Midnight Memories
Welsh is a language?
“Mads… Maddie… Madelyn!” Evie screamed at me, though I was lost in thought staring out of the train window.
“Sorry what?” I replied calmly, removing my headphones, which were currently blasting out One Direction’s ‘Kiss you’.
“Will you watch my bag please?” Evie asked, “I’m just going to the toilet”.
“Yeah sure, whatever. Wait you’re going to the toilet again? Seriously this is like the fifth time in the last 2 hours Evie, what is wrong with you?!”
“Just shut up and watch my bag bitch!”
“Fine bitch!” I giggled back at Evie. That girl was crazy but I loved her to bits. I turned back to the window replacing my headphones and pushing my blonde hair out of my face ready to again get lost in my daydreams.
I and Evie Richardson had been best friends since I could remember. Our parents were really good friends and so we’d been around each other a lot since we were born. We pretty much do absolutely everything together and we’re basically inseparable. We both love all the same things and that’s what I love about her, we had so much in common. Another thing that we have in common and had been a part of our lives for a long time was One Direction. It could definitely be classed as an obsession and I admit our lives pretty much revolve around our love for those boys. But we weren’t crazy! Oh no, we were just… enthusiastic.
“Oh my gosh Mads, I almost just died!” Evie squealed as she stumbled back to her seat
“Nearly died… why what happened?”
“I walked into the toilet and I didn’t know how to shut the door so I was looking around and I saw a door button. So I pressed it and the door just like slammed in my face and I fell backwards, tripped over the toilet and knocked all the loo roll over!”
“I was wondering why you were taking so long…”
“Omg Mads it was so embarrassing!” Evie cringed, “An old lady asked me if I was okay when I walked out! It was so awkward!”
“Evie… You are actually an idiot”
“Thanks Mads. I love you too darling”
“Oh you know you do!”
Evie continued to laugh and banter about funny memories from when we were back in school and how the woman next to us was eating whole raw carrots and other such hilarious conversation that you can have on a train. We were travelling from Bristol to Cardiff to see One Direction tonight and our excitement was literally uncontrollable. It was going to be an amazing night and I could not wait!
“What does that sign day?” Evie asked, creasing her brow in thought.
“It says Casnewydd, its Newport in welsh… It literally says Newport right above it”
“In Welsh? Welsh is a language?”
“Oh my god Evie… are you really that stupid? Of course it’s a language you fool!”
“Well you learn something new every day!”
We spent the last few minutes of our journey in fits of laughter about how neither of us could pronounce the Welsh words or even manage a remotely Welsh sounding accent. When we finally pulled up at the station we picked up our bags and hopped off the train, wandering around for a few moments trying to work out which way we had to go to get out of the station. We don’t go to Cardiff a lot so we don’t really know where the hell we’re going most of the time. We’d probably get lost at some point today, it was inevitable really.
“Are there any toilets here?” Evie asked, looking around at the signs in the station.
“Are you kidding me? You actually need to go to the toilet again? I would consider booking a doctor’s appointment if I were you”
“Shut up Mads! I can’t see any toilets anyway; I’ll just have to hold it in”
We finally found our way out of the station, just stopping for a moment to get our bearings and work out which way we actually had to go.
“It’s this way I promise!” Evie pointed to the street on the right.
“Okay girl, whatever you say. I’ll just follow you and if we get lost I blame you!”
“Can we go find a toilet? Oh look there’s John Lewis over there! We can go in there”
“Yeah okay, can’t just ignore your messed up bladder can we!”
I waited outside the bathrooms in John Lewis while Evie went to the toilet. I stopped to look in the mirror, admiring my outfit. I think I’d made a good choice today. I was wearing black leather shorts with a lace trim, a beige knitted jumper with a black leather jacket on top and black pumps. I looked up to my hair and began fussing over it to get it to look a bit better. I did have naturally blonde hair but I’d highlighted it a while ago and hadn’t bothered to re-dye it so my roots were starting to show. I brushed my hand back through my hair, pulling it over into a side part. I changed it a few times from a side parting back to my usual middle part to see which I preferred. I settled on a side part, letting my long blonde curls drop over my shoulders. Why not mix it up a little. I was still staring at myself in the mirror when Evie strolled up behind me.
“You really can’t stop looking at yourself can you Mads”
“Shut up Evie I was sorting out my hair!”
“Yeah of course you were honey… Don’t worry I know how much you like to stare at that pretty face of yours!” Evie teased as she began fussing with her hair in the mirror, pushing her long black curls over her shoulders and checking her outfit looked okay. She’d decided on a much more basic outfit than mine, wearing black jeans, blue vans, a 1D t-shirt which she’d bought the last time she went to see them and a leather jacket. She finished smoothing her hair and adjusting outfit and we set off to attempt to find our way to the arena.
