The Beginning. (Sequel to The Ending)

Leaving it behind.

Samanthas POV
I watched him carefully. He stood still, his head hanging low on his shoulders as he tried not to let his emotions take over. My eyes could pick out his shaking hands that he tried so desperately to hold still. Feeling my heart becoming heavy with his sadness I slowly moved my arm, letting it brush against his. A shock was sent through us as I entwined my fingers with his and he accepted. I could feel the pain in his touch as it tightened on mine. Almost like he was holding on to the last piece of life he had left. We shouldn’t have come here. I was wrong in making Harry do this. The slight breeze blew around us and small bumps pricked up on my arms. It was cold today. The last time we were here the trees had had delicate trails of light beating through the gaps in between the leaves. Pink flowers along the overgrown grass looked dishevelled and broken now. Their pastel petals shrivelling up from the ghostly wind. Suddenly I felt Harry’s arm wrap around my hips as he pulled me against his body protectively. Soft plump lips kissing the top of my head with a desperate longing. He ran his hand down my back managing to hold me to him even more. My head rested on his chest, the faint beat of his heart pouring out into me. A shiver ran down my spine.
A cold wet drip trickled down my cheek and when I gazed up I saw his green eyes glassy with tears.
“Harry…we will come back.” I choked out quietly and he kept still. The only movement was the water hanging onto his tear ducts. Turning my head a little small strands of my hair were blown in front of my face. The grey stone slung at an angle was staring straight back at me. An image of Harry sleeping in front of it crept into my mind. Small tears now threatening me and I quickly tried to shake the thought from my head.
“I promised them I would never leave. I can’t leave them. They are my parents.”
“And we aren’t leaving them Harry. You wanted to do this Harry…” His body shifted so that he was facing me. I looked up at him and felt the rough touch of his palms caress my cheeks. Leaning down the warmth of his lips spread through me like fire and I automatically wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him in for more. His hands felt their way down my sides as we kept kissing desperately. Why did it feel so sad? Was it because of everything we had been through? And now we were leaving Tanya and Donny.
Donny.
The person I had spent most of my teenage years with. The only thing I ever wished was for him to leave but now…after all that’s happened. I’m not sure if I could run away from anyone. I was tired of people going.
“What are you thinking?” Harry’s velvety voice invaded my thoughts. His touch still holding me against the warmth of his body. I could hear the slight skip of his heartbeat, underneath where my head was resting.
“Are you sure we should be doing this?” I spoke quietly, afraid the wind might blow it away if I was too loud. Harry’s response was quicker than I could have ever imagined.
“He tried to rape you Sam.” The green in his eyes was burning deep into mine. I couldn’t bear to see him so angry and upset. Reaching up I ran my fingers through his thick curls and felt him relax slightly against me.
“Okay let’s go.” My voice was barely audible but Harry took it as a sign. Entwining our hands once more we walked away from the overgrown opening. Looking back I saw the thick, grey stone. It was now slumping even further at an angle, its engraved lettering becoming hidden under the creeping moss. The pink flower petals were browning around it and I knew right then. That this could’ve been the last time we would come here.
-------------
I waited in the van as the music from the radio drifted on in the background. My eyes could pick Harry out easily, he was stood in line waiting for the cashier so he could pay for gas. Placing my legs up on the dashboard I tapped my fingers on my knees to the rhythm of the song and smiled to myself behind fallen strands of hair.
Me and Harry were running away together. Of course I shouldn’t be smiling about that, if my mother was here now I could imagine her giving me the talk about how boys ruin everything and I would get pregnant within a month of being with one. That brings me to Harry’s want. It was only a couple of days ago when he hinted about having a family with me.
My fingers stopped moving and I noticed my chipped painted nails. The purple polish cracking around the edges. A few cuts lay here and there along my hands, their presence trying to heal but they were finding it difficult from my lack of health. Looking back up at Harry through the window I saw him making his way back towards me in the van. He held some food and his wallet and keys in the other.
