Feeling Safe With Danger

It had been about a week since my sleepover at Amelia's house. I had talked with Georgia about her being pregnant and about Harry, but she never said much. She just said she knew Harry and some of his buddies from different clubs they both frequently attended, but she would always try to change the conversation. I thought maybe she was hiding something but what could there be to hide?

I walked out of my room as I listened to the voices conversing downstairs.
"Hmm...those were the good ole days."

"You miss him don't you, sweetie?" My mom asked my dad.

"Yeah, never in my life did I have a partner that was so dedicated to his work. I remember when I first met him at the station and we were assigned on our first case. I had no idea we would be such great friends. We were like brothers. I can't believe Lane moved into our neighborhood? Ha! What are the odds?"

I walked into the kitchen as my parents continued their conversation about Lane and his dad, Harvey. When my parents came home, they wanted to meet Lane. Turn's out Lane is Harvey's son. Harvey was my dad's partner in crime at the police station. They knew each other for fifteen years, until two years ago when Harvey was shot by some unknown man. This man was a part of some gang that was involved with several rapes, armed robberies, and drug deals. Apparently, my dad knew Lane as Harvey brought him to the station a lot. So to see him in the neighborhood, my dad couldn't be happier.

Lane was healing up quickly and had come over for dinner several times. My parents asked him what had happened, but he just told them he had a bad accident. They believed him. It was slightly uncomfortable for me having Lane over so much, but I dealt with it.

"Now, Vana. Lane is the kind of guy you should be dating!" My dad exclaimed. Wow, he actually wanted me to date someone?

"Dad, you know I'm dating Harry."

"When can we meet him?" My dad stiffened.

I sighed, I really didn't want them to meet Harry because I knew my dad would have a hard time approving him. "I don't know..whenever..."

"Invite him over for dinner. Tonight."

"But Lane's coming for dinner tonight..."

"I said invite him. I'm meeting him tonight whether you like it or not." I didn't want to object to my dad so I simply nodded and walked out of the room. I ran to my bedroom and turned on my phone.

"Hey, babe! What's up?"

"My dad wants you to come over for dinner tonight. He wants to meet you."

The line was quiet on the other end.

"Please? He's practically commanding you come over here."

"Okay. I'll do it for you." He sounded scared. Really scared. I thought it was a little weird for him to be so nervous. I mean, yeah, my dad was intimidating but Harry could be quite the gentleman when he put his mind to it. But at the same time, I thought it was cute.

"Harry, one more thing..."

"Yeah?"

"Lane's gonna be here..." I rushed my words and prepared for the worst.

"What?" He gritted.

"Turns out that Lane is the son of my dad's deceased police partner."

After some shouting and repeated cussing, Harry eventually calmed down.

"Fuck that twat. I swear if he tries anything on me or you, I will not hesitate to beat the living shit out of him!"

"Harry! Please! You need to be on your best behavior. It would mean so much to me if you and my dad could get along. I want my dad to like you so please don't mess this up. It's so important that you make a good impression..for me, okay?" I pleaded.

"Fine." He huffed.

"Be over at 6 pm, where something nice, and something that hides your tattoos, okay? My dad hates tattoos." I heard Harry mutter a few curse words before we hung up.




I had a bad feeling about this dinner, a really bad feeling.




The doorbell rang and it was either Harry or Lane. I ran to the mirror to make sure I looked alright.

"Ah, Lane! So good to see you." I heard my dad chime. Ugh, it sickened me how much he liked Lane. I heard them walk towards the kitchen as Lane began complimenting my mom on how good the food smelled.

I was making my way to the kitchen when I heard the door bell ring. I ran over to it, eager to see Harry.
I opened the door and my eyes widened when I saw him in a black button up and black slacks. His hair was pushed back and he looked really hot. I could also tell he was checking me out. I leaned into him and gave him a peck on the lips. He then whispered into my ear, "You look so sexy. It's gonna take everything in me not to take you to your bedroom right now." I playfully slapped his chest as the heat from his breath lingered on me.

"Don't be so dirty." He winked at me after the words left my lips.

Lane and my dad came back out, I guess Lane didn't noticed Harry in the corner because he came to me with a huge grin on his face. "Vana, you look absolutely beautiful. Stunning, as usual." I tensed when he grabbed my hand, placing a delicate kiss to the top of it before his lips made his way to my cheek.
Immediately, Harry walked over and possessively draped on arm over my shoulder and pulled me away from Lane. He stared down Lane.
Lane's eyes widened, his body stiffened when he realized Harry was here.
My eyes drifted behind Lane and I noticed my dad had watched the whole thing.
Harry walked up to my dad, "It's very nice to meet you Mr. Helen. Vana has told me so many good things about you, she really respects you."
My dad shook his hand cautiously. "....Have we met before?" His eyes narrowed on Harry. Lane gave a nervous cough. I noticed Harry seemed to get really uncomfortable, his face paled for a second before he answered.
"No."
"Alright, dinner's ready!" My mom called.


And so began the dinner all hell broke loose.
