Summer Love

thirteen.

It had been almost a week since Mae, Doniya, and all the guys went to Disney, and things between Mae and Niall were going great. They saw each other nearly every day, Niall had dinner over at Mae´s house more, and nothing about their relationship changed (except that now they were boyfriend and girlfriend).Mae’s feelings continued to grow for Niall with every day she saw him, and the last thing on her mind was leaving him when the summer was over; she just wanted to enjoy her time with him and take advantage of the months they had left.

As Mae lay out on the beach by herself, her eyes closed and her Ipod playing a playlist that she made before the summer started, she couldn’t help but let her thoughts wander to Niall. Today he was with Doniya, Zayn, Harry, Louis, and Liam, and she couldn’t wait for him to get back so she could see them. They had plans to go shopping downtown and possibly grab a bite to eat for dinner, like their first date of the summer, and Mae couldn’t wait.

Mae was broken away from her thoughts as someone pulled one of her headphones out of her ear
and plopped down beside her. She turned her head and squinted her eyes to see Louis sitting next to her with a smile on his face. “Thanks for inviting me!”

“I thought you were with Doniya and the rest of the guys,” Mae commented. “Why aren’t you?”

Over the Disney trip, and as Mae went over to the Malik’s rental house more frequently, she got closer with Louis. They never really hung out or anything as if they were really good friends, but when they saw each other they would have a small conversation, and Mae thought Louis was one of the funniest and nicest people she had ever met. Mae thought it was nice that all of the other guys were talking to her more and treated her more as a member of their home than a stranger that they met a little over a month ago, which made her feel less of an outsider with them.

“I over-slept,” Louis chuckled. “So, they just left me behind. Which is fine, I guess.”

“You guess?”

“I thought it’d be cool to go to wherever they’re going,” he replied. “But I can always go by myself or with someone another time.”

Mae sat up. “Where did they even go?”

Louis shrugged casually. “Who the hell knows,” he smiled and looked at Mae. “Shows how much I really care, right?”

Laughing to herself, Mae nodded. “You must care so much.”

“I do,” he nodded, his tone laced with sarcasm. “I really, really do.”

“So, do you have any other plans?” Mae asked curiously. “We can go swimming for a bit and then grab a bite to eat if you want?”

“That sounds lovely,” Louis said happily, before standing up and racing towards the crashing waves. “Race you there!”

As Niall sat at McDonalds with Doniya and the rest of the guys, he couldn’t help but think of what Mae was up to. Of course he wanted to invite her, but he figured since he didn’t come up with the plan to go out today then he shouldn’t just invite Mae. Even though they haven’t been together very long, it was hard for him to go without seeing or talking to her, but he wouldn’t admit that to the other guys, knowing that they would make fun of him (well, besides Louis, who wasn’t there at the moment because apparently sleep was more important than going out).

While Niall listened to everyone talk amongst themselves, he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He smiled to himself, thinking that it was probably Mae wondering what he was doing or what time he was getting home. But as he looked at the caller I.D. his eyes went wide and he felt his stomach drop.

It was Steph. Stephanie was calling him and he had no idea why.

Niall slowly scooted out of the booth, before glancing at the guys and Doniya. “I’ll be right back.”

Uninterested in where Niall was going, or even in what he was saying, all of the guys and Doniya just gave him a nod, before he turned on his heel and walked towards the room where the unoccupied playplace was located. He sat down in one of the booths and stared at the phone screen, wondering if he should answer. And he didn’t know why, but he did.

“Hello?” Niall said, glancing through the glass window to see Doniya and the guys carrying on with their conversation.

“Niall?” said the familiar voice that Niall hadn’t heard since before the summer began. “What are you doing?”

“Why are you calling me?” Niall asked confused, ignoring both of Steph’s questions. He didn’t want to bring up the break up or anything that would cause a debate or argument while he was out with his friends.

“I just wanted to see what you were up to,” she replied casually.

“Well, I’m out right now,” Niall commented, his tone slow. “And I’m still a bit confused as to why you’re calling me.”

“Well, I’ll just call you later tonight then,” she said with a soft sigh. “I was just wanting to talk for a bit.”

“Okay,” Niall responded, his tone short and clipped. “Bye.”

He hung up the phone and sighed to himself, not even sure what to do about Steph calling. Was he supposed to tell Mae about his past relationship, even though he didn’t think she had anything to worry about? Was he supposed to just let it go and ignore Stephanie? Or should he talk to Steph and allow himself to become friends with her again?

He wasn’t sure, and as all those thoughts ran through his head he sent Louis a text, before putting his phone back in his pocket and walking out the playplace door to rejoin his friends.

Louis sighed to himself as he and Mae sat on the couch of the Malik’s house watching a movie. He had spent the whole afternoon with Mae, and this was the first time they have sat down to actually rest. After swimming in the ocean and building a sand castle for almost two hours, they made a quick stop at Wendy’s to get something to eat, went miniature golfing, and played at the arcade that was down the street. After nearly seven fun, energized hours of running around, they finally decided to wind down and watch a movie.

Louis’s phone vibrated on the end table next to him, before he picked it up to see that he had a text from Niall. He glanced over at Mae to see her absorbed in the movie that she had picked out, before he opened the message, his eyes widening slightly as he read the tiny letters on the screen.

Steph just called me… help?”

It wasn’t that Louis loathed Stephanie; he just didn’t really take a liking to her. She broke up with his friend for not really any reason at all, and now she was trying to make amends with him as if nothing happened before the summer began. And that, of all things, pissed him off.

“Something wrong?” Mae asked Louis after noticing that he was staring at his phone and not the TV screen.

“No,” Louis said as he looked up at her. He gave her a reassuring smile as he locked his phone and set it back on the end table, deciding that for right now, he would be silent about the Stephanie situation.