I caught his small wink before he pulled the car door open and slid in next to me. Automatically I leaned towards him and placed my lips against his warm ones gently. A smile spread onto his face before he pulled me a little closer and kissed me again. “We really should get moving, unless you want to sleep in the van tonight.” Harry said against my mouth and I found myself retreating back into my seat. “Seatbelt.” He ordered to me and I strapped it across my body.
“I know what a seatbelt is.” I said back to him and he raised an eyebrow slowly before entwining his hand with my own.
“I’m just making sure you don’t get hurt again Sam. I can’t stand it anymore. Thinking back to everything that has happened…” Watching him carefully I stroked my thumb against the back of his and tried to make my gesture as reassuring as I could.
“It’s me and you now.” My lips spoke to him and he let go of my hand before placing them on the steering wheel and backing up out of the parking lot.
I couldn’t tell whether he was angry at me or whether he was just angry with himself. We’d already been through this before, nothing was going to happen again. Although Tanya kept creeping into my mind and her baby…left with Donny and who knows who else.
“The guy at the counter told me a small place we could stay in for the night.” Harry said as we drove along the motorway. My eyes glanced towards the fast moving trees as we made our way past them. A blur of greens disappearing behind us. Along with everything else.
-------------
Placing the last biscuit in my mouth, the world around us had started to get dark. The sky was turning a deep purple as the dark blanket was threatening to cover it. Harry’s eyes were fixed on the road, his messy curls hanging over his forehead as he kept pushing them back with frustration.
“He said it was around here.” His voice said angrily before he relaxed under my touch. Running my fingers along his arm he stopped tensing and I felt him become a little more lose.
“Harry I’m sure we will be there soon. Maybe you should take a break.”
“No. We have to get you inside.” I looked at him my mouth slightly agape from what he had just said.
“Harry this is about staying the night somewhere, not about getting me inside.”
“I can’t let anything happen; I can’t let anything happen to you.” My heart beat raised a little and I ran through the ways in which to calm him down through my head. Nothing was coming up.
“Harry please, stop driving.” I almost begged him but his grip on the wheel tightened. The veins in his arms protruded a little from the stress and I felt the van gaining speed. Darkness was around us now, the car had no sense of light at all, only the small flash as another car on the motorway passed.
“Harry!” I shouted at him, but he merely carried on pushing his foot down on the pedal.
“I need to get you there Sam.” Without thinking I unbuckled my seatbelt and grabbed the wheel. Both my hands swerved it to the right and we moved off of the road, skidding to a halt when Harry braked as hard as he could. Everything in the back of the van, fell against one wall and a few smashes were heard. My breathing came out raggedly before I took Harry’s face in my hands. He looked at me with rage on his expression. I knew I shouldn’t have done that. But I was scared he was going to crash us.
“What were you thinking?!” He exploded before pulling me into his arm tightly.
“I was scared.” I barely whispered and his hand found its way into my knotty hair. “You were going to crash, you lost it Harry.”
His chest calmed down from its fast rising up and down pattern. “I scared you?” His words were barely audible and I sat back a little so I could look at him. The warmth of his hand cupped my face lightly and his expression changed from angry to worry.
“I was just nervous Harry I didn’t know what you were doing…” Looking down away from his gaze he pulled my face back to his. I couldn’t help but tear up when I saw him looking the way he did. His eyes reddening from fatigue, his lips were dry and becoming pale. The dark circles under his waterline were purpling like bruises. “Oh Harry, what’s happening?”
He shook his head and wrapped his arms around me, his hands finding their way onto the bare skin of my back, beneath my sweater. We stayed like this for a while. Watching the cars plummet like bullets past us. The cold air of the van now becoming threatening. We needed to get moving before both of us froze to death by the side of the road. Unfortunately I couldn’t drive even if I wanted to. So it was up to Harry to get us going. Guilt washed over me as I sat back in my seat and watched him start up the ignition. Somehow he looked even worse.
