The Bad Boy Effect

Music Night

I don't know how the week went by so quickly considering all that happened over the weekend. I managed to keep away from Niall and I tried to get to know Harry a little better. I've known Harry most of my life but nothing more than a friend--more like an acquaintance until my freshman year. Although we hadn't been on any dates yet we were planning on it tonight, after music night at Harper's. It wouldn't be anything spectacular, just bowling or something. It'd be eight before we left the coffee shop and I didn't want to be out too late.

I walked into Religions class with El and we pulled out our books.

"So have you talked to Niall lately?" I tried to act like nothing was wrong. I'm sure she didn't know what happened Friday. Oakley barely knew anything; just rumors going around.

"No, not really. I've had work a lot this week. Why?"

"It's just, for some reason, he's started talking to me again. It's like a miracle! And I think it started when you guys became friends." I tried to let out a fake giggle. El was way too innocent.

"Yeah? What do you guys talk about?"

"He's asked about you a few times. He asked why you didn't come to church and he said he missed you last night at our church sesh." El seemed a little disappointed as well.

"I know El, I'm sorry. I had work and I couldn't take off." Lie. "I'll make sure I tell my manager I can't work Wednesday nights anymore." Her eyes brightened,

"We should do something this weekend! I know you usually party with your friends but maybe on Saturday we can have a girls day! We can get our nails done and watch movies and--" the bell cut her off.

"Hello class, today we will be talking about Taoism. Not t-t-t-taoism. It's pronounced with a d-d-d-d-taosim." I don't know why he didn't just say, 'with a D'. "Now being a Taoist is like being a cat." This was ridiculous. I wish I could make brownies with Harry in home ec. "When meditating, it is completely different from the other religions we have learned. Louis, can you name the other religions?" Louis sat up from his nap and tried to answer the question. It was useless. "Can anyone else tell me?"

I sat, watching the clock. While doodling on my paper I thought about Niall. Maybe I was being mean, not talking to him for so long. I hadn't answered one text or call from him. I could try to talk to him, but not until after my date with Harry. That was much more important to me. I really shouldn't even talk to him until I can stop putting makeup on Harry. Who knows how long that will last.

"Now being one with the Tao is something important to their religion, if that's how you see it. Like I said, meditation for the Tao is like a cat." I looked up at our teacher, I must have missed most of the lesson. Who said anything about a cat? "When the Tao meditate, they are not necessarily looking for enlightenment. They already have it with them. Therefore, they can meditate for however long they wish and then get up and go whenever they please. A cat is similar. They sit, they stare, and when they are tired of sitting and staring, they get up and go one with their life." Everyone laughed but I listened closely.

That's how I need to think. I shouldn't feel tied down. I am who I am, whether it is good girl Ada or bag girl Ada. I can leave my separate lives whenever I please. I'm a cat, I'd like to be one with the Tao.

I was running late for work but I needed to make sure I had proper clothes to change into when Harry and I left for our date. I chose some leggings and another big sweater that I own. It's casual and I know for a fact Harry likes it. I neatly placed it in my bag and left.

When I got to work there were many people there getting ready for the night. We always had a lot of staff on Thursday's because only those who didn't enjoy music missed out on the fun.

"Hey Scooter," I said as I rushed behind the counter. Scooter looked at me and rubbed the back of his neck.

"You're finally here! I need some help with these lights." Scooter was such an awesome guy. He reminded me of Oakley, just not as hott or smooth with the ladies. I liked his geekiness, it made me feel in place. Time went by fast and those performing showed up. The music would start at 6:30 and Harry would go on fourth. If everything went well we'd be out before 7:30.

After Scooter and I pushed some tables away from the stage Carol hooked up the mic and handed it to me so I could introduce the acts. I was in charge of the whole first part of the event.

"Hi everyone! Thanks for coming out again." The room calmed down as I spoke. "We have about eight acts tonight which is awesome!" I used a lot of excitement in my speech. This was the only attention I actually enjoyed from people. "Don't forget we have tea buy one, get one free tonight and all of our books in that box in the corner are 50% off!" I looked at my sheet to make sure I knew Carol was up first, "And here is Carol with," I paused and coughed to cover up my nerves. My face was bright red, "here is Carol with Piano Man!" I walked off the stage and everyone clapped for Carol. I don't think they saw my pain. It was Niall, waiting in the corner for me. Harry was talking with Zayn and Liam so I ran over to him and grabbed his arm pulling him to the back of the shop.

"What are you doing here?" I whispered furiously. He would not ruin my night.

"It's nice to see you too princess."

"Cut the crap Niall! I'm finished with you! I don't care about any of your past anymore. You crossed the line with Harry." He looked down, ashamed at himself....I think.

"I wanted to apologize for that."

"Then apologize to him, not me. You're such a disgusting pig. I should have never cared about you or any of your games." He took my arm gently,

"Let me make it up to you. Please." I wiped the sweat off of my forehead and sighed. Why did he make me so weak yet so fearless?

"You better have one good apology ready for Harry. And then you need to give me time to forgive you because I actually like him. We're going on a date tonight too so get over it." He took a deep breath and held it. If he blew up I would definitely be finished.

"Okay, that's fine." He walked past me. I guess he was going to apologize now.

I walked out of the back and stood behind the register. Harry looked at me as he laughed with the guys. I smiled at him and shifted my head towards the clock, letting him know how excited I was. Carol was almost finished with his awful version of The Piano Man so I got ready to open the next act. Another loud roar from the audience and I got up; apparently not fast enough. Niall got up on stage and took the mic from Carol. No, no, no.

"Hi everyone." For the first time I saw Niall nervous. "Me name is Niall, Niall Horan and I'm new in town." His accent is so adorable. Liam and the rest of the mates looked at me and I shrugged my shoulders. I honestly had no idea what he was doing. It was so quiet in the coffee shop that I swear I heard someone's phone vibrating from their bag. "See, I started making friends at school and they're all so cool. Then I did something really stupid to make them all hate me. I would say what that is but it would probably embarrass a lot of people if I did." What is he doing? He looked at Harry with honest eyes. "I want to apologize to Harry Styles for the pain I've caused him. I never meant to hurt you or," please don't say my name. He briefly looked at me and then back at Harry. "I never meant to hurt you or anyone else. I seriously am so sorry for everything and if I can't earn any of your trust back I just want you to know I'm sorry." I felt Harry looking towards me but my eyes were locked on Niall. "That's all I have to say really. Here's the mic Ada." I walked to the stage and took it from him, acting like everyone else: confused.

"Okay guys, next up is Sarah and Maggie." Everyone clapped. It was like nothing happened.

Niall began walking out of the door and Harry followed him. I didn't stop either one of them, if they were going to fight that was their problem. Liam walked up to me, "What was that about?"

"Believe me, I have no idea. But I'm guessing he's sorry."

"Yeah, I guess. I'm going to go check on them. Harry said he's going to talk to him about it but I don't want to see another fight." He walked off and I changed my clothes. This date was still on.
