The Past
Chapter 29- I Forgot To Mention It
“Don’t cry” she comforted me. “Harry’s is okay for now. He is still connected to life support machines, but there is a good chance he will make it through. The machines have been turned on for extra support on his recovering body.”
I looked up at her in shock. Had I heard it right?
“It was a miracle but he pulled through the surgery. As long as no other post-op complications occur, he should be okay. You are right to see him now if you would like.”
I stood up, eager to see Harry but she yanked at my hand.
“Lucy, I am warning you now, it’s not a pretty sight in there.”
I smiled warmly at her before turning around and entering Harry’s room. It terrified me. He was connected to tube after tube, with one taped over his open mouth. A thick bandage was wrapped around his head. The machines surrounding him were beeping. I sat down on a chair next to Harry and held his hand.
“I am sorry Harry. You don’t deserve this. None of us do.” I whispered. I rested my head on his bed before falling asleep with him.
I woke in the morning to the sun hitting my face. My neck was stiff and my back cracked as I sat up. I looked over at Harry who was still silently sleeping. I needed a shower and a change of clothes. Maybe I could quickly rush home and change into something. I would only be gone a half hour. I stood up and turned for the door.
“Lucy?” A faint voice called to me.
I turned quickly at the sound of his voice.
“Where am I?” He looked around at all the cords connecting to his body.
“You’re safe now, Harry.” I turned back to hold his hand.
“Why am I alive?”
“You didn’t think I would let you leave me that easily? Leave us?” I rubbed my growing stomach, not wanting to question his motives in his fragile state.
“I’m sorry.” He said to me. “I wasn’t thinking straight.”
I kissed his head and hushed him. “Everything is going to be alright, don’t worry about that.”
It had been two weeks and Harry was finally somewhat recovered. I heard a knock at the hospital room door as we were packing up Harry’s stuff. I looked over to see mum holding two coffee’s. She forced a smile at Harry before putting her arms around me and pulling me in for a tight hug. I knew she wasn’t here to see Him, but for me. Mum moved away gasping almost as soon as she hugged me. I looked at her, a questioning look plastered on my face. Her eyes just flicked from me to my stomach. Oh shit. I may have forgotten to mention my pregnancy to mum.
“Why is there a giant budge from your stomach? Please tell me you have just gained a couple of pounds. Please Lucy.”
Mum had, given birth to me when she was a teen, so she was really anal about me not following in her footsteps.
“Sorry mum. I was trying to find the right time to tell you.” I knew there was never going to be a ‘right’ time to reveal this.
“I don’t know what I am more disappointed about. The fact that your pregnant or the fact that you didn’t tell me and you’re now...what?... like 4 months pregnant. That bump is not small! And I didn’t even know you were sexually active with this kid! Lucy you’re 18!” She said pointing a finger at Harry.
Well that was hypocritical. She had no right to say those things. “Exactly I am 18! And FYI, you had me at 17, so I don’t think you are in a place to tell me that 18 is too young, because it isn’t. There are bloody 12 year olds sleeping around. I have been seeing Harry for like 6 months, you would have to have expected us to have sex for crying out loud...you’re not stupid. Anyway mum, the difference here is, I actually want my kid; you didn’t. Just ‘cause you fucked up my upbringing, doesn’t mean I will do the same with my baby.” I yelled.
“Oh my god!” She gasped. “I have to go.” She said before turning around and dropping her coffee in the bin.
Okay, maybe I took it a little too far with the last line.
“A little awkward” Harry said from the corner. “I mean I could tell she didn’t like me before... but I think the pregnancy just made that 10x worse” Harry said as he picked up his bags.
“She’s just being protective.” I sighed.
I was glad to be free of those beeping machines as we pulled up outside Harry’s house.
Haz had suggested I moved in with him which was logical with the baby and all. This was actually really convenient because mum was still pissed and had jetted off to the US. She would come around eventually...I hoped.
I helped Harry out of the car and up to his house. I sat him down on the couch, turned on some trashy TV show before heading to the kitchen to make lunch. I searched the pantries. Harry seemed to lack any nutritional foods.
“I’m going to go get us some lunch from the shops.” I yelled, before grabbing my keys and heading for the door.
Before I left I turned to Harry. “Are you going to be okay?”
“I promise” He reassured me before I turned and exited his house.
