Was Blind but Now I See
"I have a surprise for you," Harry said from behind me. He had his large hands covering my eyes so all I could see was blackness. I gripped his wrists tight as he guided me to wherever the hell we are going.
"Are we there yet?" I giggled.
His hand suddenly left my face, and he was now wrapping his arms around me. "You can look now."
I opened my eyes to see we were in a room, but not just any ordinary room. It looked like we were in the middle of the ocean. Crazy, right? Let me explain. Each wall in this room is clear glass, including the ceiling. Behind every wall was the ocean water, flowing with hundreds of different fish.
I looked up at the ceiling, with my head resting on Harry's chest, to see a gigantic figure swimming over it. "Is that a whale?" I pointed to it as my mouth made an 'o' shape.
"Indeed it is," Harry chuckled into my ear.
"Harry, this is incredible," I gasped. I was in awe of all the beautiful fish in the sea. The ground outside of the glass was covered in shiny sand, shimmering from the teal water's reflection. Parts of the sand were covered in many types and colors of coral, as well as kelp and seaweed. I watched as dolphins came into my vision's reach and rode the waves. Not even a second later, I saw a pufferfish swimming alongside some tortoises. I giggled at the funny looking fish before setting my eyes on a family of stingrays. This isn't like anything I've ever seen.
Inside the glass? The flooring was glass as well and all you could see was sand underneath it. There wasn't anything else but us in here, not even a door. Come to think of it, how did we even get in here?
"You'll think this is amazing too," Harry unwrapped his arms from me. I turned to see him pulling a remote out of his blue skinny jeans.
Are skinny jeans all he wears? Wow, I get distracted easily.
Harry faced the remote towards the glass and clicked a big red button that sat on it.
Why are buttons always red? Doesn't it seem that way? Why can't they be orange? Or yellow? Wait, I'm getting distracted again.
Suddenly, the ocean behind the glass changed to a dark field. And when I say dark, it's because it's nighttime. "What? Where'd it go?" I stared wide-eyed at the glass.
Suddenly, trees that were in the distance began to glow yellow. But wait, is the yellow moving? They're fireflies! I stared in awe, yet again, as thousands of fireflies began flying towards and around the the glass. They fly so gracefully, it's beautiful.
"The ocean seemed so real. I didn't realize all of this is just some sort of illusion," I said still gazing at the glowing bugs.
"It is real," Harry looked confused. He took me by surprise when he walked over to the glass and pressed his hand against it, pushing it down. I threw myself to the floor and covered my head, afraid the ceiling would come crashing down on me any second. Harry chuckled and tilted my face up towards the sky, "Look."
I opened my eyes that I apparently had squeezed shut when I flew to the floor. There it was. The ceiling was being carried carefully by the fireflies. They hovered over to the grass a few feet away and gently placed the glass down. Wow. This really is spectacular.
"This is really real?"
"As real as it gets," Harry helped me to my feet. Just then, fireflies began landing into my arms. They tickled my skin as they walked up and down my arm. Before I knew it, Harry attacked me with a kiss on the lips. The fireflies began flying off of my arms with lightening speed, creating wind that blew my hair up. I kissed him back as I gripped his curls and closed my eyes.
Harry broke away from the kiss, "What's that?" I opened my eyes and saw him looking over my shoulder with a confused expression. I turned to see what he was looking at, finding the fireflies flying around in the shape of a tornado. What the heck?
I did what every person does in horror movies and walked towards the figure. As I got closer, a few of the fireflies flew away from the front of the tornado. That's when I saw the kid. I recognize that beautiful face anywhere.
Harry's POV:
I've been watching Lexington sleep for a while now. I had woken up to find her laying on her back and me on my side with my arm still wrapped around her. She looks kind of goofy since the frosting I put on her face last night was now smeared and dried to her face. I wiped the frosting off of my face and licked my fingers clean of it before we went to bed, I'm not sure how she forgot about her's.
Lex's mom had come in and told me to wake her up, but I just couldn't interrupt her sleep. She looks so peaceful and happy. Plus, she's been talking in her sleep, saying words like 'incredible' and 'well' (or maybe she said whale, I haven't decided). I better wake her up though, before Mrs. Reed gets mad at me. Hm, how shall I wake her? Oh I know.
