The Last Goodbye

Truth.or.Dare

“It’s just a coincidence.” I said unsure as to how my sketches looked identical to him.

He was watching me closely and the effects from his dark green eyes were starting to haunt me.

“A coincidence.” He repeated as he slammed the book shut.

“You know I may have just seen you in an old magazine article and forgot.” I told him.
“Really, what was the name of my band?”

“Ummm…One Location!” I proclaimed. He was trying to hold back his laughter. “One Direction.” He corrected.

“I was close. How are you not freezing?” I asked him trying to change the topic because this was not making me feel any less creeped out. “You’re deflecting and I’ve gone into hypothermia.” He said jokingly. I slid over to him and took part of the blanket I had around me and wrapped the other half around Harry. We sat there in what felt like a human cocoon.

“You know I only know two things about you. One you have a deep british accent and secondly you were a singer that’s it.”

“What else do you want to know?”

“Like what was your life like? What was some of your favorite things to do? Who was Harry?” I said sounding like a nagging news reporter. He stared at the cover of the book in his lap. His face was pale. Water from his hair ran down to his face. And I still couldn't comprehend that he wasn't real.

"For the most part of my life I was very happy. I was grateful for whatever aspect that came into my life. As years past so did that happiness. Partying and drinking uncontrollably with women that I would forget their names the next day. And that's not even the half of it."
His expression remained solemn and as he spoke his eyes were still fixated on that stupid sketch book "I stopped talking to most of my friends. I only ever argued when it came to our music. I'm pretty certain that if the five of us was together now. We would regret everything harsh word we had ever said."

“So how does the story end?” I asked him. He leaned back and rested on the backs of his elbow causing me to fall down with him.

“You really want to continue this depressing story?” Harry asked.

“In my defense I thought it was going to be rainbows and sunshine.” I smiled. I felt like something was poking me in the back. I took the blanket off of me and I noticed a clear bottle was poking out. “Oh this looks disgusting.” I said shaking the bottle. It was a sealed glass bottle of alcohol that had a light brown tinge. Harry held his hand out reaching for the it.

“Dutch liquor.” Harry said reading the label. “I got an idea on how to pass the time away .” He said.

“And what might that be?” I asked him curiously. "We play a game of Truth or Dare,...but whoever doesn't answer a dare or truth has to drink from this."

"So i'm guessing you're the bad influence?" I laughed.

"Exactly! So are you in?" Harry asked again flashing a devilish grin. I knew this was going to be a bad idea as soon as the words came from his mouth. Yet I still agreed to this ridiculous game.

"Alright I'll go first." I wiggled around shifting from leg to another. While Harry stayed laying on his side. "Truth or Dare?"

"Truth." Harry said.

"How old are you really?" He leaned his head back and let out a dry laugh then pulled the top off the bottle. "Next! Truth or Dare?"

"This is pointless because you're just going avoid all of them." I said.

"I promise you I'm not."

"Truth." I said going ahead an picking one.

"How are you still sane?" Harry asked. "I'm not." I said picking up the drink that sat between us. Even though I answered the question I still felt like I needed it. "Truth or Dare?"

"I'll go for a dare."

" I dare you to honestly answer the following question... If your a ghost does that mean zombies are real?" I laughed.

"Hilarious! You're jokes never fail to amuse me." Harry said sarcastically.
"These are very important things to know."
"Truth or dare?" He asked.

"Another truth." I declared.

"If you were given a second chance to doing something over would you?"

"It depends really. Some things are better left the way they already are." The game continued on for what felt like hours and shortly turned into questions and answers. We were at the bottom of the drink and at this point the truth started to come out on its own. "Okay I have a good one."

"Yes dying sucks. I don't recommend it." Harry said trying to get the last drop out of the bottle.

"No that wasn't it." I told him. Harry leaned in closer with our faces barely touching noses. "I think I should do the last one." He said. I repeated his movement and almost filled in the gap between us.

"Shoot." I said. "Ask your grandmother about August 19th." He said.

"What? How do you know my grandmother and what does her telling me about August 19th have to do with anything?"

"Something you need to know that looks like you won't be remembering ." He blatantly said. This was the moment I warned myself about. The caution sign that was finally forcing me to listen.

"I should get home if Beth left the dance, my parents are probably looking or me."

"Yeah you should go." He sighed.

Without hesitation I tried pulling myself up so I could finally leave. Neither one of us said anything to each other as I got up to go. I couldn't believe it. After all this time still nothing. The two of us walked in circles and that made me more frustrated. What wasn't he saying?
It finally stopped raining, but it felt like it got even colder. I walked down the boardwalk thinking about that day specifically. I didn't look back to see if Harry was behind me. I kept looking forward.

The only thing I cared about was what didn't I remember and what the hell happened on August 19th...
