Growing Pains
"Dear Diary, things have gotten much more complicated. It's different from the regular teenage problems. I found out that I am one of the Tomorrow People; the next step in human evolution. They call our powers the 3Ts; telepathy, telekinesis and teleportation. I found out that there is a shadow war going on between us and Ultra; the secret organisation that hunt us and the only way to keep my species from going extinct is to find my dad. And the only way to do that, is working for the enemy" . I liked writing down how I felt but apparently I need to hide my diaries better as my uncle Robert can read them whenever he likes to.
I put my diary in my pillowcase and turned off the lights. I was tired from everything that has happened since Monday so I dozed off quickly.
"Up, up! Becca, wake up" My mom said loudly opening my door.
I obviously didn't wanna wake up. It was Thursday and I'd appreciate some sleep.
"I'm gonna work late today so make sure you lock the house when you leave and don't come in late. Stay safe, okay?" She said as I sat down and rubbed my eyes.
"And oh Becca, clean up your room" She said in disgust and left.
Yeah mom sorry, I was too busy being captured and then working for the enemy who is my uncle. I got up and walked over to my bathroom, imagining my room would be clean when I get out. Then I heard something and turned back to see even my bed was made. Wow, those powers are legit! I yelled in my head. I quickly took a shower and then texted Chloe that I was running late. She said it's fine. I wanted to teleport to school but apparently sometimes my powers don't work perfectly as I found myself in the swimming pool.
"Oh for gods sake" I yelled as I got out.
I was soaking wet and I had no spare clothes. I quickly picked up a towel and tried to dry myself. I wasn't gonna risk teleporting again but I wasn't gonna walk around the school like this either.
"Come on Becca, you can do this" I said to myself and imagined myself in my room.
Thank god it worked. I quickly changed and this time drove to school.
"Sorry guys, I couldn't find my keys" I lied as I caught up with Harry and Chloe.
"It's fine. Actually we were planning on going out after school. You in?" Chloe said cheerfully.
I agreed and we went to our classes.
My last period was with Harry and we were sitting together.
"You know Beccs, it's like you're hiding something from me" Harry blurted out.
Where did that come from?
"What do you mean Harry? I share everything with you" I said confused, well of course not everything but I couldn't tell him that I was different.
"No I can tell you're not. Don't you trust me anymore?"
"Of course I do Harry! I'm sorry if I made you feel like that" I said as I held his hand.
The class ended and I went to my locker to put my stuff in. Then my phone started buzzing.
"Becca, you need to come over now" Robert said strictly.
Oh come on, I was gonna hang out with my friends. I texted Chloe saying I didn't feel well and went to Ultra quickly. The place gave me goosebumps every time I entered. They literally used my kind as lab rats. Apparently I was called to begin my training. First exercise was teleportation. They gave a partner, Luke, and he was training me.
"Okay Becca, I'm gonna throw this ball and imagine where it's going to be and catch it" He said holding out a red bouncy ball.
I nodded and tried my best to teleport where it was gonna be. I caught it but almost fell.
"You'll be able to teleport nicely soon" He smiled and we moved on to telekinesis.
"Now Becca I want you to lift this" He said pointing out a barbell which looked really heavy.
"How? I'm not that strong" I said confused.
"Not with your hands. With your mind" He said gesturing for me to sit.
I sat down and looked at the barbell. I imagined lifting it. It was really heavy but I managed lifting it. I couldn't believe my eyes. I tried to lift it higher but it fell down.
"Uh stupid" I said annoyed.
"Don't worry Becca, that was great. Now come along" He said holding my arm.
We went to another room and sat down.
"Reading someone's thoughts is just the beginning" He said smiling. "With proper exercise you can access their feelings, their emotions and even their memories" He said in my head.
I looked at his fascinated but a bit scared that he can wander in my mind if he wanted to. Then I saw flashbacks; my dad, Harry, my mom then Sarah teleporting me in the subway. Apparently he saw them too. But what if there are things I don't want them to see? Then I had a flashback of me and David talking on the roof. Okay enough! I quickly got up to leave.