I leaned my body closer to her and planted a kiss on her neck, slowly trailing more kisses to her ear, and finished by nibbling her ear. I thought that'd do the trick but no. The girl moaned before turning herself away from me. Well okay then, she just had to play it that way. I noticed she had a firm grip on her bed sheets which have me a bright idea. I slid out of the bed and grabbed the bed sheets from my side. Then, I jerked the sheets off the bed, pulling Lex to the floor.
"Ow Harry," she said sleepily, yet she just lay on the floor.
"Harry did you-?" Jenny walked in. She stopped talking because she saw me in only my boxers. Uh, what do I even do in this situation? She quickly covered her eyes, "Did you wake her up?"
"MOM! GET OUT!" Lexington jumped in front of me to shield me. Um, okay. This is awkward.
"I'll take that as a yes," her mom laughed. "Do you need me to wash your shirt for you Harry? I saw that you got something on it last night."
"Yes please," I said.
"Okay, Lexington, hand me his shirt and I'll be on my way."
Lexington did as she was told and shut her bedroom floor quickly afterwards. She gave me a glare and crossed her arms. Oh boy am I in for it.
"You couldn't cover yourself?" she growled.
"With what? You were hogging the blankets," I saved myself, well I thought I did until I heard her huff. "What was I supposed to do?"
"Put the nearest piece of clothing on," she grabbed my pants from the floor and tossed them to me.
My pants weren't even close to me. I picked up the tank top she wore yesterday, which happened to be by my feet. I held it up in front of me, "This was the nearest piece of clothing. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't fit me." Seriously. She's so skinny and short that this shirt almost looked like a wash cloth next to me.
"Oh hush," she smiled before yanking the shirt out of my hand.
I slid my pants on, "I wouldn't mind if you made me one of those though."
"The shirt?"
"No, my pants," I said sarcastically to which she glared at me for. "Yes the shirt, you Goof," I laughed.
"That can be arranged," she smiled. She walked around her room, pulling clothes out of her closet and dresser. "I'll be out in a sec, I'm just changing."
"Oh, Lex."
She faced me and curled her lips, "Yeah?"
"You've got a little some thing on your face," I circled my finger in front of my own face.
"The frosting?"
"Yup."
She walked over to me, "Why don't you take care of that?"
"Ew no, it's crusty and it's been all over you face," I joked, taking a step back from her. "That's nasty."
She pushed me gently and laughed, "Says the guy who literally licked my face two months ago."
"You remember that?"
"I really only remember us being in here. I think the pills were wearing off by then."
"Makes sense. You were being your usual strangeness," I poked her ribs.
She slapped my hand and yelled, "Hey!"
"Don't worry, I like strange." I teased her by brushing my lips against her's, and pulling away before she could kiss me. "Go wash your face."
"Jerk," she muttered before walking into the bathroom.
Once she was dressed, she went downstairs to retrieve my shirt for me. She probably doesn't trust me with her mom now. What was I supposed to do? It was just an awkward experience for all of us. After she got me my shirt, she had me come downstairs and help her pack up the cupcakes into large containers. I helped her load them in the car and then helped her mom load a few shopping bags in the car. Both Lex and her mom were being real secretive about the bags, so I figured I probably shouldn't ask about them. Then we all got in the car and were on our way to meet the judges.
"So no school?" I asked Lexington.
"Nope, I'm ditching today. Are we close, Mom?" Lex has been acting really anxious the whole car ride. She keeps bouncing her leg up and down and tapping her fingers on the window. Her mom must've snapped at her twenty times for putting fingerprints on the window.
Her mom sighed, "Yes Lexington."
"Okay," she said turning to me. "I hate to do this to you, Buddy, but you can't know where we're going."
"Do what?"
She tugged the headband I was wearing until it covered my eyes. "Can you see?"
"No." It was true. My headband was thick, so it wasn't even slightly see-through. On top of that, it was wide enough to blind my whole sight.
"Okay, I believe you." She probably didn't. She must've tested it out by waving her hands in my face or something.
"Why can't I know where we're going?"
"Because if you did, that'd take the only fun part of it," I heard Jenny join the conversation. Only fun part? What's going on with these two? I stayed quiet the rest of the car ride while millions of different scenarios playing in my head.
