Worth Fighting For

Talk To Me

Angel was walking down to the book shop when she heard that deep, smooth voice call her name. Without hesitation, she followed it down the alley. She reached the end and turned around to see the unknown man behind her.

“Angel,” he sang. “Where are you? I can’t seem to find you anywhere.”

She struggled against his power, but she could manage a little better now.

“I don’t even know who you are,” she said softly.

“Oh, but you will, darling,” he said, smiling. “And, with all my men looking for you, I will find you one way or another.”

“Why me?”

“You have potential to be one of my great ones,” he said, a smile creeping across his face. “You have great power within you.” He moved closer to her, then quickly added, “Not greater than mine, of course.”

“Is that your plan, then?” she asked.

The man chuckled and it sent shivers down her spine. “Dear, my plans are much, much bigger than that.”

He held her head with his hand and guided her lips to his.

She woke up, gasping, to Louis sitting next to her and looking very concerned. He was staring at her and he had one hand on each side of her.

“You were having a nightmare,” he said softly.

Angel nodded.

“What happened?”

“Nothing, really,” she lied, sitting up. She looked at her hands before looking up at Louis. “Do you guys have powers?”

“You could call it that,” Louis replied.

“What did you say to Roma last night?”

Louis cleared his throat and stood up. “Let’s get you breakfast.”

Angel was too tempted by the word “breakfast” to argue.

When they went in the kitchen, Angel noticed that not many people were around. She sat at the table.

“Where’d everyone go?” she asked.

“Hunting,” Louis said.

“Why aren’t you with them?”

“You ask so many questions.”

“And you answer none of them.”

“I answer some of them,” Louis defended.

Angel rolled her eyes. He handed her tea and toast. He started to walk off when she called out “wait!”

He slowly turned around.

“No one’s here. Talk to me.”

He sat in the chair next to her. “What do you want to talk about?”

“Tell me about the last human you danced with.”

Louis hung his head, and then looked back at her. He never shared personal information with anyone, especially humans. Only Niall, Liam, Harry, and Zayn, whom he called his brothers, knew anything personal about him. But, for some reason, this human felt trustworthy to him. He couldn’t place his finger on why.

“Her name was Rose. It was 1818 and we were having our engagement party. I think the whole town came. We danced for hours.”

Angel waited for him to continue. He sighed.

“This turns into the story of me being turned,” he said.

“Tell me.”

Louis hesitated before he continued. “Me and my best mate, Nathaniel, went outside to get some fresh air, and before we knew it we were turned.” He was silent for a while before he went on. “I fought the desire for human blood as much as I possibly could. When I’d finally taken control of it, I went back to find that Rose had already married another man.”

Angel didn’t know what to say.

Louis looked at her. All she could think to do was place her hand lightly on top of his and give him a sympathetic look. He gave a half-smile.

“What happened to Nathaniel?” she asked, removing her hand.

“He didn’t fight it like I did. He goes by Nathan now. He’s the one we’re going to war with. Joey was one of his men.”

She wanted to tell him about the man from her dreams. Maybe he had something to do with this. But she figured it would only worry him and he already had too much to worry about.

“Why did you move to London?” Louis asked.

“My parents…” she started, looking down. Louis understood.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly, placing a hand on top of hers.

She looked up at him, tears in her eyes. “It’s not what I was expecting,” she said, trying to laugh it off.

He wiped away a tear that had fallen. “You deserve better than this.”

Angel looked down again, not so sure if that was true. He lifted her chin.

“I’ll make sure you get out of this alive,” he said.