"We're not done here" He said getting up too.
Oh yeah? I am.
"Uh I have to go. I forgot, my mom's waiting me" I lied and left the room.
"Oh just the girl I was looking for, walk with me" Robert came out of no where and put his arm on my shoulder, oh shit.
"Actually I'm in a hurry-" I tried to get out of the situation.
"It's okay, it can wait" He said as we started to walk.
Apparently he wanted to explain Ultra a bit more. He showed me their information room. There was computers all around and so much talking. Apparently they were tracking down breakouts by medical reports, police records, surveillance cameras.. anything they could use. I left after out little talk and quickly went to the subway station. I needed to warn David and the others about Ultra. I didn't want them to get hurt because of me.
"David we need to talk." I said in my head "David come on answer me" Still nothing. "Fine you don't wanna come to me. I'm coming to you" I said as I ran and imagined going there.
Even though I teleported on my ass, I managed to go there. Everyone looked at me confused.
"What are you doing here?" Sarah asked me annoyed as she walked over to me.
"Wow, what happened to welcome Becca, you're one of us, we're the lost boys speech?" I asked her confused.
"That was before you went to work for Ultra and Robert" She said in anger.
Really?! I was doing that for them.
"She's right. You have no idea what you have gotten yourself into" David added.
"Actually I do. That's why I'm here. Today they tried to read my mind so I'm here to give you guys a heads up. If I didn't leave, they might have found out I've been talking to you" I said sincerely.
"You're not talking to us. You're not seeing us. Not anymore" Sarah said making me frustrated.
"It's not like I want to. I'm working there because I have to! Because I have a life, a family" I said annoyed.
"You're not the only one who had a human life. Ask David about the siblings he left behind" She said looking back at him. He looked upset. "We all made sacrifices Becca and for some reason you think you're special" She said angrily and walked away.
I quickly followed her. She wasn't gonna get away with that.
"You don't think I know how it feels like to lose someone? Until Monday, I thought my dad, your hero, was a human loser who left me!" I said raising my voice and she stopped and faced me.
"Now I don't know what to think other than he's alive but how are you gonna find him if you're hiding down here like a bunch of paranormal refugees? I will do everything to find my dad and if that means working for Ultra, fine" I said making her angry.
"Robert's only goal is to eliminate our species. I worked there Becca, I know!" She said making me shocked. "Get it inside your head. It's just the beginning. You haven't even seen what they can do. As long as you're down here, the rest of us aren't safe!" She yelled and left.
Sarah worked for Ultra? That was some news but I wanted to help them as much as they wanted to help me. Apparently they didn't want me. I thought at least me and David we friends.
"Come on, I'll take you home" David said in my head and held my arm before I could even protest.
"Thank you" I smiled and he left without saying a word.
Then I realized it was 11pm and my mom was already home.
"Oh not again" I said under my breath and entered my house.
"Becca! Where have you been? I almost called the cops. You told Chloe you were sick?" My mom yelled the minute I got in.
Chloe looked a bit angry and worried.
"I'm sorry I lost track of time. I was walking round the city" I said as I sat down then there was a knock on the door.
My mom went to get it.
"Chloe I'm sorry" I said facing her.
"It's fine Becca but the next time you're gonna lie to me remember I'm your best friend" She said a bit annoyed.
"I'm sorry I promise I'll explain everything tomorrow" I smiled as Harry came in the room.
"Um Miss Conant, Chloe, can me and Becca have a moment alone please? It's kind of urgent" He said rubbing the back of his neck and they agreed.
I was confused.
"Becca so that's your secret?!" He asked me annoyed. I just looked at him confused.
"You're double timing me Becca?! Who's the guy?" He said hurt.
"What guy Harry? Are you gone mad?" I asked him in shock.
"Now you're gonna lie to me? I saw him walking you home. I expected better from you" He said and rushed off.
"Harry wait" But he didn't listen to me.
He was definitely talking about David but how could I explain to him that he teleported me back home from the Tomorrow People's hideout? I screwed everything up. I just ran up to my room in tears before my mom or Chloe could see me.
