It Couldn't Be (A Zayn Malik Fanfiction)
Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I woke up to the sound of my alarm clock singing “Best Song Ever”. Crap. I was expecting to sleep late this Saturday.
I took a deep breath and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I decided that
I might as well go on and take a shower before I eat breakfast. So I took a shower so I could wash my hair, and threw on a t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants.
I trudged down the stairs and heard nothing but silence in the kitchen. I guess my mom wasn’t up yet. I looked at the microwave clock and saw 8:32. Rodney had probably partied last night.
Rodney was my 20-year-old brother, who goes to Mississippi College. I don’t know why he chose an in-state college, especially one so close, but he did, and my mom still treats him like a kid, letting him live here and get home-cooked meals.
I paced around the kitchen not knowing what to do. I was hungry but I didn’t feel like cooking. I could watch TV, but that would also not satisfy me. I sat down at the kitchen table and stare at the crevices in the wood.
The next thing I hear is the ring of my phone. I don’t know who in the world would call me this early. I trudged back up the stairs and found my phone on the floor next to my bed. It’s Jared.
“Hello,” I say.
“Good morning,” he says, in what sounds like a husky morning voice.
“Good morning,” I say. “How did you sleep last night?”
“Well babe,” he says, I could tell he was smiling on the other end, “I felt pretty good knowing that you went to bed happy.”
I could’ve died right there on the floor. Why he would care about my happiness I have no idea.
Just the fact that he’d said it made me feel cared about. And that’s just something that you can never get over.
“Well, I thank you kindly.” I didn’t want to seem too dramatic.
“No problem. So I was wondering if you were free at all today?”
“As a matter of fact, you have caught me on a day when I have nothing to do.”
“Well, then that’s just awesome. Can I pick you up in about 20 minutes?
“Definitely.”
******************************
He picked me up around nine. He told me that he was taking me to breakfast, which was fine by me because I hadn’t eaten anything. I glanced over at him out of the corner of my eye and noticed that he seemed deep in thought.
“Is something on your mind?” Yeah… I’m nosy.
“Well, yeah,” he seemed to ponder whether or not he should say what he was going to say. “You remember when you told me Zayn was your favorite of One Direction?” I said yes.
“Well, is there any particular reason?”
The question puzzled me. Guys don’t usually ask why you like One Direction; they just go on and call them fags. Which was an easy way to piss me off.
“Um… yeah. He’s really cute. He seems like he stays true to himself. I don’t know. I guess he just appealed to me more.”
“How much do you know about him?”
“Well…” Was I really going to tell this guy that I had a whole list of things on each of the members- ranging from blood types, pants sizes, and how long there private parts were? Yep.
He then burst out laughing. I had no clue of what was so funny. I asked him.
“It’s just the fact that you know all of this stuff about people who you’ve never even met,” he said, still recovering. “I mean, how do you know that this information is even legit?”
“Well some things, I’m sure, have been confirmed by their tailors maybe. And maybe some really smart people who know how to guess just by their pants sizes. I don’t know.”
“Hmm. Nice point,” he said. He seemed to think about this. “Oh, I know what I was going to ask
you! You said you were in a band?”
“Yeah, the school band. I play the clarinet.”
“Really? That sounds cool.” He pulled into Denny’s. “This is like my favorite restaurant down here.”
He didn’t know that IHOP was way better, but I didn’t want to tell him any different. He seemed pretty sure that Denny’s was the best so I just let it be.
We walked into the restaurant and got a waiter to take us to the table. We sat down and I contemplated on what I was going to get.
“Is it really that hard to choose?” he asked, smiling.
I looked up from the menu and looked into his eyes, trying so hard not to get completely lost into them. I looked back down. I felt so vulnerable. The last thing I needed was to fall in love with a guy
I’d known for a week like in some lame love story. But when I looked up again, and caught him staring intensely at me, I knew it was inevitable. If Jared went home today, I couldn’t live with myself.
“Molly, can I ask you something?” he asked.
“Yeah sure Jared. Anything.”
“Well, I’m going to be here only for like two more weeks, and I can’t possibly leave here without telling you how I feel about you.”
“Then tell me now,” I said. Just tell me. So that I can tell you too.
“I can’t stop thinking about you.”
Yes. Keep going.
He stopped talking and sat back against his chair. “I’m sorry,” he said, “I just don’t know why it’s
so hard to talk to you.”
“It’s okay Jared,” I said, actually disappointed, though I tried to not show it. I don’t know what I was thinking.
I looked behind Jared to this little girl with an I LOVE ZAYN T-shirt on. She looked around 10 or 11. I loved seeing people wearing One Direction memorabilia. It showed that they didn’t care what people thought about them. I had a few pieces of it myself.
It seemed like there was something wrong with her though. Or she had a staring problem. She kept her eye on our table, staring mostly at Jared. I heard him saying something, but I just blocked it out, thinking of all the possible reasons why she would stare at him so weirdly.
“Molly?”
I snapped out of my daze. “Yeah?”
“Did you hear what I said?”
“No. I didn’t.” I said. “Jared do you know that little girl behind you?”
He looked behind his shoulder.
“No I don’t think I do. I don’t see how I could know anyone here. Remember I’m from New York.”
“Right. I remember. It’s just that she keeps staring at you so hard.”
“Oh. I don’t know.”
I looked at Jared really hard myself. But couldn’t see anything that made him stand out besides
him being super hot. I looked back at the girl. She still seemed to be staring and was completely ignoring her family. Some seconds later, she got up and walked towards the back. I didn’t want to turn around because I thought it’d be rude. So I just kept talking to Jared.
She walked back to her table, but out of the corner of my eye I saw her look at our table again.
“Are you still wondering about that girl?” Jared asked.
“Yes. She is freaking me out.”
"Don’t worry about her.” He took my hand into his. Hopefully he didn’t feel my pulse. “I think I can say what I want to say now.”
“Well, tell me,” I said.
“Um…excuse me?” I heard a little girl’s voice ask.
I looked to the left of me and saw the same girl who kept staring.
“Yes?” I asked.
She didn’t look me, though. She kept staring at Jared. And when Jared looked at her. I really did feel that was something was about to go wrong.
“OH MY GOD!!!! NO WAY, NO WAY! You have a new girlfriend?!!!” she screamed.
“What are you talking about? How do you even know who he is?”
“Don’t act like you don’t know he is! You’re dating Zayn Malik!!”
