That Little Coffee Shop on the Corner

Chapter Two: Broken Hearted?

Mimi’s POV

It had been about a month since Louis visited me for the first time. He came to the café daily now, always in that hat and those sunglasses. We had gotten to know each other really well. I had been working on my own more and Louis insisted on helping when I was.

He could now make everything the café has to offer. He also came up with new ideas for the café, like advertisements and new items. He shopped for the café too. We were never out of anything because he was constantly making sure we had things.

I use to be the one to do all that stuff and I still do but Louis does most of it. It’s nice to not work so hard. It is also kind of weird though because now I have a lot more free time since the café closes earlier than before.

When the café was closed Louis and I would stay behind and talk with some hot chocolate. It had become an annual thing, and all the customers knew about it. We usually stayed for an hour or two but sometimes we stayed so long I could only get about 3 hours of sleep. It didn’t bother me though, in fact I enjoyed it.

It was Christmas Eve and the café was closed today. That meant no Louis. I tried to distract myself from him by driving around London, shopping for things I needed and for fun. The bed of my truck was full of shopping bags as I drove through town.

I plugged in my iPod at a stoplight and started playing Things We Lost In The Fire by Bastille. Since my windows were up and I was the only one in the car I sang along as I drive when the light turns green:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things We Lost In The Fire by Bastille

Things we lost to the flames
Things we'll never see again
All that we have amassed
Sits before us, shattered into ash

These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire
These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire

We sat and made a list
Of all the things that we had
Down the backs of table tops
Ticket stubs and your diaries

I read them all one day
When loneliness came and you were away
Oh they told me nothing new,
But I love to read the words you used

These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire
These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire

I was the match and you were the rock
Maybe we started this fire
We sat apart and watched
All we had burned on the pyre

(You said) we were born with nothing
And we sure as hell have nothing now
(You said) we were born with nothing
And we sure as hell have nothing now

These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire
These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire

Do you understand that we will never be the same again?
Do you understand that we will never be the same again?
The future's in our hands and we will never be the same again
The future's in our hands and we will never be the same again

These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire
These are the things, the things we lost
The things we lost in the fire fire fire

These are the things, the things we lost
These are the things we lost in the fire fire fire

Flames – they licked the walls
Tenderly they turned to dust all that I adore

As the song ended my truck shook.

“No, no, no, no, no, no, no.” I say and pull over to the side of the road. I went about five more feet until my truck shuttered to a stop. It sat there for a minute before I leaned my head back in my seat. I run both my hands down my face and sigh. My truck was very old and shut down a lot. I should get a new car but I didn’t have enough money, even though I work all the time. I put my hands in my lap and stare at the ceiling for a while.

“Out of the millions of times you can break down, you had to do it now. I am miles away from my house with tons of groceries and no money to pay for a tow truck. I don’t even have a phone to call a tow truck.” I mumble.

I sigh again and open my door. I close it and walk over to a nearby bench. I had to think about what I was going to do and didn’t feel like sitting in my 7 year old truck right now. I wanted to stay near it though, so I could make sure no one tried to take anything. For a minute I look up at the shy and watch as it starts to snow.

“What am I going to do?” I say putting my face in my hands and groaning a little.

“Mimi!?” I look up at the mention of my name and I see Louis at the door of the building I was currently sitting in front of.

“Louis.” I say standing up quickly. I felt nervous all of the sudden. Why was he here? I don’t want him to see me in this kind of situation!

He walks towards me.” What are you doing here?”

I rub the back of my neck sheepishly and give a nervous laugh,” My truck kind of broke down.”

I point to it and he frowns when he sees my truck. I continue,” I was shopping all day so the bed of the truck is full of shopping bags. I can’t rally walk 17 miles back to my house with all of that stuff. I would call someone but I don’t have a phone. And even if I did have a phone I have no money to pay for a tow truck.”

He looks from me to the truck and back at me again. He opens his mouth to speak when someone at the door shout, “Louis!”

We both look and see a group of four other boys at the door. They quickly came out and surrounded him. A curly haired guy, who said Louis’s name earlier asked, “Where have you been?”

A blonde guy spoke, “Yeah, we have to finish recording.”

A black haired boy said, “When they say we can take a break, it doesn’t mean you can come down here and talk to some girl. “ He turned to me with an apologetic smile, “Sorry about that, love.”

The rest of the group turned to me and a brown haired boy said, “Oh, is this that girl you’ve been talking about?”

I blush at that. The curly haired guy hit Louis on the back of the head, “Why did you invite her!?”

I wave my arms in front of me, “Wow, wow, wow! Hold on a minute! No one invited me, my truck just happened to break down here. Now, who are you?”

They paused for a minute and then the four of them said together, “We’re One Direction.”

First I was shocked, then I was angry. I walk up to Louis, and the four guys backed up. I hit Louis on the back of the head.

“Ow!” He said.

“What the hell!” I yell, “I have been talking to you for a month and you didn’t think it was important to tell me, I don’t know, that you’re famous! Much less you in a boy band! And you have tons of money, and you get to travel, and that’s the reason you always wear those stupid hats and sunglasses!”

“What was I supposed to say, I figured out quickly that you dislike my band! Sure I have to wear discuses, and have more money than you, and travel more, but I don’t care about that! You treated me like I was a normal person!”

“I would have treated you like that if I knew who you were!” I glare at him before going back to the bench and sitting down, by now the light snow turned into a full on blizzard. I couldn’t even see the five boys.

“Mimi! Come inside!” I heard Louis yell, and then heard the door to the building open. I guess all of the boys were heading in.

“No! I’m not going to be in the same building as someone who I hate!” I yell. I was cold, my stuff was being ruined, I was now crying, and in a terrible situation.

I felt him grab my arm but didn’t look at him as he shouted, “I’m sorry, okay. Now get inside before you get sick.”

I stand up and yank my arm out of his hand I go into the building and sit on a couch in the lobby. The boys were nice enough to carry all my stuff in and call a tow truck. After a while the four boys came up to me and the curly haired boy introduced them. After he said, “Look we have maybe 30 minutes left of recording. We have a house where the five of us stay sometimes. It’s closer than your house is right now. We have a guest room that you can use if you want to stay the night. We can take your groceries and we’ll help you get your car back tomorrow.”

I sniff and whip away my tears, “Sure, as long as I don’t have to deal with Louis to much.”
