Summer Love

four.

That afternoon, Mae was in her room debating on which bathing suit to wear to lie out in the sun. She looked from her cheetah print bikini to her white and hot pink bikini, before looking back at her cheetah one and deciding that that was the one she was going to wear for today. She peeled off her pajamas that she hadn’t changed out of yet, and once she had her swimsuit and a pair of jean shorts on, she slipped on her flip flops and walked out of her room.

As she padded down the stairs she heard her mom gathering her purse and wallet from where they sat on the counter, and once Mae walked into the kitchen she looked at her mom. “You guys leaving already?”

“Yes,” LeeAnn responded as she looked over at her daughter while in the process of stuffing her purse with her belongings that she would need for the evening. “We’re going to go catch a movie really quick before we do everything else. Where’s Doniya?”

“She’s going out with her sister today, so I’m just going to lie out by the beach for a while,” Mae sighed as she grabbed her beach towel from where it hung over the kitchen chair. “I need some sun.”

“Well, make sure you don’t lock yourself out and we’ll be back later tonight,” LeeAnn smiled as she walked towards the front door. “Bye, sweetie.”

Mae waved to her mother before she headed towards the backdoor and walked outside. She smiled to herself as she felt the warm sun come in contact with her body and sighed to herself, before she walked down the porch stairs and headed towards the golden sand that she couldn’t wait to sink her toes into. Once she got down to the sand, she found an open spot to lay out her towel and plopped down on it. She pulled out her Ipod that she had in the pocket of her jean shorts before putting it on shuffle, sticking her headphones in her ears, and closing her eyes as she relaxed in the Florida sun.

“I can’t believe you did that!” Harry shouted at Louis as they played their video game, while Zayn, Liam, and Niall watched; well, Zayn and Liam watched while Niall looked out the window to see if Mae would ever come out of the house so he could go talk to her. Sadly, he had been sitting on the chair by the window all morning and afternoon hoping she would come outside, as creepy as it was for him to do. He didn’t know why he was dying to see her and talk to her, and he didn’t mention her to any of the guys because he knew they would just laugh at him being so into her after only seeing her one time.

“Bye, guys,” Doniya said, breaking all of the guys away from the TV (and Niall away from the window). “Waliya and I are going shopping.”

“Is that one girl going with you?” Zayn asked curiously as he glanced over at his sister. Niall watched Doniya closely, knowing that ‘that one girl’ was Mae, and he hoped to God that Mae wasn’t going with them.

“No,” Doniya replied with a sigh. “Waliya wants it to just be a sister thing, sadly.”

“Well, have fun,” Zayn mumbled as he, and the rest of the guys, turned their attention back to the TV. Doniya rolled her eyes as she pulled on her shoes. She looked over at Niall and waved to him, and he waved back to her before he glanced back out the window to see what he had been waiting for: Mae walking down the porch stairs of the rental house and towards the sand. He quickly rose up from where he had been planted in the chair for the last hour and a half before walking past the guys and going up the stairs towards his room.

He walked over to his suitcase that still wasn’t unpacked before pulling out a pair of his swim trunks and throwing them on. He took off his shirt and after he grabbed a t-shirt that he wouldn’t mind getting wet he left his bedroom and made his way back downstairs to see Liam looking at him.

“Where are you going?” he asked curiously as Niall walked by the guys once again and put his hand on the doorknob.

“I’m going out by the beach,” Niall replied as he opened the door. “I’m kind of bored in here.”

“If you say so,” he sighed, before he turned his attention back to Harry and Louis’ game. Niall turned on his heel and walked out the backdoor and instantly squinted as the sun hit him directly in the face. He walked down the porch stairs and headed towards the sand where he saw Mae now lying out. As sad as it was, he had butterflies in his stomach as he got closer to her and he wasn’t quite sure what he was going to say once he approached her, but he didn’t wait all day just to watch her from afar like some stalker.

Once he was a few feet away from Mae, he saw that she had her eyes shut as she listened to her Ipod. She was wearing a cheetah printed bikini, that completely complimented her body (or so Niall thought), and her hair was up in a messy bun on the top of her head, and Niall always liked when a girl’s hair wasn’t styled perfectly and was a slight mess. When he was finally close enough to touch her he sat down next to where she was lying and tapped her arm.

As Mae felt someone lightly tap her arm she opened her eyes to see Niall looking down at her and she quickly sat up, as if it were an uncontrollable reflex. She looked him up and down to see that he was dressed in a pair of green swim trunks and a faded, light blue t-shirt that looked like it had a few years on it. She pulled out her headphones and turned off her Ipod before she turned towards him slightly, butterflies filling her gut.

“Hi,” Niall said with that same crooked-tooth smile that Mae noticed the first time he smiled at her. “Sorry if I startled you. I’m Niall, if you forgot.”

“No, it’s okay,” Mae said with a small smile that caused Niall’s smile to grow even wider. “I just wasn’t expecting you to come see me today.”

“I had nothing else to do,” Niall said with a small shrug, wondering if Mae had been thinking about him as much as he had been about her. “The guys are playing games in the house and I kind of just wanted to come out here, and I saw you were out, so…”

Mae just nodded as she let out a quiet giggle, and Niall then realized how creepy he sounded at that moment, before looking at her. “Not to creep you out.”

“No, that’s fine,” she replied, her smile growing. “At least I have someone to talk to; I’ve been kind of bored all day since Doniya is out and whatnot.”

“Yeah,” he trailed off. There was silence between the two of them for about 30 seconds, before Mae looked over at him.

“Have you and your friends gone out and done anything around the area yet?” she asked, her tone full of curiosity.

“Not really,” he sighed. “They’ve just been playing video games and going into the ocean.”

“There’s some fun mini-golf places and arcades around,” Mae informed him. “And some cute shops located downtown.”

“That sounds fun,” Niall nodded. He studied Mae’s face to see if she was creeped out by him or happy that he was talking to her, and after seeing that she seemed okay with the fact that he randomly showed up next to her, he decided to make his next move. “Do you want to go do some of that tomorrow?”

“Like shopping?” Mae wondered as if to clarify what Niall asked her to do.

“Sure,” he chuckled. “I don’t mind it. And we can golf or something else; if I wanted to sit around and play video games I would’ve just stayed home, right?”

Nodding in agreement, Mae looked down at her knotted fingers that were in her lap, and she couldn’t help but smile at the thought of her and Niall going downtown together for the day. No, she didn’t know him at all, but it would be nice to have another friend for the summer, even if they had nothing more than a friendship. He was cute, seemed polite and nice, and acted like he wanted to talk to her, so she didn’t see the problem with going out with him for the day. Yes, she would keep her phone close in case something happened, but she had a feeling that Niall wasn’t that type of guy; he wasn’t overly flirtatious or hitting on her, and she hadn’t even caught him looking her up and down or staring at her chest like other guys would have. And the fact that he knew she was out by the beach and wanted to come talk to her and sit with her made her smile.

And as she thought about those things, she couldn’t think of a reason not to want to go out with him.