"We're here," Lex's voice said. "I'll help guide you to the room. Just wait here." I nodded at her, but I don't know if she saw me since I'm blind. I heard her car door shut and not to long after, mine open.
"Aw Sweetie, I wish you didn't blindfold him. Now he can't help carry things," her mom said. Is she the one who just opened my door? This is killing me.
"Sure he can," Lex replied. I felt someone grab my hand and gently tug me. "It's kind of a long drop, be careful," Lex whispered. Okay, so it was her who opened my door.
"How is he going to carry anything if he can't see?"
My feet touched the ground and I heard the door shut behind me. Lex began pushing me to who knows where.
"Just put the bags on his arms. Harry, hold your arms out," Lex commanded. I did what I was told and held my arms out. I felt the loops of the bag handles being placed around my arms.
"Am I supposed to just walk like a zombie?" I laughed.
"Yes," Lex replied cheekily. She's definitely serious. "You'll be fine."
"Poor boy," Jenny said. "He can't seem to catch a break from you."
I heard Lex sigh, "Mother, he enjoys these games just as much as I do."
"Thanks for speaking on my behalf," I smirked.
A hand grabbed one of my arms and began pulling me. "No problem," said Lex.
A few minutes of walking passed by and we were now standing...somewhere. I'm not useful when I'm blind, sorry.
"Is that him?" a deep voice said.
"Yup, this is Harry. Harry this is my dad. Oh wait, you can't see him. Sorry," I heard her giggle slightly. She thinks she's so funny sometimes.
"Pleasure to meet you Sir," I smiled. "I would shake your hand but your daughter placed these on my arms." I held my arms up higher, showing off the dangling bags.
"Here, I'll take them," her father chuckled and removed the bags from my arms. "Let me take them in real fast and I'll help you record." I listened as his heavy footsteps trailed off.
I put my arms down in relief, they were starting to hurt. Someone grabbed onto one of my arms and leaned against it. I felt them starting to rock back and forth.
"Are you nervous?" I asked whoever was holding me. I was trying to figure out who was gripped to me by having them speak.
"You have no idea," Lex sighed. Thank God it's her. Geez, this whole being blind thing is hard.
"Well don't be," I felt around for her arms and rubbed them. "You're making me nervous."
The heavy footsteps walked back over to us. "Alright, hand me your camera."
Lex let go of my arm to do as her father said.
"Hello guys, we're here to meet our mystery judges," Lex said.
"Are you talking to the camera?" I already knew the answer, but I wanted to feel included.
"Yes Harry," she replied in a cynical tone.
I turned to the opposite direction of where her voice was to act as if I didn't know where she was standing. "Well, I wouldn't know since I can't see a thing," I leaned over as if I were towering over her. I felt her hands turn me to face either her or the camera...one of those. "Oh," I chuckled.
"That you are," she patted my arm. "Anyways, not only are we surprising the kids, but we're surprising Harry as well."
"Kids?" That's definitely not what I expected at all. Actually, I honestly didn't know what to expect.
"Yes Harry, kids. Come on." She pushed me a little ways before pushing my headband back into my hair. Ah, I can see, that is when my eyes adjust to the lights.
Once my eyes adjusted, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. These weren't just any kids, these were cancer patients. We were in a St. Jude's Children Hospital, inside their playroom. Only about eight kids were scattered around the room with their parents by their sides. Each kid had little or no hair on their heads. I can't believe this.
I looked down at Lex, "Wow I-I don't know what to say."
"Welcome to my second home for the last month," Lex said with a half-smile. Huh? Then she smiled to the camera, "Time for all the little ones to judge. I have to warn you though Harry, I know all these kids." She nudged my in the ribs with her elbow a couple of times before grabbing a container of cupcakes from her mom. "Take your's from my mom." She's very bossy, isn't she?
"Demanding," I smirked before doing what I was told.
"Harry!" a little girl gasped before covering her mouth.
Lex laughed, "Harry meet your biggest fan, Madison." We walked over to Madison and sat in the little chairs beside her. I probably look like a giant in this room, especially in this chair since my knees could touch my chest.
"Hi Madison," I shook her tiny hand. This girl had to be about four years old. She's very pretty, especially her tiny but bright smile which stood out the most to me.
"And this is her mom, Raina," Lex put her had on the woman's shoulder.
