Listening to Niall
Chapter 20: First time for everything
"So when I call your name you will come to the front of the class and introduce your projects concept" Mr. Lerner sat down behind the teacher's desk and picked up the name sheet.
"Lea Thomson you're up first" Lea got up from the seat by my side and walked to the front desk.
It's Thursday morning and we were supposed to bring sketches for our projects. There is this contest with an Italian company called 'Alessi' and my teacher wants us to take part. The contest is called 'Alessi in love' they want students to design items that can be considered as a love gift. Last night I remembered I had no work to show and sat down sketching my idea and making little models out of red play dough.
"Jamie Hart, Your next- Do you have what to show the class?" My teacher asked.
I nod and stand up, wandering why he would ask me such a question.
"So my concept is basically the phrase ''till death do us part' umm.." I take my little models out of a plastic box I put them in last night so they won't get damaged. I spread my sketches on Mr. Lerner's table for him to see.
"So, I don't know how many of you know this but once upon a time, people were buried with a string tied around a finger. The string was attached to a bell outside the grave. That was done because they didn't have a good way to make sure people were really dead or because they wished their loved ones will come back to them. So if and when the person came back to life and moved, the bell would ring and the family would come and rescue the person" I swallow and smile, watching the faces of my classmates. Rachel nodded to me to continue with an encouragement 'thumbs up' gestured.
"So at first I thought to design bells as a grave decoration" I pick up my sketches to show the class.
"Sounds a little morbid to me" Ariel called out, making some people laugh
"Let her finish" Lea snapped.
"I like this Idea keep going" My teacher replied to my glance at his direction.
"Because it is a little sick, I thought to make it into a kind of charm bracelet or pendent, dividing the bell from the clapper. That way it's kind of like the half hart that one wears while the other half is with their soul mate. I'm kind of giving it a new twist. I want it to be engraved with the sentence." I look at my teacher to see what he thinks. He holds up one of my play dough models examining it and then showing it to the class. "This is a wonderful idea! It's the size of the things the company has, it's the kind of thing they might sell and the concept of using a bell-"
"But a bell to me is like calling your butler to get something done for you" Ariel cuts in
"Well yes and no. You want to do things for your significant other. That’s how a relationship works you do for him and he does for you because of the love you share for each other, so a bell resembles it well in my opinion, your partner calls out to you when he needs you" I say.
Ariel just sat there and looked at me with obviously nothing more to say.
"Great project Jamie, we need to give these in on Sunday so you have a lot of work ahead of you. Build it in 3D, and send me photos via Email so I'll know where you stand with it before you upload it to the contest webpage" The teacher said dismissing me.
"Next student" He picks up his name sheet. "Ariel Conrad"
"Mr. Lerner, do we all need to send you emails?" She asked
"No" He said "I asked Jamie since she missed a lot this week"
I guess someone let my teachers know I was in the hospital these few days. I was suppose to go back home to Niall's parents this weekend but I can't see myself doing it now with all the work I have.
When we are let out I go find my friend at the main cafeteria.
"Jamie! Call my phone" Harry calls out to me as I am spotted walking towards them.
"Why?" I say taking the seat that has been saved for me by Niall. I kiss his lips.
"Just call" He says. I take out my phone and press his name on my call list.
"Lollipop lollipop ohhh lalala lollipop…" I hang up while my friends laugh.
"Funny" I smile at him.
"We all have that ring tune for you now" Louis waves his phone
"Not me, I still have your special tune" Niall puts an arm round my waist. I kiss his cheek.
"So you're going to Niall's for the weekend ha? How does it feel going there this time as the girlfriend?" Liam asks me. I can feel Harry staring at me. I was looking at Eleanor as I answer him. "Just like before". El looked back at me. We had that silent langrage look going on. That’s how it is with best friends you understand each other without talking, and she knew something is up. Thing is Niall maybe doesn't understand it yet but he understand when we go into langrage mode.
"What is it?? Tell me!" He says
"No"
"Why not?"
"You don't have to know everything"
"It's rude to keep secrets when other people are around you" He frowns
"Well, we didn't say or do anything so I don't know what you're talking about" I say smiling at El.
When we get up to go back to our next class I pull Niall aside.
"You're going to tell me what was up with you and El then?" He smiles down at me
"Well yeah, umm listen I have a problem this weekend" I look up at his face, which goes back into a frown
"What kind of problem?"
