Goodnight Moon.
She makes me strong.
Harry’s POV.
I woke up around 9PM and knowing Ashlynn I knew that as soon as she woke up she was going to be hungry. I pulled myself from the bed and made my way to the kitchen to make us some dinner. I decided to make one of her favorites, my cheesy spaghetti. I heated the noodles and the pasta sauce up and got the cheese out and threw it all in a bowl together. I went to grab a cup from the cabinet when I saw a DVD case sitting on the counter from her Dad. I wondered what it was, obviously it was a movie of some sort and it was obvious she hadn’t opened it to watch it. I walked to her room to wake her up and feed her.
“Ash…I made food. C’mon let’s eat something.” I lightly spoke to her and shook her a bit.
“What did you make?” she groggily asked.
“Your favorite.” I told her causing her eyes to shoot open.
“Harry’s famous cheesy spaghetti?” she asked so excitedly
“Just for you baby!” I told her causing her to smile.
She sat up and rubbed her eyes and threw a shirt on and slipped her glasses on. She was absolutely beautiful and I was a fool for ever hurting her.
“Thank you for making dinner.” She said.
“Least I could do for you.” I admitted.
“So let’s talk about all of this…yeah?” she asked. I knew we needed to.
“Yes. Lets” I said hoping she would start.
“You talk. Go on.” She informed me to start.
“Well…Gemma and I were at the market and she basically implied that there was something wrong with you because you seemed so perfectly made for me. I said some things I shouldn’t of and it got me thinking negatively about you.” I told her. I knew she was going to be disappointed in me. We have this thing that we never talk about each other negatively and that we speak to each other instead of to others about us.
“Oh…what did you say?” she asked now picking at her nails again.
“I said that you didn’t stand up for yourself all that often and that I didn’t like it. I also said that you walked away from things because it was easier and blew things off to avoid them. I’m sorry.”
“Well…both very true things.” She admitted in shame.
“But that didn’t give me a right to say it.” I told her trying to convince her that she was in fact perfect.
“Then what happened?” she asked.
“I got over thinking about everything. I think hard, you know that. I don’t know if it’s cause my sister and my mom kept telling me not to mess it up. Because when really wonderful things happen to me I always screw it up, I just didn’t want you to be one of those things. “ I said as she shook her head in agreement. “I’m sorry I snapped at you outside the house and for everything else.”
“Why did you cheat?” this was the hard one.
We sat there in silence for a second and I stared at the floor before answering.
“Answer me.” She said again.
“I just…I thought if I cheated on you that it would make me realize that you were the one. And that if I felt guilty about it, I could fix this.” I admitted.
“You’re an idiot. Obviously your hormones got the best of you.” She said laughing at me now.
“I don’t know what it was. But I’m sorry.” I told her now holding her hand.
“Yeah well. I’m sorry you did it too.” She said.
“Aren’t you going to ask about the throwing you against a wall?” I asked her, that was what I was most ashamed of at this point.
“No, cause I know exactly why that happened. You have anger issues Harry and I refuse to be in a relationship with someone who knows they have a problem and isn’t being pro active with it. So we stay together and you get help. Or you continue your ways and we part our ways. That’s it, those are your choices. I don’t want to be with you and have a beautiful family with you if you are going to be like that. Ya know? I’m too good for that and so are you. So you either get your shit together or this is over.” She said to me with no disregard.
“Okay, I want to be with you and you’re right about all of it. I need to fix this problem. I know it’s not ok. And the other night put it all in perspective for me when gem and my mom saw and even now when I’m looking at you.” I told her.
“Good. I promise Harry that if that ever happens again. This will end. And we will never speak again. “ she was hurt and I knew that and the ultimatum she was giving me was beyond fair. “ But that doesn’t mean for a second that we are 100% again, we still need to work on us. You and I both, ok?” she asked.
“You’re right. I love you.” I told her as I pulled her into my arms.
“I love you too Harry.” She said back as she looked up at me.
“Do you still want to go on tour with me in 2 weeks?” I asked her.
“I think so. I need to figure out my work schedule and move some things around but I would like too. Just depends on where we are at. “ she stated.
“Then I think you should give up your apartment…” I told her.
“What? Why?” she asked urgently.
“It doesn’t make sense you paying rent for a place that you’re not even going to be living at ya know? You can move in with me.” I told her.
