Fixing Mistakes

Liam's POV
I walked into Tea Time after a long day in the studio. One Direction had had a good run, but when I was 23 we all decided that we needed a break after years of nonstop working. Now, 2 years later, the boys and I were reuniting to write a 'comeback' album. We were no longer the teenage boys singing about stolen hearts and last first kisses. Each one of us had had our share of serious relationships and it was time to express our experiences to the world. As I opened the door to the cafe, the sound of a sweet, full singing voice drifted towards me. I looked around, and in the front of the room sat a girl, maybe a few years younger than me, with light brown, curled hair framing her pale face. She was strumming a guitar, and singing a tune that seemed happy and light. As she finished performing, a huge smile spread over her face. I felt butterflies in my stomach as I looked towards her. She was beautiful.
***
I learned that the girl's name was Grace Masciale from an older man enjoying his coffee. Realizing that I had actually come into the shop for a purpose other than women, I made my way over to the counter to order. As I walked away with my coffee, a woman with her arms full turned around and collided with me. When I looked up, I saw it was Grace. She was even more gorgeous up close. Her hazel eyes had a look of terror when she made eye contact, and her face turned beet red. She was embarassed, but I found her blushing to be really cute. When I started the conversation, I could tell that she recognized me and was trying to stay calm. I had respect for that. So many girls I tried to talk to ended up getting really excited and it could get frustrating after all these years. I was only 25, but I hadn't been in many serious relationships and I was getting towards the age where I wanted to be with one special person. Harry had so many female friends that he never ran out of blind dates to set me up on. I appreciated his help, but so far none of them were looking for anything more than a good time.
Suddenly, Grace was distracted by a text message. Her entire attitude changed as she cursed under her breath and ran out of the coffee shop. In her haste, I realized that she had left her guitar behind. This could be my way to see Grace again.

Grace's POV
As soon as I left the coffee shop, I flagged down a taxi. I had no time to take the subway, although it would have saved me a few dollars. That was the least of my concern. Thoughts raced through my mind. What if Andrea wasn't ok? I had always vowed to myself that I would never walk away from someone on bad terms. Life was an unknown, and it was always a possibility that I would never see that person again. I had been wrong to take my anger out on Andrea; she was always so caring and thoughtful and I was not. I was living in my own fantasty, working so hard for a dream that might never come true, and ignoring the people that stuck by me no matter what.
When I arrived at the hospital I was directed to the ICU, where I met a disheveled-looking Michael at the nurses' station.
"What the hell happened?!" I exclaimed.
"We were walking to Times Square, and as we were crossing the street, a car sped through the intersection. I tried to get in front of Andrea, but the vehicle came too fast. A drunk driver hit her," Michael confessed. The look on his face was one of pure grief. He really did care about Andrea.
"Is she going to be ok?" Nothing except my best friend mattered right now.
"The doctors said that she was pretty banged up. There was blood everywhere, and she had broken bones. Their main concern is brain damage though."
I was speechless. I was pretty sure that watching Andrea live with severe brain damage would be worse than losing her.
"It's all a big question. She could be fine and walk away from this without any major injuries. We can't lose hope." Michael was trying to find the positive in a seemingly impossible situation. I had to hand it to him, it was somewhat comforting.
"You're right. We have to stay positive- for Andrea."
"For Andrea," Michael agreed.
Just as I went to sit down in the waiting room, Heart Skips a Beat came on. I looked at my phone: Incoming Call-Unknown Number. It was probably some telemarketer trying to get me to buy something I couldn't afford. I hit ignore. Seconds later, a message popped up on my screen:
From: Unknown Number
Hi Grace, it's Liam Payne. You left your guitar in the cafe. I didn't want anyone to walk away with it so I took it with me.
As I read the message, I realized that in my haste I had forgotten to pick up my guitar before I left. And now it was in the hands of THE Liam Payne. It took a lot of energy to contain my emotions. I remembered how I had literally ran away from Liam without saying a word. He must have thought I was some crazy lunatic. Oh well. He had my guitar and I needed to get it back.

Liam's POV
When I got back to my apartment, I looked through Grace's guitar case. Tucked inside was a card with her name and phone number.
"Perfect," I thought to myself. "Now she's not impossible to find."
I tried calling Grace, but got her voicemail instead. Realizing that she was probably freaking out about the guitar, I texted her.
From:Liam
Hi Grace, it's Liam Payne. You left your guitar in the cafe. I didn't want anyone to walk away with it so I took it with me.
Several minutes later, I received a reply.
From: Grace
Oh my gosh Liam, thank you so much for getting my guitar! I actually forgot that I left it behind.
I typed back:
From:Liam
That seems like something big to forget! Everything ok?
From:Grace
Everything's ok, thanks. I'm sorry I rushed out on you. I got a text that my best friend was in an accident and I needed to get to the hospital.
Yikes! That sounded horrible. Grace seemed like a really nice person who didn't deserve tough stuff like this. Not that anyone really deserves it.
From:Liam
Oh wow, hope everything is ok. Can I do anything to help?
From:Grace
Thank you for caring. I think we've got everything for now. And thanks for taking care of my guitar :)
From:Liam
No problem babe:) Oh speaking of the guitar, I'll be in the studio tomorrow. Do you want to come by to pick it up?
From:Grace
That would be fantastic! Just text me the address. I've got to run now. Goodnight Liam.
From:Liam
Goodnight, Grace.
I sent her the address and put my phone on my bedside table. I crawled beneath the covers and fell asleep. As I drifted into slumber, I thought of Grace and the sweet sound of her voice.

Grace's POV
I was nearly asleep in my chair when Michael tapped me on the shoulder. I looked at my watch. It was 4 AM, 6 hours since I had arrived.
"Grace, the doctors want to talk to us."
I was instantly more alert, and stood up.
A nurse motioned for us to follow her down the hallway and into a room. Looking frail and weak, Andrea was lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to a ton of IVs and tubes. Her eyes were closed.
"You must be the friends of Andrea. My name is Dr. Martin, the physician assigned to her case." He shook our hands before continuing.
"Andrea was badly injured in the accident. She suffers from a fractured right ankle, left tibia and clavicle. In addition, it is possible that she has encountered brain damage, to what extent we will not know for sure until she wakes up from the medically induced coma any time now."
As the doctor was speaking, Andrea stirred. She struggled to open her eyes. Dr. Martin went to her bedside and began talking to her calmly.
"Andrea, my name is Dr. Martin, you've been in a bad accident and you're in the hospital. Your friends Grace and Michael are here, and everything is ok now."
In a tiny voice, Andrea replied, "Who's Grace and Michael?"
I almost threw up right in the hospital room.