"The kind that might need us to push it to next weekend" I say
"Why? What happened?"
"Well I have this really big project to give in end I've missed so much already. I really need to stay and work on it" I am talking really fast to make Niall understand before he gets upset. He was really looking forward to this weekend.
"Ok but its only Thursday. Won't you be done until tomorrow? We only leave around 13:00"
"I'll try my best but keep in mind I might not be able to"
"Fine I'll talk to you later" He bent down to kiss my cheek and walked off.
He was mad, but what can I do.
I walk to the computer room to meet up with Lea, Rachel and Mia to start working on the bell.
I have a laptop at the dorms but I don't like working with 'Solidworks' using it since the screen is too small for me to see well.
I take a seat in front of one of the computers, I put my hair up in a bun and slip on my glasses.
"What kind of music should I put on?" Mia asked
"Put the top 100" Lea answered her.
As we sit, work and sing along I slowly but surely get my bell to look the way I want it too.
As I wait for my first try to finish Rendering I check my phone. I have a message.
From: Eleanor
What's up?
From: Jamie
I probably can't go to Niall's this weekend because of school and he's mad
From: Eleanor
Don't worry he'll get over it. See you later love
"Look who it is Jamie's girl pack" Ariel walked into the room followed by Rose. Just what I need.
Rose used to be really good friends with El and me, and be part of the gang. She used to live across from us and chill at are flat all the time since she hated her roommate. But after a year of trying to turn El and me against each other, and crying to us that she constantly feels like a third wheel and bad mouthing us to are friends, we had enough and put an end to that friendship. The boys took are side and she was out of the group as well. I try being nice when I see her asking her how she is and how is school, but she hates us for cutting her off, and a year later I still have people I don't even know coming up to me and making snotty remarks about the way we treated her. That’s how Ariel started with her behavior towards me.
"Ariel cut it out ok?" I say having enough of her for one day.
Rose pulls her to the far side of the room and they sit and leave us alone.
About two hours later I send my photos to my teacher praying that it's good enough and I won't need to cancel on Niall.
"So what is up with tomorrow? Did you finish?" Niall asked me. I was holding the phone with my shoulder and head as I was busy washing the dishes.
"I hope so, though he still didn't answer my Email so I don't really know yet"
"Ok, well let me know, I'm playing football with the lads so I'll come by later"
"Don't I'm having a girl's night with Eleanor and Perrie and boys aren't allowed."
"Oh yeah? Did you hear that lads- The girls are banning us from their girl's night" He yells to the other boys
"Bye Ni" I say hanging up the phone while he and the other boy's are deciding if to crash our party or have one of their own.
"El?" I call out
"Yeah?"
"Is it ok if I ask Rachel Lea and Mia to join are girl's night?"
"Sure! Why not? It'll be fun"
I call Rachel and invite them over. The three girl's room together two buildings to our right, so it's not long until there is a knock on the door and they walk in.
"Hi" They walk in with a bag of popcorn.
"Oh food!! Good call Jamie for inviting them" Perrie peeks from the sofa.
"Yeah we were about to sit down for a movie too when you called and decided that joining you will be even better" Mia joined Perrie on the sofa.
"SO what are we watching?" Rachel asked sitting on the beanbag.
"Romeo and Juliet" I smile sitting down next to her sharing the beanbag.
"Ohhh I wanted to watch that! Fun" Lea is sitting down on the floor leaning her back to Mia's lags.
We start the movie, but obviously we aren't really watching since we are talking among us.
Rachel said something about Ariel and Rose at the computer room today, and from that comment we got around to telling them all that happen between us.
"You're version of the story sounds so much better then hers" Mia was munching on popcorn.
"You heard her side?" I raise my brows
"Yeah, when you left today she started talking to us, asking all these questions, and then somehow from there she got to why you aren't friends anymore"
"Well is she still saying that we didn't like all the attention she was getting from all the boys?" Eleanor asked
"Yeah, and she said that Niall was into her first, and once you pushed her away you made him fall for you" Lea replied looking at me.
