The Wall Flower
Chapter One
I wake up from my alarm, not in my bed, but curled in a ball in front of my space heater reading Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time. Then I realize that it wasn’t my alarm clock, but a fire truck whizzing towards A Avenue North. I crawl across the room to my bed and curl up under the covers to enjoy the few hours of sleep I have left.
I relive all the comments, all the haze-y eyed stares, and mostly all the things he didn’t say. He watched as they pulled my hair, clawed my skin, and bruised my tender flesh, he watched and laughed with their cruel, spiteful comments, but he didn’t stop them.
I guess he wasn’t really my Mr. Darcy, and I guess I’ll never be his Elizabeth.

“Good morning, Miss Caroline, breakfast is on the table.” Linda, my father’s mistress greets me in the morning.
“Thank-you.” I respond with a smile. I walk into the dining room and see that Tatum, Mary, and Laden are already awake and sitting at the table. I take my seat in between my two sisters and look out the window, to the home of my not-so-prince-charming; also known as the home of Tatum’s best friend. Gemma and Tatum had been in the same school all through primary school, and starting today would be attending a university together where they would both most likely decide to major on the same degree. With that being said, you can imagine the Styles and Holster family spent a lot of time together, and you would be correct. Our families shared everything, hosted plenty of charity events, benefits, and household parties together. You could also assume after the plethora of events attending together, that everyone would get along, but that is where you would be mistaken..
In fact the first memory I have with this family would have to be my fifth birthday party. Being a little girl, all I wanted was a pink, bow, glittery party, and that’s exactly what I was going to get. But plans change, and people get replaced and instead, I get a blue, truck, muddy themed party. Not to the likeness of me, or my mother, but the neighbor boy whom I shared a birthday with.
“Carly,” my mother had told me, “Don’t you think it will be fun?” she had said, being 5, I instantly agreed to anything my mother asked and let Harry have his way. Of course, I didn’t do this without conditions. I still got to wear my pink party dress, a matching pink bow, and even had glittery nail polish. Assuming that the night would still be fun, we went to the Styles’ backyard where the party was held. Harry and I had always gotten along, as long as I did what he asked, and didn’t tell his mum when he was being naughty, that is.
“Carrie,” as Harry had called me, just so our names were similar, “This is my girlfriend, Jules.” He had told me that day.
That was the day I lost my best friend, and gained an enemy. That day Jules had not only tore the bow out of my hair saying that it was mean of me to wear anything special on Harry’s birthday, but she had also “spilled” her juice box on my party dress, which wasn’t stained, but traumatizing none the less. And Harry just stood and watched.
