…. Back at the Hotel Room (Where Nicole and Amanda Are Staying)….
“It’s only temporary till tomorrow, after that we will both be back to LA.”I nodded to what Amanda said. I asked her why didn’t the BGA offer us a bigger room to stay in, and then she replied; I guess it will do for now. We were both getting ready to sleep, but a knock on the door stopped us from that. “What now?” She groaned and I laughed lightly, we really are tired and we need to just sleep off the stress. “Roxanne? Hey, what brings you here?” Amanda hugged Roxanne and let her inside. I stood from my bed and hugged her back.“I know you may hate me and never want to talk to me again; but since we are both going into separate lives; I guess it’s your right to know the truth…” Huh? What truth is she talking about? Oh God! Don’t tell me that Vera is still alive! She can’t be! I saw her dead! She sat down on the edge of my bed and held my hands in hers. “I’ll leave you two alone.” Amanda spoke and Roxanne nodded to her.
“Nicole? (I looked at her.) Do you remember anything about your childhood?” I furrowed my eyebrows at her, confused from her question. “Not really, all what I recall is I had a single parent, my dad actually… and we used to live in Boston, but then we shifted to LA. Why are you asking?” I saw her eyes twinkle in tears, tears that yet have not fallen off. “You’ll probably think I’m crazy now, but may I ask you one question?” I nodded, she’s getting me nervous. “Have you ever seen your mother?” Why is she bringing this up! I don’t like talking about my mother. “(My head tilted low and I shook my head depressed.) No, I used to ask my dad all the time about her… He used to tell me that she was pretty, and had to leave us because of her lifestyle…” She hugged me tight, for some untold reason. What is wrong with her? I’m the one that never met my mother!
“(I dropped the hug and looked at her.) You don’t have to feel sorry for my case, its fine… at least I think she’s happy wherever she is.” She yelled out in frustration: “I WAS NEVER HAPPY UNTIL I SAW YOU HERE! YOU KNOW HOW HARD IT WAS FOR ME TO LEAVE YOU BOTH!? TO LEAVE YOU AS A 2 YEAR OLD GIRL!? TO NEVER WITNESS YOUR GRADUATION! OR EVEN YOUR FIRST WORD THAT YOU EVER SPOKE!? I’M A TERRIBLE PERSON AND I KNOW YOU’LL NEVER FORGIVE ME! THIS IS WHO I AM; I LEFT YOU TO KEEP YOU SAFE! FAR AWAY FROM THE WORLD OF CRIME AND THE RISK OF BEING HUNTED BY MY ENEMIES!” The room started spinning around me; I couldn’t stay still or quiet anymore.
“(I spoke in a shaky voice, fearing the truth.) What do you mean…?” She cried deeper, and it made me also start tearing. “I’m your mother… The one that sacrificed her life and her presence around you, just to keep you safe… I never thought you would grow up to be just like me, a fierce and tough secret agent… Please honey try to understand, I know this is tough for you to adapt… But it’s the complete truth.” I shook my head in denial, this can’t be true.
“No, you’re just joking right now… it’s not true… (She hugged me and I started crying deeper as my voice raised.) HOW COULD YOU LEAVE ME! WHY MOM!? WAS I A BAD KID?! WHY!” We both cried till our eyes couldn’t blink anymore. This is not happening, I’m not an orphan? I have a living mother? No wonder we look so similar, talk the same way, behave the same way… She held me close, and tucked me in bed as she slept beside me, racking me back and forth till my eyes dozed in a sleep. Please dear God, don’t make this be a dream, I have a mother...
