The Wall Flower

Chapter Six

--Carrie’s POV:

After bringing Laden home, he went to shower, while I sat outside in our front lawn with Mary and watched her splash in the sprinkler.

“Harry get back here right now.” I heard Robin yell from the house across the street. Harry’s house. Not long after the door jolted open and quickly slammed shut after Harry had left and sat down on the step. He vigorously ran his fingers through his hair before placing his head in them and continually shaking his head.

“go over there, I’ll watch Mary,” Tatum said from behind me. In response I shook my head.

“I couldn’t.” was all I could muster.

“just go, he came over when you were upset after his party.” With that she wrapped Mary in a towel and went inside. Here goes nothing.

“They don’t understand.” Harry said as I approached him. I froze where I stood in front of him not knowing if he knew I was here, or talking to himself. He just laughed throwing his head out of his hands like a mad man, “But you don’t care, do you? No one does. I don’t need your sympathy Carrie, I know you hate me and I don’t blame you for that. Just stop pretending, I have enough fake people in my life.” By now I had moved so I was sitting down next to him and watched his face as he rambled on.
“I’m a screw up aren’t I?”

“Harry where is all this coming from?” I finally said.

“I disappointed my whole family, Carrie, they all hate me.” was all he said throwing his head in his hands again.

“Stop that Harry,” I said grabbing his arm and pulling it away from his face. “Why would they think that?”

“Because!” he said raising his voice, “My whole life my dad, Robin, my mom, everyone has been expecting me to be a lawyer or doctor, sending me away to camps every summer or get a full ride for lacrosse and forced me to play, but that’s not what I want and nobody cares. You know, ever since we’ve graduated, everyone has asked me what I’m going to school for, and when I tell them I’m not going they look at me like I’m some idiot or something. They had always told me that I’m great at singing and I should do something with it in life, but when I do, I get yelled at.” He said gesturing towards the door.

“Have you ever told them that?” I said quietly, hoping he would also quiet down.

“And what would that do?” He asked sitting back down.

“Well at least they would know how you feel, but if you haven’t told them you don’t want to be a doctor, how would they know that?” I reasoned with him. “Harry, I know what it’s like to disappoint the people that love, but they’ll come around once they realize that you’re happy.” I offered.

I guess that was enough to convince him because he smiled, “Thanks, Carrie. Come here.” He aid standing up and offering me his extended arms.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“You’re going to help me pick out a song for my audition.” He said leading me to his room.
