The Past

Chapter 12- Way To Ruin A Moment

My eyes opened to the light that shone through the cracks in the blinds. I groaned at the unpleasant feeling, as my eyes adjusted. I looked around me at the devastation that our actions last night had left on Harry’s bedroom. The pillow that I lay on had obviously become a victim of the proceedings, with feathers falling around the room. I laughed at the thought. I looked to my right and saw that the bed was empty. I got up and looked through the crack in Harry’s door that led to the lounge room. Harry sat sipping tea, watching whatever was on TV. I couldn’t help but smile. Smile at the way the light shone on him and how his green eyes sparkled. I had fallen, completely and utterly, head over heels, soppy and romantically, in love with this boy. He was dangerous and dark, and completely unpredictable and mysterious but so undeniably perfect. My eyes traced the scars on his skin and the black ink that was a permanent reminder of his past that had been hidden up until last night. My foot slipped, making a creaking sound with the wooden floor. Harry turned to look at me. My cheeks became a shade of bright red. I had been spotted staring at him like a hopeless looney. I smiled at him as though I didn’t mind getting caught out and ushered him back to bed. He smiled back at me, before getting up and walking back to his bedroom. I grabbed his hand and pulled him into a warm embrace. I felt whole. I felt complete. I felt safe. I got into bed, as he followed pulling me close to him.

“Good morning, beautiful” he said to me as he stroked my hair.

“Good morning, Haz” I replied, dazed by his words.

They still felt unnatural; it was unknown territory to have a boy treat me right, and compliment me. It felt weird to hear those words directed at me, and leaving his perfectly shaped lips. It was foreign, but it felt right.

Last night’s phone call entered my train of thought. The way Harry tried to cover up the call. Who was ‘she’? And who was on the other end of the phone? I couldn’t help myself from wondering, and soon that thought left the realms of my mind and exited my lips without my mind giving permission for my lips to do so.

“What was that phone call about?” I blurted, before covering my mouth, my mind suddenly catching up to my lips intentions.

Shit. What was wrong with me? I never thought about what came out of my mouth. Now I just looked like a nosy body.

He laughed, obviously at my reaction not my words.

“Oh, just an old friend” he said, before changing the topic. “So what are we going to do today?”

I didn’t buy it, but decided not to push further.

“Mmhh we could go for a walk?”

“Boring” he retorted.

“You haven’t been on a walk with me. Boring does not even come close. We could have a picnic, and just hang out. Come on, it’ll be fun.” I challenged, trying to disolve his obvious disappointment to my lack of creativity.

“Okay, okay, sounds like a plan.” He replied, a little spritelier. He got up and went downstairs. I pulled on my clothes and followed him downstairs.

By the time I was downstairs, Harry had already packed a picnic and was ready to leave. I followed him out to the car.

I looked at the window as I watched the endless forest pass by me. I noted the animals that continued with their lives, unaware of the cruel world they lived in. I envied them. We had been driving for a good half hour. I looked over at Harry who was playing with the radio. He flicked over stations before leaving it on a song I knew all too well. Stay. Harry began to sing as Mikky sung his part. His voice was breathtakingly beautiful.

“You sing?” I asked, gobsmacked.

He laughed at my reaction.

“I guess so.”

“Harry! You are seriously amazing! Your voice is so...calming and beautiful” I exclaimed.

Harry just laughed and continued singing. I looked out the window, the view perfectly matching the tune of the song. After an hour we arrived in a deserted car park surrounded by a dense forest. The tires made a crunching sound with the gravel before he shut off the engine.

“Here we are!” he looked at me, before opening the door, getting out and racing to open mine. I smiled at his cute but kind gesture.

By the time we got to the meadow, the sun was setting and the glistening in the nearby lake added to the serenity of the situation. The air smelt of rain, but the sky suggested that it had not rained in weeks, with nothing but blue covering the expanding horizon. The sun kissed the skin on my shoulders and warmed me from head to toe. I lay down leaning my head back, taking in the sun rays that my skin desperately craved. This was the kind of weather I missed from Australia, and my skin desperately craved a good soaking of vitamin D that it had so badly lacked since being in the UK. I swear the new colour of my skin could not be healthy. I looked up only to see Harry’s face close to mine. His lips came very close, his hot breath just inches from my face, teasing me. I crashed my lips to his. He kissed back, his tongue tracing my lips. His kisses were soft, and delicate. Any worries that may have been invading my mind vanished because in this moment, everything was perfect. Then I remembered. We had school tomorrow. I broke the kiss and groaned at that very thought. Harry raised his eyebrows in question. Great, way to ruin a moment.
