Chapter 30: Teardrops of Love

Leila's P.O.V.

“Good morning, love,” I hear a voice whispering in my ear. I slowly open my eyes to see Niall standing above me already dressed and cleansed.

“Morning,” I reply, sitting up and yawning. “What smells so good?”

“I made breakfast,” he responds. “With Madison, of course.”

“What time is it?” I ask.

“About 10:45,” Niall says, sitting on the edge of my bed.

“I should probably get up now, shouldn’t I,” I rhetorically deliver.

“If you want good hot food, I would suggest that. I made your favorite,” he answers, smiling.

“You’re amazing,” I reply.

“I know,” he cheekily responds. “Now come on, I’m starving!”

Sighing, I roll out of bed and follow him into the kitchen, which seems to be very much alive this morning. Plates are piled with my favorite breakfast food, including chocolate chip waffles and coffee cake.

“You guys did all of this?” I ask amazed, staring at Niall and Madison settling themselves by the table.

“Hey, it was his idea,” Madison interjects, pointing at Niall, who seems to be getting a bit red in the face.

“Aw, I love you,” I reply, sitting and digging in. He smiles at me and continues eating his food.

“So what are we doing today?” Madison questions. I have an idea but I’m not sure how they will take it, since Niall just got here yesterday. I look at him and he nods, knowing what I’m thinking.

“I was thinking about going to the hospital again with Niall this time,” I slowly suggest. Madison glances at me, then at Niall, and then back to me.

“Are you sure?” she asks.

“Yeah,” Niall replies.

“Okay, we can do that,” Madison agrees, focusing back on her food.

We finish breakfast quickly and I get ready to go the hospital, showering and cleaning up. Once we’re all set, we head out to Madison’s car and drive off. As usual, I plug in my iPod to the sound system and turn on some upbeat music to make the mood happy and not depressing, as it will be after we’re done at the hospital.

“So, how was Greg’s wedding?” I ask Niall sitting in the back seat.

“Awesome, everyone was having a great time,” he replies, smiling.

“You were best man, right?” I question.

“Yeah. That was pretty cool,” Niall responds, nodding.

I keep our conversation going until we reach the hospital, trying to maintain his good mood. As we pull into the parking lot, I can tell that Niall’s nervous. He knows that Max is in a coma and we don’t even know if he’s woken up yet. Now I’m getting uneasy with that thought.

We enter in the building and approach the woman at the front desk. It’s a different woman this time and she doesn’t look stressed at all whereas the other one did.

“How may I help you?” she addresses us, glancing at us through pointy glasses.

“We’re here to visit Alexa Johnson and Max Fowler,” I recite. The woman takes out 2 folders and looks through them.

“Alexa Johnson has been released yesterday afternoon with a fractured foot and wrist. Max, however, is in a coma on the fourth floor, room 436. Ask the doctor first if it’s okay to visit him. I’m not sure on the specifics of him,” she responds with no emotion.

“Okay, thanks,” I reply, turning around to Madison and Niall. “Alexa’s released, so we can’t see her, but we can see Max on the fourth floor, hopefully.”

Madison and Niall nod at me and we take the elevator up to the fourth floor, stopping at the desk to make sure it’s safe for us. The nurse, unfortunately, has bad news for us.

“He still hasn’t woken up, but I can see if we can sneak you in somehow. The doctors are doing everything they can to try and wake him up, but these things can’t be fixed on medications,” the nurse says. I glimpse at Niall and his expression drops to shock.

“He’s not awake?!” Niall exclaims, his eyes widening. I move over to him and wrap my hand around his, squeezing it gently.

“He’s going to be okay,” I whisper to him as the nurse leads us to Max’s room. We’re forced to wait outside the room while the nurse finds the doctor. The window in between the room and the hallway is open, meaning anyone can see in Max’s room and vice versa. Niall peers into the room and my heart grieves for him. I’ve never seen Niall this mournful before. His eyes, which are usually bright and cheerful, are now a cloudy gray-blue, filling with water. His face is dreary and miserable, definitely not like it always is. His breaths are short and I can feel his heart pounding faster and faster.