"Nice to meet you too Ma'am," I smiled at her.
"Are you excited?" Raina asked her daughter who just jumped up and down with a smile on her face. Something tells me that Lexington, or maybe even her mom, had already told these families we were coming.
Is it rude to ask how long she's been in here? Or what her story is?
"Why don't you tell us a little about Madison," Lex nodded to Madison's mom. Okay, thankfully I don't have to ask.
"Well, Madison was diagnosed with stomach cancer about a year ago. The doctor says she might've had it for a lot longer, but she's a fighter and she's gonna get better. Right Baby?" she smiled at Madison. Madison just nodded at her. This mad me sad. The poor girl has only been alive for so long, and she's already having to fight to save it.
"I know she'll be okay," Lex tickled the girl. "Alright, so Madison, would you like to help Harry and I out? We have a bunch of cupcakes we need to get rid of. Would you take some?" Madison nodded her head.
I placed my container on the table and opened it for the girl, "Pick out your favorite one." She put her tiny finger to her lips as she scanned the cupcakes. She finally grabbed the Lexington one. "Ooh, you picked out my favorite one too."
Lex placed her container on the table as well. "Will you take one of mine too? You can pick one out for your mommy."
"Okay," Madison nodded.
"Alright, choose the best one," Lex opened the container for the girl.
The girl repeated the same process before pulling out Lex's rainbow cupcake.
"Which one do you think is prettier?" I asked her while pointing back and forth at the cupcakes. Madison thought about it for a second and then just shrugged.
Lex laughed, "I'll take that as a tie. Well thank you for your help Madison." I watched as Lexington have her a big hug.
"Can you take a picture with her?" her mom asked me.
"Of course I can," I smiled. I placed the girl in my lap and smiled for the camera. "Would you like an autograph too?"
The girl nodded her head excitedly. The table we were at had coloring paper and markers, so I grabbed a picture of a pony and signed the bottom of it.
"Now you have to color this picture with me. Is that okay?" I asked the girl. She smiled before handing me a marker to help her. I spent a few minutes coloring with her before moving to the next kid with Lexington.
"Hey Trevor," Lexington sat on the floor next to a boy with grey eyes. I don't think I've ever seen eyes like that before.
I sat down on the other side of the boy and placed my cupcakes onto the floor. The boy looked up at me for a quick second before doing a double-take.
"Hello, I'm Harry. Nice to meet you, Trevor." He just gave me a big smile. "I really like that shirt," I pointed to his superman shirt. The boy looked down at his shirt and only smiled at me again.
"He knows who you are," a man smiled at me. I assume that's his father. "Trevor has throat cancer."
"It's hard sometimes," the woman beside him said with tears in her eyes, obviously Trevor's mother. "He can barely eat, swallow or talk. He wakes up crying at night from all the pain. I just wish he'll get better."
"I can already see that he's a fighter, like superman," I pointed to his shirt again. "Can you do that? Fight like superman?"
He gave me a funny look and shook his head no.
"Sure you can. You've just got to use this," Lex pointed to Trevor's head. "Your imagination can do some pretty crazy things."
Trevor nodded to her and smiled.
"Can I ask you something Trevor?" He nodded his head to me. "Will you pick out some cupcakes for your parents? They look pretty hungry." He nodded his head again.
Lex opened her container, "You can pick one from here and one from Harry's."
The boy made some excellent choices. The cupcake he chose from Lex's is one where she made a puppy from icing. The cupcake he chose from mine was the Green Bay Packers logo which I had made from icing as well. He happily handed his dad the football one and his mom the puppy one.
"One more question," I told the boy. "Which one looks better?"
He put his fingers to his chin as he thought about it. Then he pointed to Lexington's cupcake. I would've disagreed, but her cupcake decorating skills were definitely better than mine. My Packers logo looked as if I just threw the icing around the perfect G I topped with white sprinkles. So I get shaky hands after decorating for an hour, sue me. And I was doing so well.
"Thank you so much Trevor. You've been a lot of help," Lexington smiled. "You can have a cupcake for yourself if you want." He just shook his heard no. Poor kid's throat hurts so much that he won't even eat a cupcake. A cupcake.
