Summer Love

twenty.

The last two weeks of summer had flown by, and out of nowhere the day before the last day of summer had arrived, which was a day Niall and Mae were both dreading. Over the past two weeks they had seen each other every day and spent nearly every hour that wasn’t devoted to sleep together. Ever since they had the talk about Steph, they had been inseparable and Mae loved it more than anything. He had dinner with her family nearly every night, and when he didn’t, Mae had dinner with him and the Malik’s with the rest of the guys. They would lie out by the beach together, go downtown together, go to an arcade, or do something exciting nearly every day to spend their last days of summer together.

The plan for the last night of the summer was for Mae, Niall, Doniya, and the rest of the guys to have a bonfire on the beach and spend the last night together as a group. Mae knew she was going to miss Doniya and the rest of the guys more than anything, and this summer was definitely an experience she would never forget. Awkwardly coming across a friend for the summer was the one of the best things that happened to Mae, because it gave her multiple new relationships and a great relationship with one of the nicest guys she had ever met, aside from the time she had spent apart from him.

“So,” Zayn smiled as he held a marshmallow over the fire. “What was your guys’ favorite memory of this summer? Everyone say theirs.

“Mine was probably going to Disney,” Harry responded as he leaned back in his chair and put his hands behind his head. He looked around at all of his friends. “That was an awesome experience with no adults and just being with your best friends.”

“Agreed,” Doniya nodded, before she smiled and looked over at Mae. “My favorite memory was meeting Mae on one of the first days, because without her I’m sure I would’ve gone insane. I was already going crazy the first day with all of that testosterone in the house.”

“You have your sisters,” Harry commented. “They’re not men.”

“But I can’t go out and do girl things with them that I would enjoy to do,” Doniya retorted. “I can’t really share my secrets with them in case they get mad at me and tell on me.”

“Well,” Louis chuckled, unsure of what to say. “I think my favorite memory was spending every day with my best friends and being able to get a new friend,” he looked over at Mae and smiled just like Doniya had seconds ago. “It was nice getting close to Mae and learning what the American people are like.”

Mae rolled her eyes and laughed to herself. “Thanks, Louis.”

He nodded his head with a smirk on his face, before looking around at all of his friends. “This was definitely the best summer that I could’ve asked for and I want everyone to know that it wouldn’t have been the same without each and every one of you.”

“Awe, Louis,” Liam smiled as he put his hand on his heart jokingly. “That is just so sweet.”

Rolling his eyes, Louis smiled to himself. “Just go, Liam.”

“My favorite part of the summer was definitely just being by the beach every day,” Liam commented as he dug through the bag of marshmallows. “I enjoyed playing Frisbee with all of you and just messing around in the ocean and just have fun with my friends.”

“These are all so heart-felt and sentimental,” Doniya grinned. “I love it! We’re all getting so cliché!”

“It’s your turn, Mae,” Zayn said as he looked over at Mae, a smile on his face. “I’m sure it’ll be about Niall, but we all want to hear it.”

Mae laughed to herself, before she let out a sigh. The last few days of this summer had been extremely emotional for her. She would never tell any of the guys or Doniya but for the past three nights she had been crying herself to sleep because she knew it was going to be hard for her to leave. These people had completely changed her life after being with them for three months and as she thought about her favorite moment, which was the whole entire summer, she felt her eyes sting with tears. All she could think about that they were all going back to England together, as friends… and she was going back home by herself, friendless. She sat quietly for a few seconds, letting the water that welled up in her eyes pass.

“This whole summer was just great,” she sighed. She looked around at Doniya and all of the guys. “I got close to all of you and it was just awesome. I met Doniya on the first day and she easily became my new best friend. And through her I met all of you and even if we had a slow start of becoming close, I wouldn’t change it for anything,” she paused as she waited for the guys to laugh and make fun of her emotional, pathetic memory, but all of them were staring at her with straight faces waiting for her to continue, as if they were genuinely interested. She looked down at her hand that was being held my Niall, before she continued.

“I was never one to really have a lot of boyfriends, but meeting one here I think was great,” she said with a tiny smile. “But even if we never became anything, knowing Niall and the rest of you all was the best experience. I know I can go to any of you for anything, and you’re all so nice and caring. I appreciate how all of you just accepted me right away and considered me a friend and included me in a lot of the things you did, and I don’t think I could ever meet better friends than what I came across this summer.”

“Awe, Mae-Mae!” Louis grinned, before giving her a tight hug. “That’s so nice. You know we all feel the same way about you!”

“That almost made me cry,” Doniya said with a smile as she looked at Mae. “I’ll miss you, Mae.”

Mae smiled and nodded her head, knowing that if she were to say anything the tears would return.

“Okay, Niall,” Zayn grinned. “You’re up!”

“Bringing Mae in as a friend and, what I think, a part of the family was definitely my favorite part,” Zayn shrugged, before popping a marshmallow into his mouth. “I knew this summer was going to be awesome because I had all of my friends with me, but meeting someone new to share the summer with was really cool. I am surprised that we all made it this far with Mae because I feel like there aren’t many friendships like this anymore, so I think it’s awesome.”

“And last but not least,” Doniya said as she looked over at Niall. “It’s your turn, Niall.”

Niall smiled to himself and sighed. “I have a lot to say.”

“We’re ready,” Liam grinned. “This conversation is just saying everything you thought about the summer, so long responses are allowed.”

Chuckling to himself, Niall nodded. “Well, I just want to think Zayn for inviting all of us, and Doniya for meeting Mae on the first day, or I probably wouldn’t have any idea who she was. Having all of my friends and girlfriend to share this summer with was definitely one of the best things I could have asked for,” Niall looked over at Louis and smiled slightly. “And Louis, I know we went through a couple of things this summer that we definitely disagreed on, and I just want to thank you for still being there for me as my best friend and not just giving up on me.”

“Anytime, mate,” Louis grinned, Niall’s compliment obviously having an impact on him, which caused Mae to smile.

“And I know I wasn’t around like I should’ve been for you guys,” Niall said as he looked around at his friends. “I know I was a little too into my relationship with Mae, and I apologize because I came on this trip to be with my friends.”

“You met someone you wanted to spend a lot of time with,” Harry shrugged. “We see you all the time at home. We forgive you.”

“And even though this is our last night together,” Niall said, looking down at Mae. “I’m not going to forget anything about this summer and what we’ve done. You’ve become one of my best friends and even when we’re not together we’re still going to keep in touch. You’ve definitely changed this summer, and I’m so happy that I met you.”

“Awe,” Everyone cooed as Mae’s cheeks turned bright red. She looked down at her and Niall’s hands as she felt tears sting her eyes again, and she definitely didn’t want to cry in front of everyone. At that moment it was really hitting her that the summer had almost completely come to an end, and she wasn’t sure if she was so emotional because she was going home and starting college soon or if she was scared to be without Niall.

But whatever the reason, she knew tomorrow was going to be one of the hardest days of her life.
