Feeling Safe With Danger
Chapter 41
My mom and dad both went to stand at the ends of the table where their chairs were. There was one seat on one side of the table and two on the opposite side.
I walked over to the side with two chairs next to each other, Harry appeared next to me.
"Harry, why don't you seat here and Lane can sit by Vana?" My dad pointed to the lonely seat.
This angered me, I could tell my dad was trying to separate Harry and me, but I was thankful Harry didn't argue, though I knew he was irritated. Lane had a smirk on his face as he took the seat beside me.
The whole dinner was actually a lot of fun. Lane was telling us different stories of all his travels and different adventures.
My dad and mom and I were left laughing our butts off when he finished a story of how he sneezed on J.K Rowling during a business deal.
After I was finished laughing I looked over at Harry, I felt bad because we had been ignoring him the entire time, and dinner was almost over. He knew how much my parents loved Lane and I wasn't making it any better by my happy demeanor. He looked a little sad as he played with the leftover food on his plate.
Somehow, the topic changed to me and eventually Lane was handing out compliments like no other.
"Vana is one of the most intelligent girls I have ever seen. Her future husband is a very lucky man indeed. I can see her ending up with a charming, smart, caring, wealthy man."
I blushed a little at his compliment, though it was a little insensitive. I looked over at Harry and his eyes were wide as he noticed the redness in my cheeks.
Lane continued, this time he turned to face me as he placed a hand on my shoulder.
"Don't ever sell yourself short, Vana. You are a beautiful girl who deserves the best kind of man there is."
"She sure does." My dad smiled at Lane.
"I can't imagine how proud you two must be of her." Lane spoke to my parents. His compliment made me smile widely.
"Lane, you're being too sweet." I shyly said.
Lane's blue eyes met mine. They were shining brightly with a glimmer of hope. He looked so happy. I loved it when he was this way, his happy, kind self. His aura always seemed to brighten my mood. I smiled at him, then I heard Harry shift in his seat. My smile dropped when I saw Harry's eyes narrowed on mine.
Lane removed his hand from my shoulder. I guess I didn't realize what this scene might have looked like to Harry. It made me feel a little guilty.
"Vana and I have gotten along very well since I moved here. Why I was practically taking care of her while you two were away!" Lane turned back to address my parents. Harry definitely did not like Lane saying that.
"We are so thankful for that!" My mom said.
"If we ever have to go out of town, we know who to inform to keep an eye out for Vana. We know she is safe around you, Lane." My father said.
"Of course! I will always look out for her best interest and not my own." Lane said as he quickly glanced at Harry giving him a wink. I knew he was trying to taunt him as if to say Harry is with me for his own benefit and not my well-being.
I noticed Harry's grip tighten on his water glass. I didn't dare look at his face.
Then my dad cleared his throat.
"So, Harry what do you do for work?" Harry shifted in his seat before answering the question.
"I work in a sporting goods store." I gave him a reassuring smile.
"Are you the manager?"
"No, I just help sell goods."
"Does that even pay well?" My dad's eyes narrowed down on Harry as Harry looked down at his plate.
"Dad!" It was so rude of him to say that.
"It's okay, Vana. It gets me by, sir." Harry bit down on his lip nervously. Despite the tension in the room, I couldn't help but marvel at Harry's sexiness, and he wasn't even trying!
"You know Lane here is twenty years old, like you Harry, and he's already a well-practiced businessman. Pretty soon, he could be a millionaire! I bet you could learn a thing or two from him." My dad sounded so arrogant right now.
Harry continued to stare at his food. How dare my dad shame him like this....I tightened my lips together to prevent myself from saying something disrespectful to my dad.
"I definitely could teach Harry more than a few things. For one, I could teach him how to comb his hair properly or teach him how to treat a lady respectfully." Lane said as Harry sat up fast in his seat. He leaned forward and pierced Lane with a deathly glare.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Harry gritted. Oh crap.....
"Well you could have at least put some effort into your appearance tonight. And it's no secret you've slept with just about seventy percent of the girls in this town. And you work as a store clerk! How do you expect to take care of Vana with minimum wage?" I tensed. I couldn't believe Lane just said that to Harry in front of my parents, in front of my dad.
"How do you know if he's slept around so much?" I could hear the anger in my dad's tone, which is probably what Lane wanted.
"Everyone knows! He's known as the town player among our age group. Pretty juvenile for a twenty year old. That's the difference between him and I. I am a young man looking out for Vana's well-being. I'm much like my dad, Mr. Helen. Harry here is a boy looking for the latest one night stand. I just thought you should know that he is bound to break Vana's heart just like he has done to countless other women." My mouth dropped open. I couldn't find the words to speak as I was so shocked at Lane's bluntness.
"Who the fu-..I mean who do you think you are? You don't know how I feel about Vana! You don't know shi-..anything! You think I'm juvenile? What's juvenile is the fact that you feel the need to shame another man in front of his beautiful girlfriend and her parents simply because you are jealous you don't have said beautiful girlfriend." I could tell Harry was infuriated but he was trying to remain calm for the sake of my parents. "And I have plenty of money to take care of Vana! I have money from another source that is more than enough to last a life time!" I tensed up, I wasn't sure what that source was, but I began to grow nervous at the possibilities. I knew Harry was involved in a gang or something of that sort, and not everything he did was exactly...legal.
"Oh? And what would that source be?" My dad asked, judgement surrounding his tone.
Harry closed his eyes as he took in a deep breath. He opened his eyes, he went to look my dad straight in the eyes but not before taking a quick glance at my expression. I knew my eyes were wide and I looked worried out of my mind.
"My father was killed in serious work accident. For compensation, I received money, a lot of it. I have most of it in the bank as I intend to use it wisely."