I wound up taking a picture of Trevor and I for my Instagram, with his parents' permission as well. They took a couple pictures of him and me tool. I played with him and his action figures for a bit afterwards.
We went through the same process with the other six children. Each kid had a different sad story. Lexington wound up beating me at the competition, no surprise to me. She really did an amazing job. We gathered together with all of the kids and took a group photo, before having them say goodbye to the camera. We made sure to mention people need to donate to this foundation. I'm definitely donating after what I've seen today.
We were there for another hour, playing with the kids. It turns out the bags Mrs. Reed brought were gifts for the kids. She bought Madison a One Direction Barbie doll of me and Trevor a superman cape. She bought all of the kids stuff related to their favorites. Their faces were so cute, lighting up with priceless smiles.
After a while, I noticed Lex's parents have left the room. And where's Gail? Is she at school?
"I think it's time that I show you something," Lexington grabbed the last cupcake she had. It was the 'Rocky Mountain' cupcake she made. I wouldn't dare make a joke about it now. She used her free hand to tangle her fingers with mine and guide me out of the room. We walked to an elevator, she pressed a button and waited for it.
"I was upset yesterday because you wanted to go pick up my sister from school. But she wasn't at school. I lied," Lex stated. She couldn't even look at me.
The elevator made a 'ding' noise and we went in. We rode the elevator in silence all the way to the third floor. I didn't know what to say to her. I don't care that she lied or anything, but I'm afraid anything I say will upset her. I'd prefer to keep my mouth shut. Once we reached the floor, we stepped out of the elevator and made our way down the hall.
"Gail wasn't at school and my mom wasn't at work. They were here," she sighed. We stopped in front of a room. "We've been here almost every day for the past month. It's been nothing but stressful and overwhelming and I-"
I interrupted her by pulling her in for a hug. "Shh, it'll be okay."
"But it won't," Lex sniffled as she hugged me tighter.
"Don't say that."
We stood there for a good five minutes. I didn't want her to walk in like she's been crying, so I was allowing her to cool down a bit.
"Okay, let's go," Lex nodded. Then she guided me into the room.
"Harry!" Gail yelled, but she wasn't the one sitting in the hospital bed. I knelt down to meet the girl's hug and held her on my hip. I looked at the bed to see a little boy who had to be the same age as Gail. The boy looked pail and exhausted, with no hairs left on his head.
"Harry, meet Thomas. Thomas is my cousin," Lex's voice cracked.
"Tommy is my best friend!" Gail's voice made my ears ring. This only made Lex sniffle more.
"Hey Thomas," I waved to him, and gave me a weak smile.
"I made you a cupcake, just the way you like it," Lex walked over to the boys side and showed him the sweet.
A hand was placed on my shoulder. I turned to see the source was Jenny who was smiling at me and fighting back her tears. Gail began wiggling out of my grip so I put her down so she could go hang out with her sister and cousin.
"Thomas has always wanted to go hiking," Jenny said to me. "So Lexington has a thing for making him these cupcakes."
"That's amazing," I smiled, but it quickly faded. "Do you mind me asking, what he has?"
"No," she smiled, but a tear fell from her eye. "We've known for about two years that he's had liver cancer. He had a hepatectomy, where they removed the part of the liver the tumor was on. But it spread. He's had so many surgeries, Harry." She whispered with a sniffle, "He's my sister's only son and she could lose him any day."
This made me start crying. I can't believe this is happening to this family. I can't imagine what they're going through. I can't imagine being in any of these family's positions. I feel terrible and useless, wishing there was something I could do. All I can really do is pray for them, and I don't even pray.
"We'll do it all, everything, on our own," Lexington's angelic voice sung to Thomas. "We don't need, anything, or anyone."
"It's his favorite song," Jenny whispered in my ear. Now I was crying. I get why singing is touchy for her. I wish I wasn't such an ass to her all the time.
"If I lay here, if I just lay here. Would you lie with me and just forget the world?" she continued singing. "I don't quite know, how to say, how I feel. Those three words, are said too much, they're not enough. If I lay here, if I just lay here. Would you lie with me and just forget the world?"
That's when the boy drifted to sleep. Lex tilted her head to face mine, tears were streaming down her face. I walked over to her and held her as close as possible to me. I listened to her cry and sniffle into my chest. I just wish I could make it all better.
