The Past

Chapter 28- The Nightmare

I ran away from the door, preparing for a run up. One...two...three. I rammed my shoulder into the door at full speed. Still no budge. I tried once more with all my force and the door flew open revealing Harry’s lifeless body on the cold ground. I rushed over to him, checking for his pulse. Nothing.

This wasn’t happening. No, it couldn’t be. He had really done it. I thought my pregnancy would be enough for him to stay, but he had really done it. “NOOOO” I screamed frantically at Harry’s body as I fell to my knees beside him. The tears were streaming down my face. I grabbed my cell phone and dialled 999.

“What is your emergency?” The operator answered.

“My boyfriend. I can’t find his pulse. I need help!” I gushed.

“Alright ma’am. I need you to stay calm. What is your address? We will send help straight away.”

I quickly told to receiver before hanging up and turning my attention back to Harry.

CPR I thought, desperately.

“Harry! Don’t you dare die on me. Don’t you dare give up. You aren’t leaving me!” I said through the tears as I started the compressions. “Don’t leave us!” I cried looking down at my stomach.

I blew some air into his lungs, his lips were soft but cold. My tears fell splattering onto his emotionless face as I continued the compressions.

“I love you Harry. Just wake up for me baby!”

I heard a groan and a cough as Harry’s eyes started to roll open. That’s when I saw it. A half empty pill packet rolled from his hand. No. Nooo! I pulled him up to the toilet and stuck my fingers down his throat. He started gagging as the contents of his stomach left his mouth. I kept going until I knew his stomach was empty. He was alive... but barely. Now all I needed to do was stay with him until the ambulance arrived. I heard the sirens start to fade in from a distance. How long had he been out?!

“Lucy?” he paused “Am I dead yet?” His voice was weak. “This hurts. I wanna be dead.” His words started to fade as his eyes rolled back in his head.

I cried and cried and cried at his words. “Haa-aaa-rr-yy” I said through hiccupping sobs. “How could you be so stupid?! How could you do this to me? How could you do this to our baby?” I said nodding to my stomach.

I pushed myself towards him and pulled him in my arms as I stroked his sweaty curls away from his head. Then everything turned into a blur. I sort of remember the ambulance taking us away and arriving at the hospital. I sat in the chairs that lined the hallway outside Harry’s room. Then there was a lot of beeping and doctors rushing into his room. Then Harry was wheeled out on a bed. I wanted so badly to follow, to ask what was wrong, but I couldn’t tell my body to move. I was dazed.

A kind nurse knocked me out of my daze by shaking me gently. I looked up.

“Sorry dear. I didn’t mean to give you a fright. Lucy right?”

I nodded.

“Do you want a glass of water? A change of clothes? You have been sitting here for hours!”
Hours? It had felt like half an hour at the most. But there it was, the clock ticking on the wall, signalling that it had been 6 hours since I had found Harry’s lifeless body on my bathroom floor. Then it hit me; I had been here for hours and I had just chosen to foolishly sit out here instead of being in the room with Harry?! I was a coward!

I shook my head not wanting to be anymore selfish then I had already been.

“Lucy...there was a complication.”

She sat down next to me and held my hand. She looked at me empathically. No, no. Was she about to tell me...no! This couldn’t be true. I started sobbing into her shoulder. Harry wasn’t dead. I wouldn’t believe it. I couldn’t!

“Lucy. Harry is still fighting but we have had to rush him into emergency surgery. He consumed a lot of those pills and it has triggered a bleed in his brain. There is only a slim chance that he will make it. A lot of people come out of this surgery and are left brain dead. Lucy, if this happens, we need you to make the decision of turning the life machine off. You’re all he’s got.” She squeezed my hand before getting up and walking to the nurses’ station.

My brain turned into a frenzy before returning to its dazed state. After what felt like all of eternity the nurse returned to me. She looked at me, an unreadable expression crossing her face.

“Do you have news?” I asked impatiently.

“Yes...”

She sat down next to me and took my hand in hers. Once again I cried, for what seemed like the 100th time that day.
