The Past
Chapter 2- Exhaustion
I was exhausted.
“Can we go home?” I asked Harry as I watched him swipe the credit card.
“Yeah” He smiled at me sympathetically. “I am just going to run in and get some milk from the supermarket. Do you want to go to the car so you can rest your feet?” He asked.
I took the keys from his pocket and exited a shop without replying. He just laughed at my childish behaviour.
When I got outside the rain was now very heavy and it was difficult to see further then a couple metres any side of me. I didn’t want to run because I knew my leather soled shoes were not the sturdiest. I quickened my pace into a fast walk. As I entered the pedestrian crossing I saw headlights startlingly close. I turned, shocked as I hadn’t seen them before. As I turned to move out of the way my feet slipped from under me and I fell towards the ground. Suddenly my surroundings became vague and all I felt was an unbearable sharp rip stab into my abdomen. My eyes rolled back in my head at the pain, than everything went black.
I rolled back into consciousness multiple times for short snippets. The first time, I felt the rain soak further into my clothes as a man called for help. Then I saw blinding lights as I looked up and saw a number of doctors screaming things like;
“Pregnant teen, had a fall, both mother and child injured. Emergency C-section required”
Baby- injured?! But before I could process their comments, I had fallen back out of consciousness. I woke to a squeeze of my hand as I saw Harry frantically looking in another direction. I was in a surgery room, with a sheet between me and my stomach. I heard the ripping of skin and saw doctors hysterically running around the room with metal surgical tools.
“Blood sugar is now 140/90. The baby needs to come out. Now!” I heard a voice say.
“Is she going to be okay? Is the baby okay?” Harry searched over the blanket and then looked back at me, but I couldn’t stay conscious enough for him to see my eyes open.
I woke once again, after what felt like only moments, my energy slightly regained, and a throbbing feeling in my abdomen. I looked down to see my stomach dramatically reduced in size. I was no longer in a surgical room, but rather in a hospital room that was nicely decorated with flowers and cards. I was 7 months pregnant, but I no longer felt a baby inside me. This wasn’t possible. I wasn’t ready. I looked over at Harry who was looking out the window.
“Harry?” My voice was but a croaky whisper.
He looked at me. His eyes were blood shot and tired and his cheeks were red-stained from tears.
I looked over to the empty hospital cot.
“Harry, where’s my baby?” I cried frantically.