“Harry.” His name came out my lips full of concern and I entwined my hand with his at it shook a little. He was shaking all over. Leaning back over the seat I rummaged around, in hopes of finding a jacket or even a blanket. But there was nothing to be found in the darkness of the van.
“I’m fine Sam really.” He smiled to me but I knew it was only pretend. I couldn’t bear to see him like this. Imagining back to how he had to wash me in the bath and help me to get dressed, I suddenly felt his pain. Harry was losing himself…
----------
A bricked building with plants twisting up around the sides stood before us. The vans headlights illuminated the glass windows and a sign saying “Bed and Breakfast Hotel” was peering back at us.
“This must be it.” His velvet voice returned and I ran my hand through his curls slowly. I needed to get him in bed as soon as possible.
Opening the door I jumped out and ran around to the driver’s side. Harry was already out though and was making his way to the back of the van. I watched him slide the heavy metal door to the side as he grabbed a few bags of our stuff and I did the same. Of course we were only staying for the night but who knows what we might need. We were alone now, no one to come to the rescue if we needed anything. Suddenly I wished I was still a little girl, sat watching cartoons in the morning.
I gasped for air and dropped everything as my legs quacked beneath me.
“Sam!” Harry shouted when I felt his arms holding me up against him. My feet slipping on the stone covered ground.
“Bell! Bell, we left Bell! Harry!”
“Shhh calm down Sam.” I noise left my mouth when I pictured her blonde curls and bright green eyes. She has no idea we have just gone. I didn’t even get to say goodbye. My only piece of family left and now I’ve left that behind too.
“Harry we have to go back.” I tried to run out of his arms to the van but he had cleverly hooked his arms around me so I couldn’t run.
“She’s safer there Sam. No one will get her there, out here we are going to find it hard and I know you wouldn’t want her to go through this.” My breathing gradually returned back to normal and I ran my shaking hands through my hair. Nodding to him before wiping my eyes and picking up the dropped bags.
I felt his lips brushing my forehead and I stood still, my eye lids fluttering shut a little as the breeze blew around us.
“Come on, we both need to sleep.” Harry said gently, his hold never leaving my back as he guided me up the stoned steps. I heard the click of the keys and the flash of the vans lights, assuring me our belongings were safe. There were only a few cars in the small parking lot. This made relief pass through me. Hardly anyone would see how drastic my appearance would be right now.
Entering through the door a small bell chimed, and I felt myself becoming unstable again.
Bell. My sister.
Harry guided me to the side of the warmly lit lobby and cupped my cheeks gently. Stroking his thumb along my cheek bones. “Sam I promise you everything is going to be alright. She’s okay back home. She’s better there.”
“I left her Harry…my sister.” His hands travelled down my arms and he held my hands gently, helping me to sit down on one of the plush red arm chairs. As soon as I touched the comfort my whole body slipped away and I finally felt calm. Harry is right, it’s safer for her where I am not.
Harry’s lips brushed my head once more before I watched him walk over to the counter. A small woman with brown hair pushed back into a bun served him. Her face seemed to turn to disgust when she saw me sat on her piece of furniture. My bruised and dirty body ruining its perfection. She turned back to Harry and gave him a look of annoyance when he brought out a few notes of cash. My head fell onto the side of the chair and I knew we wouldn’t be able to afford staying here tonight. It may be in the middle of nowhere, but obviously there was a reason why only a few people stayed here. They could actually afford it.
Raising my head as Harry walked back over I picked up some bags and nodded in his direction. “I couldn’t afford a room with a double bed, or a room with two beds. Luckily I could get us a room with one bed.” His smile returned proudly and I wrapped my arms around him with relief. One bed would be fine for me and Harry. We sleep that close together anyway.
“Let’s hope they don’t have any bottles in this room.” Harry said cheekily before winking down at me.