We stopped outside the arena about 10 minutes later when we finally found it. I know now not to listen to Evie when she says she knows where she’s going. She clearly had no idea at all. We decided that we didn’t really need to be there yet as we still had 3 hours until we could go in, so we agreed we were confident that we could find it again and headed back towards the shops to see if we could find a Starbucks.
“There it is! I found Starbucks!” Evie squealed in excitement, jumping in the air.
“Wow Evie, calm down. It’s just Starbucks, it’s not like you just spotted One Direction”
“If I did… I would die!”
“Well then let’s hope we don’t spot them!”
We waited in the queue in Starbucks, trying to decide what we were going to drink. Evie decided on a caramel cream frappuccino and I decided on my usual, which I got every time I went to Starbucks, a strawberry and cream frappuccino. We settled down on the sofas to drink our drinks and chat about the concert.
“Oh my god Mads, we’re going to be seeing 1D soon! I am so excited!!”
“Ahhh me too! It’s going to be amazing!” I screamed, a little too loud, causing other customers to look around to see what was going on.
We sat there for about an hour and a half drinking and talking. A little while was spent giggling about how cute the guy serving us was and moaning about how we always see pictures on tumblr of peoples cups with compliments written on them and how that never happens to us.
After we’d finished our drinks and Evie had gone to the toilet yet again, we decided we’d stroll back round to the arena and start queuing, even though it didn’t matter as the concert was seated. Before we started the queue we went in and bought a bit of 1D merch. I bought a Take Me Home t-shirt and Evie bought a Last first Kiss shirt and a 1D flag. We walked back round to the queue line where there was still no one in the queue and decided we’d be the ones to start the trend. After about 10 minutes of sitting on the floor at the front of the queue, people started to line up behind us.
“We started a trend!” Evie whispered to me, giggling.
“Oh my! Everyone is just like… those girls look cool, we should copy them! We’re trend setters’ baby!” I shouted, jumping up onto my feet, waving and bowing to people around us. “Thank you everyone, we love you all!”
I’d never been a quiet or shy person and I loved to be dramatic. People around us started to giggle at my little display and it seemed I’d attracted some attention.
“Hi girls! We’re from Capital FM, we were wondering if you’d like your picture taken to be on our website?” A kind woman in a Capital FM jacket smiled at us, holding up her camera.
“Oh my Evie! We’re going to be famous!” I squealed in the most dramatic way I possibly could.
We leaned in together and smiled into the camera. A couple of photos were taken, the woman thanked us and told us to enjoy the show and carried on her way along the queue, taking pictures for the website. She was followed by a group of men giving away free bars of Galaxy chocolate and a woman giving away bracelets. We got quite a lot of free stuff that day; waiting in queues can be fun.
We must have sat on the floor for 2 hours before it was finally time to go in. I could barely stand from sitting for so long. Evie took my hands and pulled me up; helping me to stand on my legs which I feared had turned to jelly. A security guard finally came out through the doors and asked us all to move back so that they could move the barriers out of our way.
“Right everyone, you can’t go in quite yet, but when we say you can, please no charging up the steps as we don’t want anyone to get hurt” he announced to the crowd of eager looking teenage girls and not so eager looking parents. When they finally decided it was time to let us in, Evie grabbed my arm and squealed. We stumbled up the steps, trying to look like we weren’t running. We gave our bags over to be searched and as food and drinks aren’t allowed to be brought in with you, they took away my bottle of water and Wispa chocolate bar. We then continued to get our tickets scanned and hurried into the arena.
“Right Evie, what seat are you?” I asked.
“ummm… Block 7, row K, seat 7”
“Okay so I’m seat 8 then!”
We found our seats quite easily and we still had a while until the support acts started so we decided to pay another visit to the toilets. Evie and her bladder again. We took the opportunity to sort out our hair and make sure we were looking okay and then headed back to our seats.
We sat there waiting for what seemed like forever, chatting about how excited we were until the first support act came on stage. Camryn was her name. We cheered and clapped along and then continued chatting after she left. The next support act who we already knew of came onto stage, we cheered a bit more for them as we already liked them. They were a cute Australian boy band called 5 Seconds of Summer. After they’d finished performing we started to get more excited as we knew that One direction would be up next. A girl sat next to us who we discovered was on her own as she hadn’t got tickets at the same time as her friends. Her name was Lily and she was sweet so we chatted to her for a bit while we were waiting. We were busy discussing how much we loved each member of 1D in turn, going into great detail of our love for each one when the lights dimmed and the whole arena leapt to their feet, a deafening roar filling the stadium.
“MADS IT’S TIME!!” Evie screamed at the top of her lungs, clutching my arm and jumping up and down.
