Worth Fighting For
Catch Me
Louis had been travelling constantly over the next couple of weeks, recruiting more and more members for their team each day. When he wasn’t out recruiting, he was training the newcomers to the best of their ability.
The man in Angel’s dreams was appearing less often, but he was getting more frightening each time he showed up. She hadn’t told anyone, not even Gen, about this mystery man. She still wondered about what he meant about her potential. She was starting to assume that he meant she needed to be turned. If she was as powerful as the man said she would be and joined Louis’ team, they would have a better chance of winning this war.
Angel was working on a drawing of Louis when he appeared before her. She quickly held it to her chest so he wouldn’t see. Her face flushed.
“What?” she nearly snapped.
“I’ve been thinking about what you said,” he said. “You’re right. I can’t keep you caged here like a prisoner.”
He held out his hand.
“Where are we going?” she asked.
“I’m not spoiling the surprise,” he said, a faint smile playing across his lips, the first she’d ever seen.
She took his hand and he helped her up. He wrapped both arms around her.
“Hold on tight,” he said.
She put her arms around him and held him close. Before she knew what happened, they were flying past trees. She could actually see things as they passed by them. When she looked up at him, he was staring at her.
“I thought I might let you enjoy the view on the way,” he said.
She smiled and continued to watch all the scenes passing by.
After ten minutes, Louis spoke again. “Close your eyes,” he said.
Angel closed her eyes and her feet touched the ground. Louis’ arms were no longer around her. Instead he stood closely behind her.
“Open,” he whispered in her ear.
When she opened her eyes, the sight took her breath away. They stood on a mountain, in a shaded area, overlooking a crystal clear lake. The mountains cast a perfect reflection on the lake.
“Where are we?” Angel asked, taking in the view.
“Canada,” Louis replied. “This is where I go when I need to get away.”
He sat beside where she stood.
“It’s beautiful,” she said, sitting next to him and smiling. She felt more relaxed than she had in the past few months.
She looked at him and he smiled. “I’m glad you like it,” he said.
His smile was stunning. She couldn’t help but stare at him.
“I think this is the first time I’ve ever seen you smile,” she said.
He looked out at the view again. “I haven’t had much to smile about, lately I guess.”
Angel thought about the war that was about to begin. She felt that it would be starting very soon. Again, the thought of her being turned crossed her mind. If anyone was going to turn her, she wanted it to be him. She still wasn’t sure if she was ready to tell him.
Louis lied down on his back and Angel did the same. He watched her while she watched the sky. After a few moments, he followed her gaze.
“I thought you couldn’t be in the sunlight,” Angel said.
“We can, it’s just painful,” said Louis. “Besides, we’re in the shade.”
Angel simply nodded. She closed her eyes, and Louis looked at her again. He was desperately trying to fight the feeling in his gut. He could hear her heartbeat, steady but slightly quickened.
“Your heartbeat’s so loud,” he whispered, hearing its’ pace quicken after he spoke.
Angel’s face flushed again and her eyes opened. She couldn’t find words, his face being so close to hers. She just stared at him.
Louis propped himself up on his elbows and looked at the view.
“This is the most beautiful sight,” he said, reconnecting his eyes with Angel’s. “I’ve ever seen.”
Before he could stop himself, his lips collided with hers. He gently cradled her face in his hands. Not only could he hear her heartbeat, louder now than ever, but he could feel it. It felt like his own was beating again. He hadn’t felt so alive in over two-hundred years.
When he finally pulled away, Angel’s eyes stayed closed for a moment. She opened them slowly. Louis smiled, still holding her face with one hand. He rubbed her cheek with his thumb and she smiled back.
Louis thought about the group back home and his smile faltered.
“What?” Angel asked, propping up on her elbows.
He lowered his eyes to the ground. “I’m not supposed to be with you like this.”
Angel sat up and stayed silent. Louis looked up at her, seeing the hurt on her face. He sat up as well and turned her face to him. She kept her eyes down.
“I don’t know why, but I’m drawn to you. I’ve been holding myself back and fighting it but I can’t anymore.”
Angel finally looked at him. “Harry knew,” she said.
“Harry knows everything about me, that’s why he told you to stay away.”
“He said it’s happened before,” she said, lowering her eyes.
“Never like this,” he said. “I’ve never fallen for a human since I’ve been turned. There have been times where they fell for me but I never caught them. Now, I’ve fallen for you and you caught me.”
Angel couldn’t hold back the urge to smile. She looked into his eyes and he stared back. He took both her hands.
“If anyone finds out, we could be killed for this,” he said, pressing his forehead to hers.
She nodded. “I won’t tell anyone.”
He looked up at the sky.
“We need to get back,” he said. “I have some training to finish.”
They both stood up and locked themselves in one another’s embrace. Louis kissed the top of her head before taking off.
