Something You Want to Forget About
Finding Hope
I can do this. I can do this…
Those words kept repeating in Ameina’s head, trying to encourage her to try to swim. Breathing heavily, Ameina imagined how she’s going to swim, a picture of her doing a freestyle showing in her head.
She began to stretch, reaching her arms out, doing jumping-jacks, jogging a little bit. Those were the exercises they usually do in PE class.
It was three P.M., and Ameina went straight ahead to the pool after school. She wanted to try. She didn’t want to give up yet.
She jumped in, legs coming in first, and landed. The pool was quite deep, not enough for Ameina to even stand on her toes. She held on the edge of the pool, and her body turned so that her face is facing the water as she kicked off to do a freestyle. As she makes it halfway to the pool, she stops, feeling her left foot having a cramp, and it makes her unable to swim. Because of this, Ameina starts to drown.
She realizes that she’s drowning. “H-help!” she shouts, in hope that somebody will hear. Trying to keep her nose up the surface of the water, she swallows some of the water.
Nobody comes to help.
A blonde haired boy unlocked his locker, grabbed his backpack and an empty bottle and shut the door. He walked to a glass door and opened it, continuing to walk towards the school entrance.
He then heard someone scream a cry for help.
His ears twitched and he ran towards where he thought the sound was. It led him to the school pool, where he saw dark brown haired girl drowning.
“Help!” she continued to scream. The boy, who was in his soccer uniform, dived straight in to save her.
He swam towards her, who was still struggling in the water. He grabbed her arm and brought her back to shore. She was unconscious, so the boy put her down on the floor next to the pool.
Her eyes slowly opened, and the moment she saw him, she jolted up and coughed out water. “W-wha…” she stuttered, shivering.
“What were you doing?” the boy asked, sounding worried. He was dripping wet, still in his soccer uniform. “Wait, let me…” he didn’t finish his sentence, as he unzipped his bag and took out a jacket. “Put this on.” He handed it over to the girl.
“Th-thanks.” The girl replied. She then realized who was helping her. A flash of worry were in the boy’s eyes. “I’m fine.” The girl reassured him as he sighed in relief.
“Th-thanks for helping me,” the girl spoke again, “You’re – you’re wet. Here… have your jacket back.”
“Keep it.” The boy insisted, “Oh, uh, I’m… Niall.”
“It’s Ameina.” Ameina introduced herself. “But really, have your jacket back. You’re wet…”
“Please, just give it back to me tomorrow.” Niall uttered.
“Thanks, bye then.”
“I’ll walk you to your car.”
Ameina shrugged, but then walked to the girls bathroom to put a shirt and jeans on. They were a little bit wet since Ameina was still quite wet as well.
She grabbed her bag from a hook and went back outside, where Niall was still waiting.
“Why… are you doing this?” Ameina muttered to Niall.
“I want to help you. C’mon, I see you alone everyday.”
Ameina smiled a little and Niall smirked. He pat Ameina’s shoulder and walked her to the parking lot.
“Who’s driving you home?” Niall asked, glancing at Ameina. “My mom.” Ameina answered, sounding hesitant. “Anyways, thanks again.”
“No problem. See you tomorrow.” Niall replied, sounding friendly.
Ameina nodded and got inside, shutting the door of her car before her mom drove off, leaving Niall alone in the parking lot, going to his own car.
Ameina kept staring out the window, thinking about Niall. There was something different about this boy. There was something she noticed in his eyes. How they shone like stars in the sky, how friendly he was. But Ameina still thought he wouldn’t even bother to talk to her again tomorrow. But she half-hoped he would…
