what had happened to Louis. By the time he was old enough to get me out, he never came. What became of the Louis I used to know.
Louis, you broke your promise.
the shadow children was getting jealous, and that wasn't good.
