The Past
Chapter 30- A Long Time Coming
As I walked around the supermarket, I couldn’t help but notice the presumptuous glares I was receiving from multiple fellow shoppers. It wasn’t until the glares began to move to my torso that I realised I hadn’t attempted to cover my baby bump which was now quite evident. Obviously teen pregnancy was still taboo in my town. I walked into the bakery, to pick up some bread for lunch, when I saw a familiar face standing behind the counter. Her brown hair swept over her face as she spoke with another customer. I turned away, ready to exit the building, in awe of meeting her gaze.
“Lucy?” I heard her voice say.
I turned around as if surprised by the voice.
“Tabby!” I said. “Wow, it’s good to see you!” I tried to make my smile genuine.
“Oh my goodness Lucy, I missed you so much! I haven’t seen you in months!” She gushed.
I just smiled. I was still hurt. Her eyes moved from my face to my stomach. Her mouth suddenly formed an O shape.
“Is that...?”
I cut her off. “Yeah.” I tried to hide my embarrassment with a laugh. I felt my cheeks go rosy red.
“Whose...?”
I knew what she was implying by her half asked question.
“Harry’s” I replied lethargically as I let out a sigh- talk about awkward.
“He’s back in town?”
I nodded.
“Look, it was nice seeing you Tabby, but I have to get going.” I said as I turned around.
“Wait.” Tabby called. “Can we please meet up for a coffee. I would really love to catch up.”
“Tabby...” I started.
“Please...” she retorted, sounding desperate. “I really need to see you.”
I gave in. We organised for coffee tomorrow, before I returned to give Harry lunch.
To my relief Harry was still perched on the couch flicking through channels when I walked in. I smiled before heading to the kitchen and putting together his lunch.
“Guess who I saw” I called out midst preparing his food, attempting to sound casual.
“Who?” he said, only half paying attention.
“Tabby...” I heard the TV go silent.
“Oh yeah... How was that?” he turned to face me.
“We are having lunch tomorrow!” I said laughing at myself.
“That’s good..” He almost questioned himself.
“Yeah... I guess so.” I sighed.
Maybe it was time to forgive and forget. After all I missed having a best friend to share everything with. The secrets I had to keep over these last few months had been a burden on my mind.