My heart dropped when I heard those words. Why didn't he tell me?
I began to feel guilty as I realized something. That night that I had visited Caleb's grave, Harry told me something, but I never seemed to question him about it. He had been at the gravesite before I even arrived. He said that as he was leaving he saw Caleb's tomb and then he saw me. He must have been visiting his dad's grave. How could I be so selfish and not ask why he was there?
My dad's posture immediately softened. I could tell Harry had won over a little piece of my dad's heart.
"I'm so sorry. Vana never told us." My mom whispered.
"You must know about Caleb. It's not quite the same but Vana has felt similar loss. We all have. My partner down at the police station was murdered two years ago, he was Lane's dad. And my wife, well she lost a dear friend of hers a couple weeks ago. That's why we were out of town, to visit her friend in her last hour." My dad explained.
Harry nodded and looked down at his lap. He looked up at me and tried to give me a reassuring smile, but it was a weak smile so it didn't do much of reassuring.
My parents began to ask Harry more questions about himself, and they weren't being judgmental or rude, something I appreciated. I could tell my dad and Harry were starting to get along. Harry's charm quickly won over my mom, I noticed.
Lane noticed the sudden change in my parents interaction with him. I looked over at him while he thought hard. He didn't look happy, until his eyes flashed with an idea. His smile grew...wickedly big. I gulped down. I knew he was about to say something to break the friendliness that was playing out before us.
"So, Styles, how are all your buddies doing?" Harry immediately froze up, his face turning red.
What was going on? Why did he say Harry's last name like that? Who were these buddies?
My dad instantly froze. His mouth was agape as his eyes burned with fire. "What did you just say?"
"Oh, I was just asking Harry about his friends. I think their names are Niall, Zayn, Liam, and Louis, and...Andrew?" How the hell did Lane know them?
"You're Harry Styles? I thought you looked familiar! How could I forget?!? You lied....we have met before...." My dad stood up abruptly, leaning towards Harry while pointing his finger at him.
Harry paled. His face was emotionless.
"Get the hell out of my house!!!" My dad's voice rang throughout the room. He walked over to Harry and tried to punch him square in the face but Harry quickly blocked it.
My dad kept trying to hit him, finally he managed to shove Harry against the wall. I knew Harry was holding back, he was never going to hit my dad in this situation. He knew I wouldn't be happy if he did. I kept trying to get to break them apart but Lane was holding me back.
I kept crying out my dad's name asking him to stop. My mom looked so confused as she protested for my dad to stop along with me.
My dad whipped his head around to face me as he still held Harry to the wall, "You will never see this man again, Vana! Not as long as you are living under my roof. I FORBID YOU TO EVER SPEAK TO HIM AGAIN!" With that my dad turned his head back to face Harry.
"You stay the HELL AWAY FROM MY DAUGHTER!!! She's too good for you, you. piece. of. shit." His tone was dark as he threw his fist into Harry's stomach. Harry groaned. This was too much for me. He began to throw punch after punch. I began to cry and managed to escape Lane's firm hold. I couldn't bare seeing Harry so vulnerable to my dad's attacks, all for the sake of staying on my good side.
I managed to grab a hold of my dad's forearm, trying to get him to release his hold on Harry.
"Daddy, please don't hurt him." I pleaded softly.
"Have you touched her, Styles? Have you touched my daughter?" I felt my throat get tighter when my dad screamed those words into Harry's red face.
"That's none of your concern." My dad's eyes grew wider. He began to tremble, his anger was out of control.
"How dare you fucking touch her!!!" He punched Harry with the arm that I wasn't holding.
When I wouldn't let go of his other arm after he tried to shake me off, he released Harry in a split second, but then turned swiftly to me. He slapped me right before his hands grabbed my shoulders as he forcefully pushed me away, I flew backwards onto the floor, pain began to surround my back.
But the pain of the experience hurt worse. My dad just hit me.
Harry wasted no time in punchin my dad right in the face before grabbing his shoulders into the wall.
"I don't give a fucking damn if she's your daughter! You have no fucking right to hit her!!!!" Harry was furious, but my dad seemed to realize what he just did. He violated one of the most precious rules a father was to never violate. My dad didn't fight Harry back as shame overtook him. I could hear Lane trying to calm my mother down as she sobbed silently.
I ran up the stairs and Harry was quick to follow me. I could hear my dad try to apologize to my mother but she wouldn't listen to him. She was disappointed in him
I ran around the room frantically grabbing my necessities, clothing, underwear, my laptop, chargers, toothbrush, razor, perfume, all of it.
"Vana, what are you doing?"
I turned around to meet his eyes as tears rolled down my cheek. "I'm moving in with you." His gaze alone made my knees go weak.
"Are you sure? Your father would not wan-"
"I don't care about my father. You saw what he did!"
"Yeah, but-"
"Do you not want me to move in with you?!' My heart began to race, my emotions were a big blur. I had no idea what I was feeling but betrayed and angry was in that mix.
"Of course I want you to move in! I just don't want you to lose your relationship with your father. I know how much you respect-"
"He lost the privilege of my respect when he hit me." I began to sob so Harry finished packing my things.
Everything seemed to calm down downstairs, but the air was still tense as Harry and I headed for the door.
My dad came out into the hall, followed by my mom and Lane. "Where the hell do you think you're going?"
"I'm moving in with Harry. I no longer live under your roof, so now you can't forbid me to talk to him, and now him and we can fuck each other as much as we want!" I only said those words out of anger. My mom gasped as Lane shook his head, but his face showed jealousy. My words only enticed my father's anger. In a matter of seconds, Harry and I were running for the black range rover. We got in and drove off as my dad ran out yelling and screaming frantically.
