Run Away

Chapter 1

“Alexis Marie! Get down here now!” my stepmother’s voice boomed from downstairs.

“It’s Lexi.” I shouted back and stomped down the stairs. What could she possibly want now?

“I need you to go pick up Amanda from her modeling class. I would do it, but I have an appointment.” she ordered.

“Don’t you mean date?” I grumbled, but unfortunately she heard me.

“Excuse me young lady, but I am a respectable woman and I would never, ever get over your father that easily. It’s only been half of a year.” She said and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes.

“Really? Then why do you always dress up so provocatively for your ‘appointments’?” I retorted and crossed my arms.

“Listen here, Alexis, I don’t care what you think. Your father is dead due to an unfortunate car accident. I was heartbroken, at first, but then I realized I was wasting my time because, you know what? He’s not coming back. Now, you only have a few minutes to get Amanda.” She said and shoved the car keys in my hand. I yanked my hand away from her touch and walked out of our front door. After slamming it, I got into the car and drove at a slow pace to get Amanda, my lame excuse of a stepsister. Finally, after driving for a good few extra minutes, I pulled up in front of a white building that had a girl with long brown hair and an angry expression in front of it.

“Are you going to get in?” I asked after waiting in front of her for about a minute.

“Whatever.” She mumbled and got in. I drove us all the way back home in silence. Every time I glanced over at Amanda, she was on her phone with an emotionless face. Sometimes I felt bad for her. Yeah, she was spoiled rotten, but only because her mother pulled her away from her father and then married another man, a.k.a. my father. When I had parked in our driveway and pulled the keys out, Amanda was crying.

“Hey what’s wrong?” I know I hate her most of the time, but she needs someone right now, obviously.

“It’s j-just that I-I hate you so much!” She said, ending the stuttering and starting to laugh. Classic Amanda, just like her mother, being a cold-hearted bitch. Instead of replying, I just got out of the car and stormed into the house. I was done with them, so done. All they ever did was tease me or leave me out or just make me feel like crap, and I at least knew I deserve better than that. I quickly went into my room and locked the door to pack. This was too much for me, I could be living with Avery or something, not these witches. My hands found a bag and opened it quickly, and I soon found myself at the dresser, opening the drawers. After managing to take as much as I needed, I shoved my clothes into the bag and struggled to close the zipper, but I finally succeeded and grabbed another smaller bag to put the last necessities that I owned in it, along with a picture of my mom and dad.

“Lexi! Wake up!” The voice in my ears was unwelcome and annoying, causing me to rise from my deep slumber. A clock in the corner of my room read 7:00 pm. Wow, I’d slept for a good few hours, but why was Amanda waking me up? Usually they’d just eat without me.

“What do you want?” I grumbled through the door that she was banging on.

“Mom and I are going out for a meeting with my modeling coach. We’ll be back late. There’s dinner in the fridge.” She said and I could tell she was overly joyous about this turn of events, leaving me at home. It was too bad for her that this worked perfectly for my plans.

“Okay. Are you guys taking my dad’s car or the family car?” I asked, already knowing the answer.

“Obviously the family one. Why on Earth would we take your dad’s? It was in an accident.” She told me as if I didn’t know that.

“Okay.” I stated and began lifting my two bags onto my unmade bed. Her footsteps faded out and a few minutes later I could hear a car pulling out of the driveway. I was free. Quickly, I dragged my bags out of my room and out of the house to my dad’s car. I opened the trunk and placed the heavy bag in there and then put my small bag in the passenger seat. I closed the car doors and then ran back into the house. In the fridge, my dinner was just pasta, so I took the container out and began to heat it up, then as it warmed, my legs led me to my father’s old study where he hid everything valuable to him. I opened his desk drawer and felt around the top of it for an envelope. My fingers brushed the end of it and then latched themselves on the top to pull it down. Once I had gotten the white package in my hand, I went back to the kitchen and pulled my dinner out. I closed the container up and brought it with me to the car, along with the envelope. I felt around the top of the car’s front tire and took car keys off of it. The car door opened and I got in and put the keys in the ignition as I placed the pasta container and the envelope in the cupholders. The car door slammed shut and I reversed the car out of the garage and then sped away from the house. I was leaving and hopefully never coming back ever.

“Avery! Trust me! They do not want me there, no one will make a fuss!” I told my overly protective and bossy brother.

“Lex, you do realize that Shannon and Amanda were your only family, and even though Shannon is our ‘evil stepmother’, she’s going to look for you.” He said and I could hear his worry in his voice.

“Ave, please listen to me, I’m going to be okay. In just a few hours I’ll be with you in Doncaster. That’s all you need to think about. I love you. Please just go to bed and forget about me for now.”

“I love you too Lexi. Be safe and call me as soon as you’re here.”

“Okay. Bye Avery.”

“Bye Lexi.” Goodness he was so demanding. A sign on the side of the road said 20 more miles until a pit stop. I guess that’s where I was stopping tonight at-- it was already 11 pm. I sped down the deserted road when at last I pulled into the exit and found a small cheap hotel. I parked the old vehicle and got out, locking it right after with my wallet in my hand. I pushed a loose strand of hair out of my face and tucked it behind my ear as I opened the door. The heater warmed me up from the cold air outside and I walked over to the main desk.

“Hello, miss, would you like a room?” A girl asked.

“Yes please, just for one night.” I told her and heard the door open behind me. The girl looked up and her eyes widened. I watched as she released her long red hair from its ponytail and put a little bit of lipstick on while pretending to be hunched over her computer. My brain told me not to turn around, but by instinct I did, and wow. There was a boy, probably around my age or older with brown hair and brown eyes. His arms were crossed over his chest and he had a tank top on, showing off his muscles. Around his waist, a flannel shirt was tied and he had baggy jeans beneath it. My head shot back to face the girl when the guy looked back at me and almost caught me staring.

“Here’s your room key for number 12 and here’s the receipt. Have a nice stay!” the girl said and her eyes flickered back over at the boy behind me.

“Thanks,” I mumbled and walked out of the lobby and to room 12. I unlocked the door and ran over to the bed, flopping myself on it. My mouth opened and I began to yawn, causing me to realize just how tired I was. I shut my eyes but then quickly re-opened them when I remembered I needed to get some clothes out of my car. I groaned and walked out of the room, fumbling around in my pockets for the car keys. After letting myself in the car, I pulled a change of clothes out and then relocked the jeep. When I turned around, the guy from inside was leaning on the wall and looking at me.

“May I help you?” I asked and approached him.

“No, but I can help you.”

“Oh really?”

“I figure you’re either going to Doncaster or Manchester from here. Now I know Doncaster because of the way your expression changed when I said that. Doncaster isn’t how it used to be. It can be dangerous in certain areas and depending on where you’re from, you could get in the middle of it all. I just wanted to tell you this, don’t forget where you belong, whether it be Doncaster, London, or even Ireland. I don’t really know you, but be safe out there.”

“I-I… Th-thanks?” I said, but I wasn’t sure if it was true. “I-I’m Lexi, by the way.”

“Liam.” He replied. With that, I walked back to my room. Now I was officially terrified to go to Doncaster, but there was no turning back anymore. Liam’s words remained in my head though, ‘don’t forget where you belong.’ But I don’t know where I belong. With one final sigh, I padded over to my bed and dropped my weight on it. If I was going to last this life, sleep was vital.