"Wow, that is funny, since Niall never liked her in the first place" I say shocked
"Yeah remember that time he bought over sushi? And she wasn't invited and she got really upset and told him she doesn't appreciate him coming hanging out but not inviting her for sushi" Perrie laughed
"Yeah and the thing is I don't even think he ever stepped foot in her dorm room" I say
"That girl has problems" Eleanor said
"Yeah but I feel bad for her nonetheless" I sigh
"How did you cut her out?" Rachel asked
"Well the fifth time she called me over and started crying that she feels like a third wheel and all I stopped her saying she is, and there is nothing bad about it. Eleanor and I are best friends since ever, and a lot of people feel that way with us. I said I feel like a third wheel when I'm with Zayn and Perrie and you don't see me crying about it."
"No you didn't!" Lea said a wide smile on her face.
"When my friends cry my heart breaks. It does but she pushed it too far, the tears stopped working on me." I take some popcorn from the bowl on Rachel's lap.
"And then what happen?" Mia asked me
"Then she said that she doesn't understand why everyone pushes her away. She said it's the same with every single friend she makes at some point or another they push her away, and she is such a good friend so how come it happens"
"Well if that’s the case then the problem is her and not the other girls, she needs to learn from her mistakes" Mia said
"That’s what I said but in a nice way" I pointed
"The first and last time she tried talking to me, I told her I don't like it when I take friends under my wing and share my closest friends with them and then they go badmouth me to those same friends I Introduce them too. I told her it's the last time this happens and if it does again we are done. It happen again and we are." Eleanor snapped her fingers.
"Your right" Mia nodded at her "she's crazy"
"But don't you care that she's talking about you to other people?" Rachel asked me
"You know, at first I did, because truth be told no one likes to be talked about behind their backs especially bad things, but then I got over it thinking that people who know me wouldn't believe her and people who do chose to believe aren't worth my time anyway and I just can't care less about people who don't know me" I say.
In the morning I check my email to see if I was answered by my teacher.
After seeing no reply Eleanor and I go down to wait for Niall to pick us up for school.
We had a short day on Friday's so it gave a feeling of a longer weekend.
"Good morning boys" We greeted them when we got into the car
"Did you get an answer?" Niall asked as I kissed him
"No.." I sigh making a sad face.
"What is he waiting for?"
"I don't know"
Niall lets me of at the building I'm at today and I walk into class.
Every now and then I check my email to see if I got an answer. When I finally do get one at 12:00 it's not good.
I walk over to the boys flat to talk to Niall.
"Are you ready?" He asked when I walk into his room
"Ni, I can't come"
"Why?"
"Because I need to fix it. It's not good enough and we need to send it in on Sunday" I say
"Well you have 'solid' on your laptop bring it with you"
"I can't see well on the laptop and it needs to be perfect"
"Well I'll put the program on my computer at home and you can work on it there"
"Niall your computer at home won't be fast enough for the program or strong enough"
"You don't know that"
"But I don't want to try and then be stuck" I look at him "I know you were looking forward for this but it will just have to wait a little longer"
"Work on your laptop so it's a little bit harder for you, big deal. Do it for me"
"Niall please! It's a school project and it's really impotent to me"
"You can work on your laptop you just don't want to" He throws his words at me like knifes
"That's not true" I say hurt.
"If it wasn't then you would just use the laptop"
"Come on Niall you have to understand it's not that I don't want to I just can't this week"
"And next week you'll find a different reason why you can't"
"No I won't"
"Forget it Jamie" He says taking his bag and walking out of his room.
Thank god Louis and Liam left for home already and weren't around to hear this stupid fight
"Niall don't walk away like this" I call after him
"Jamie you made your decision now I'm making mine, I'm walking away" He said opening the front door. I walk out after him "Niall please don't be like this"
"Jamie drop it, you don't want to come. Fine! Don't" He ran down the stairs taking two steps at a time.
"Niall don't be mad at me" I plead. I feel really bad but he can't make me chose between him and school.
"Bye Jamie" He got in his car and drove off.
I walk back to my empty flat. Eleanor left for home too. I have angry tears running down my cheeks. I take my earphones and leave again deciding to take a run. I'm not supposed to be running yet, but I needed to get my feelings under control and it felt like the only thing that can help.
As I was running I played the fight in my head. That made my tears start up again. Why was Niall so stubborn? And why did he just drive away? Is that it? Is this the end? Because of a stupid fight? I stopped running and started walking instead since the crying made it hard to breathe. I was taking deep breaths when someone touched my shoulder. I wiped at my tears as I turned around to find myself face to face with Mr. Stalker.

I LOVED THE ENDING.... but haz is still alone... oh well