“Niall?” I voice.

“Hmm?” he responds, tearing his eyes away from the sight. But before I can answer, the nurse approaches us.

“I’m afraid the doctor has denied your request to visit him. Because he’s unresponsive, the doctor has ordered no visitation unless you’re immediate family. I’m sorry,” the nurse announces, and walks away back to the desk.

“Oh, no,” I start, looking at Niall. Right then, the tears fall down his reddened cheeks, his eyes staring at Max’s unmoving body.

“H-how long has he…” Niall begins.

“Since the accident 2 days ago,” Madison replies. Niall closes his eyes as the droplets continue racing to the ground. I wrap my arms around him and pull him into a tight hug, feeling his arms closing around me, too. We stand like this for a while until he calms down, and without another word, the 3 of us exit the hospital.

We pile into Madison’s car and she slowly drives back to our apartment. The car ride is silent, not even the radio or my iPod playing in the background; just the sound of the city that never sleeps.

An hour later, we reach the building and solemly get out of the car. Still not saying a word, we head upstairs and into our apartment, settling down on the couches immediately.

Niall’s P.O.V.

After a few minutes of complete quiet, Leila speaks first, her voice sounding a lot louder than usual because we’ve gotten used to silence.

“Niall, how are you feeling?” she asks gently. I take a deep breath before responding.

“Horrible. Depressed. Sad. Like I want to shut myself away from this world.”

Leila moves from her spot on the opposite couch to my couch, snuggling up next to me. I put my arm around her and just the feeling of someone there is enough to calm my aching heart.

“Max and I have known each other since I started coming to the studio when I was 10,” I begin, not knowing where this story will take me. “We were best friends, still are, and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. We clicked together very well and he was always there for me, just like I was for him whenever I was around. Through all of that bullshit Spencer gave me, he helped me get my mind off of her and focus on having fun in LA. Without him, I don’t think I would have come to LA as much as I did. I was always so excited to see him again, and as we grew up, I realized how talented and successful he’s become, and I was always his number 1 fan.”

I chuckled a little at the last line. It was true, though.

“I helped push him into auditioning for new things, even if he didn’t necessarily have a chance in it or he wasn’t sure if he wanted to go for it. Since I did that for him, he did that for me and gave me the push to audition for The X-Factor. I owe my success to him because without him encouraging me to go for my dreams, I wouldn’t have done it. We’re the biggest supporters of each other, and he just hit rock bottom.”

My voice quivers a little bit and I fight back the tears, holding on to Leila even tighter.

“I just don’t know what I’m going to do without my best lad. I mean, I know he’s not going to, you know, but Leila, you told me that the doctor said that most people don’t come out of comas the same. I’m scared. I’m really scared. What’s going to happen to him?”

Slowly, a tear escapes from the corner of my eye and I shut them both, trying not to think of the negatives but the thoughts swim through my brain. I feel Leila’s arms clutch on to me and I open my eyes again, focusing on the fact that she’s going through this, too. I look down at her and she’s crying, too, and I hear a sob coming from Madison, also. Oh man, I made both girls cry. This is not what I wanted to happen.

It seems as if Leila just read my mind. She wipes away her tears, grabs the remote, turns on the TV, and finds a funny movie for us to watch. As she snuggles back into my arms, she turns to face me and gently dries my eyes, too. I glance at Madison and she smiles at me, cuddling underneath a blanket.

“Madison, come here,” I quietly speak, motioning for her to join us. I feel bad that she’s sitting there by herself. She agrees and pads over to us, sitting on the opposite side of Leila. She throws the blanket over the three of us and we nestle together, creating warmth and love. This is just what we need for a night like this.

@leikelamichelle

Sounds good to me - other fanfic ideas are just as good as sequels! I'm certainly not trying to pressure you into writing a sequel, I was just curious as to whether you, at this point in time, planned on it :).

I do look forward to your new Niall (or Ashton or otherwise) story ideas ^_^
