Midnight Memories
Are You Okay?
The roar of the crowd was deafening, the lights blinding, the thumping of the bass through the speakers vibrating through my whole body. The atmosphere throughout the whole stadium was incredible. I couldn’t focus on anything but the stage and the 5 boys walking out into the middle. Everything around me was suddenly irrelevant and the only thing that mattered was the people standing out on that stage in front of me. A tugging on my arm broke me from my trance; bringing me back into the real world. I turned to my left to see Evie smiling up at me, pure joy and excitement showing in her eyes, her smile, every feature.
“IT’S THEM MADS! IT’S THEM! THEY’RE ACTUALLY RIGHT THERE IN FRONT OF US!” she screamed, struggling to make her voice heard over the roar of the crowd. My whole body was shaking, my legs feeling like jelly again, struggling to stand. My mouth failed to produce any words in response, just a painful sounding squeal.
Suddenly the music started and the intro to ‘live while we’re young’ travelled around the arena, the deafening roar of the crowd becoming even louder than it was before.
We were almost half way through the concert when the boys stepped onto a platform which began to rise up from the ground, lifting them into the air.
“OH MY GOD MADS THEY’RE GOING TO THE CENTRE STAGE!!!” Evie squealed whilst throwing her arms into the air, closely missing the face of the girl sitting next to her.
“Dude, calm down, they’re going to the centre stage not your bed” I replied calmly, trying not to show that I was actually feeling exactly the same way.
“Oh god… if only” Evie sighed, sitting down and looking disappointed for a small moment before leaping again to her feet and screaming.
Although it wasn’t like they were standing next to us, the centre stage was actually quite close and so we would have a great view of them. The platform which they stood on slowly rose up above the audience and began its journey across to the centre stage. As they travelled across the boys began to joke and chat with each other, talking to the audience. Once they had landed on the stage, Teenage Kicks began to play causing yet more uproar from the audience. They were so close that we could almost reach out and touch them. As the song came to a close the hundreds of teenage girls surrounding us squealed and screeched at the boys, failing in their efforts to get noticed by the ones they loved so very much.
Once back on the stage, the boys again began joking and talking to the audience, (well as best as they could over the screams).
“OH GOD MADS THEY ARE SO AMAZING!! MADS… MADDY!!” Evie yelled waving her hands in front of my face in an attempt to bring me back from wherever my mind was.
“Oh… Sorry Evie… yeah I know they’re amazing they’re perfect… I don’t feel too good…” I stuttered out my words, not fully concentrating on what I was saying but concentrating more on the blur of the stage. My head was spinning and my legs almost gave out underneath me.
“Evie I think I’m going to pop to the toilet, I just need to breathe for a minute” I smiled my best fake smile to Evie in an attempt to convince her I was okay.
“Oh, okay well I’ll come wi…”
“No, no it’s fine you stay here and enjoy the loves of your life” I cut her off, smiling sweetly as I made my way along the row of seats and into the isle.
Stumbling down the steps I headed towards the toilet and crashed through the door. My perception of reality was severely altered as my eyes struggled to focus on anything. Splashing water in my face didn’t seem to help either so I planned to find a way out of the stadium. Upon leaving the bathroom I could hear the boys singing their last song and drawing the concert to a close. I spotted an emergency exit and decided that was my best way out of here. Fumbling at the door handle I tumbled out into the dark alleyway at the back of the stadium. I stopped, trying to regain my stability without success. I leant against the cold stone wall and closed my eyes, thanking the sky for a few light drops of rain, cooling off my skin. God knows how long went by as I stood there, taking deep breaths, listening to the sound of the light rain pattering onto the cars parked around. I blessed the quiet, allowing me to clear my head and relax a little bit, the sound of the rain quite therapeutic and very calming.
“Um… are you okay?” my blessed quiet was shattered by an oddly familiar Irish accent.
I glanced to my left, struggling to make out who the stranger was whose voice had smashed its way into my head, destroying my lovely rain. Attempting to make my eyes focus was proving to be a much harder task than I had expected. The stranger continued to watch me, I assumed, waiting for my answer to his question which my mouth had not managed to conceive of yet. I realised I was probably staring and possibly seemed like a complete weirdo right now, but I had to stare to try and focus my eyes. The blurry stranger moved towards me suddenly, causing me to stumble backwards. My hands desperately reached out to the wall, scrabbling to find something to hold onto. More voices travelled towards me, such loud voices, and so much noise. All I wanted was my blissful quiet back again and before long my prayers were answered and the quiet began to return. The voices around me slowly fading until all I could hear were the raindrops on the cars. My mind relaxed, hearing the familiar sound, and it seemed my body relaxed too as before I knew it I was on the ground. Eventually even my peaceful raindrops had faded and my vision was black. I knew that couldn’t be a good sign but I found myself glad that at least it was finally quiet.