“I don’t know. Let me talk to work first and we can cross that bridge when we get to it.” She told me. Made sense.
“Alright babe…but I do have a question.” I was going to ask her about the DVD.
“What is it?” she asked.
“The DVD your Dad sent you, the one on the counter. You going to watch it?” I asked her and watched her face sink.
“Uhm. I don’t know if I exactly want to. I’m scared of what I’ll see.” She said.
“Well if you change your mind, I’m here and I’ll watch it with you.” I told her knowing she probably wouldn’t want to do it alone.
“Will you really?” she asked me in awe.
‘Of course I will.” I informed her.
“Let’s watch it.” She said.
I got up from the bed and went to retrieve the DVD from the counter top in the kitchen. I walked it back to the room and slipped it into the DVD player and grabbed the remote and crawled back in bed with my beautiful girlfriend.
“You sure you want to do this?” I asked her.
“Positive.” She said, and with that I pushed play.
Ashlynn’s Father popped up on our screen and the last place I ever wanted him to be was in our room looking at is in bed. Ashlynn grabbed my hand and I pulled her into my body letting her know of the security I would give her. I kissed her temple and she blinked the few tears away the she per-maturely had.
“Hey Jett. Look kid, I’m sorry for all the things I’ve done and messed up. You know my head just isn’t right these days. I know you can never forgive me for what I have done to you, for I know the many ways I have messed you up. But I do love you and I am proud of you for following your dreams. Although I wish the route had been music, I guess photography is cool too. I got this magazine here called Your London Wedding, and I subscribed to it the minute your Mom told me you got that amazing job. This girl Eleanor, she says your friends in her interview and that she is currently in the process of match making you and her friend Harry, that kid I’m not too fond of.” His words caused Ashlynn and I to chuckle at the irony.
“Anyway, he’s with you right now. Isn’t he? Of course he is, you love him. Now look here you skinny fag. I don’t like you for a few reasons. Reason 1 is because your jeans are tighter than my daughters. Reason 2 is she probably loves you more than me. But I don’t know and I don’t like you but Ashlynn’s Mother Rose has told me that I need to trust you. So do me a solid, take care of my baby girl Jett and be good to her. Buy her things, she loves being spoiled. Take her to a football game here and there, ask her about the memories we have of us at games. Take her around the world, I don’t care if she quits that damn job of hers. Your rich; you got money. Take care of her and be there for her when she shuts everyone else out. Love her the way I can’t, remind her how wonderful she is when you have the chance because I am pretty sure I have it engraved into her mind that she is good for nothing which is a total lie. She’s everything I wish I could be. And Harry, don’t eff it up. If it helps I already like you more than that douche Brendan she was with.”
He spoke to us as if he was in the room and for a few minutes it felt like he was. Ashlynn was sitting in between my legs now and crying and laughing at the video her father made for her.
“And Jett….I’m sorry for never telling you how much I love you. You’re my girl, I’m just really sick in the head and I can’t really fix it. But shine baby shine. I would do anything today to make you feel my love. Remember when you were 8 and we were at the Longhorn game and they were playing the aggies and you yelled “Cut their legs off Coach, it’s obvious they are good for nothing!” after the fumble in your little country accent.Or when you were 4 and you peed your pants in the movie theater because you didn’t want to miss when Ariel kissed the Prince. I’ll never forget that little girl, but you’re not her anymore. You’re all grown now and moved away. And I am so proud of you. I love you Jett. And I am sorry.”
Click.
Then the screen went black.
“You ok?” I asked Ash. She was sitting on the bed laughing uncontrollably.
“That day at that movies, I left and told my mom. “ I don’t care if I peed, I saw them K-I-S-S!’ She was so mad at me. But I was so happy.” She said and it caused me to smile knowing she had forgotten about this happy memory that was fond.
“He loves you.” I told her.
“I know he does. Now I know he does. And I’m so happy.” She told me with happy tears running down her face and a happy smile. “I love you so much Harry. Everyone can see it.” She said.
“I love you more than anything Ashlynn Grace. I will do anything and everything for you.”
We lay in bed together and Ashlynn talked about the extremely happy times she had with her father. She told me about the talent contests they entered and about the time when he took her to meet Barney and she kicked him in the nuts. I was in love with this girl; with all the hell she had been through she was by far stronger than I would ever be in my life. She made me strong.
