Summer Love

eight.

After slipping on her white and hot pink bikini, Mae pulled her hair up into a messy bun and walked out of her room, grabbing her beach towel on the way out. She padded down the stairs quickly, knowing that Doniya was already out on the beach, and Mae didn’t want her to wait any longer, especially since she felt like she kind of blew Doniya off when she went out with Niall yesterday.

Once Mae bid her parents goodbye, she walked outside and rushed down the porch stairs towards the hot, golden sand where she saw Doniya lying out, her hair pulled up in a messy bun, identical to Mae’s, and her sunglasses on.

Mae plopped down besides Doniya, causing her to jump. “Sorry, I’m late.”

“It’s okay,” Doniya said as she sat up. “You’re only late by a couple minutes. I haven’t been out here long.”

“Good,” Mae said, heaving sigh. “So, what did you do yesterday night?”

“While you went out with Niall,” she said, glaring at Mae. “I played video games with Louis and Harry…sadly.”

“That sounds…fun.”

“Shut up,” Doniya said as she and Mae lied on their backs. Doniya turned her head to look at Mae. “Tell me about the date.”

“What do you want to know?” Mae asked, already feeling her cheeks heat up as flashbacks of the date re-played in her memory.

Shrugging, Doniya looked away from Mae and towards the sun, making sure she would get an even tan. “How was Niall? Do you like him?”

“He was really funny, polite, nice, cute…” Mae said, a small smile forming on her lips. “And yeah, I like him. Is it bad if I say I like him a lot?”

“No, you don’t,” Doniya gasped, laughing loudly. “You really like Niall? That much?”

Mae shrugged, her smile growing wider. “Yeah…he’s really fun to hang out with. He’s having dinner with my family tonight. I just hope my mom makes enough because he ate like crazy yesterday.”

“He tends to do that,” she chuckled. “I’m glad you two like each other, though. He is nice, and summer flings are always fun.”

Mae felt her stomach sink once Doniya finished her sentence, because she didn’t even think about what would happen to her and Niall at the end of the summer. They still had a little less than three months left of summer, and Mae wasn’t even sure if they would last until next week. But she looked past the negatives and wondered what would happen if they were still seeing each other by the end of the summer, and thinking about not seeing him ever again broke a piece of her heart.

After Mae didn’t reply, Doniya glanced over at her. “What’s wrong?”

Mae shook her head, acting as if she didn’t think anything of what Doniya said ten seconds ago. “Nothing, I’m just really hot. Let’s go in the water.”

“So, are you going to ask her out?” Louis asked as he watched Niall get ready in the bathroom. “I mean, you’re already going to eat dinner at her house and meet her mum and dad.”

“Asking her out right now is just way too forward, don’t you think?” Niall responded as he stared at his reflection in the mirror while fixing the collar of his black polo. He did like Mae enough to ask her out, but he wasn’t sure how she felt about it, and he never asked a girl out this early. He felt that the relationships where the two involved didn’t take enough time to get to know each other never worked out, and he didn’t want his and Mae’s relationship to end up like that because what he felt for her was surprisingly strong already, and he didn’t want to have to let that feeling go so soon.

“We’re only going to be here for the summer, Niall,” Louis reminded him for the third time since the conversation began ten minutes ago. “You don’t have all the time in the world, you know.”

“I know, Louis. I know,” he said, his tone getting a slight edge to it. “But I don’t want to just ask her out just because we don’t have much time together. We have three months still. Maybe after another date I’ll ask her out.”

“Have you even kissed the girl, yet?” Louis prodded. “You didn’t tell me much of anything last night; you went to bed so early.”

“I gave her a peck on the cheek,” Niall sighed. “We’ll see about an actual kiss tonight. You know I don’t rush into all that.”

Rolling his eyes, Louis flopped down on Harry’s bed. “Okay. Are you nervous about meeting her parents?”

“I think parents usually take a liking to me, so I’m not all that worried,” he stated as he finished fixing his hair. He turned off the bathroom light and walked towards Louis. He sat down on the bed and pulled on his shoes. “I’m just worried that they’re going to think that me being from so far away is just idiotic on mine and Mae’s part. I feel like they’re going to wonder why we’re even attempting to invest our time, energy, and feelings into a ‘fling’.”

“I don’t think they would offer for you to come for dinner if they thought you were both idiotic,” Louis stated.

Niall shrugged as he looked down at his feet and sighed. He didn’t think that he would find someone on this trip that he took such an interest in, and he wasn’t sure if he was happy about it or not, considering in three months he would have to separate from Mae. He knew it would be difficult, especially since they would be hopefully spending every day together until the end of the summer, and then when they wouldn’t see each other for months, maybe even years, things would be hard and really different. Yes, there was Skype and Facebook and Twitter, but social networking sites wouldn’t make it the same. Niall wouldn’t be able to hug Mae, or kiss her, or even hold her hand. The closest he would be able to get would be seeing her face on Skype, but being that far away from each other would cause problems for their relationship, and he knew that.

“It’ll be okay, Niall,” Louis said. He could tell his friend had a few things on his mind, and he felt bad for him. “Everything will be okay and you two have plenty of time together still. Don’t let the future upset you. And you never know, you two could be far apart and still have a successful relationship.”

“Maybe,” Niall said, heaving a sigh. “I just feel stupid for even thinking about all of those things right now. We aren’t even officially together and we have only been on one date.”

“I think it’s good, because you’ve forgotten about Steph,” Louis commented. “Do you miss her?”

“Not really,” Niall replied honestly. He hadn’t spoken to Steph for a few weeks now and he kind of liked it that way. It allowed him to continue to forget about her, the relationship they had, and the pain she had caused him when she broke it off before he left for the summer. She had messaged him on Facebook three days ago while he was lying in bed, but he never messaged her back because he felt no need to speak to her when she was the one that ended their relationship. He was talking to Mae now, and he didn’t want to screw anything up by speaking to Steph.

“It’s 6:20,” Louis informed Niall, breaking him out of his thoughts. “Better get going, champ.”

Niall smiled to himself as he pushed himself off the bed, and after he said goodbye to his friend, he walked out of the bedroom, down the stairs, and out the front door towards Mae’s rental house.
