Chapter 17

Charlie’s POV:

“No, you jump on three, not after!” Niall was yelling at me behind my iPhone. We were standing in front of the Statue of Liberty and I was attempting to get the signature teenage jumping picture in front of the large monument. I put my hands on my hips and shouted back at him.

“You’ve been pressing it on two, not three! That’s not my fault!” He rolls his eyes and we set up to take another picture.

“Alright, ready? One…two..three!” I jump in the air and give my best smile to the camera. He looks down at it and laughs.

“This one’s a keeper!” I jog over to him and look at the picture. My hair is sticking out in all different ways, but it’s still a good picture. I then take a full photo shoot of Niall pretending to hold the statue in his hand and pushing it over like the leaning tower of Piza. We get quite a lot of stares, but I don’t mind because we’re having so much fun.

Once we’re satisfied with the amount of pictures taken, Niall and I make our way up the winding staircase inside the statue.

“Did you know that there are 354 stairs in the Statue of Liberty?” I laugh as Niall spits out this information like a tour guide.

“I didn’t. But how am I not surprised that you do?” He chuckles as we continue to climb to the top. We finally get there and look out the opening and are welcomed by the beautiful sight of New York City. We both don’t say a word for a while as we take in our surroundings, but then Niall speaks.

“Charlie, can I ask you something?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you, uh..do you have feelings for Zayn?” A look of confusion spreads across my face as I whip my head to stare at the boy.

“No! Why would you say that?” He starts to shift uncomfortably as he answers my question.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or anything. I just, last night, you two looked really…close.” I thought back to our movie night, trying to remember what happened.

“You’re not making me uncomfortable. I’m just confused, I guess. I don’t mean to make it look like that. I think I just feel so comfortable around him that maybe it comes off as me liking him? But I can assure you, we’re just good friends. Nothing more.” He nods his head and we look back out the window.

“What about Harry?” My stomach drops as I hear him say Harry’s name. I can feel my cheeks start to flush as he stares directly at me for an answer. I try to compose my facial expression from nervous to calm as I turn to face him.

“Um, what about Harry?”

“Well, don’t be mad, but Emma and I talked about what Harry told you before the tour.” My eyes go wide. “And what happened in the bathroom.” I feel my jaw drop.

We stand there for a second as I begin to process what Niall just told me. I can’t believe Emma would tell him about our private conversation! My mind starts to whir as I think of the thousands of ways I’m going to use to kill my friend, but then as I look up at Niall’s concerned face, I begin to realize that Emma probably told him for my benefit. My assumption is proved right as he begins to talk.

“I’m really sorry, Charlie. Emma didn’t do it to gossip! She was just worried. She knows how much this job means to you and she wanted to make sure Harry wouldn’t mess it up just for a quick shag.” I laugh as I think back to her telling me the only way to fix my problem was to sleep with him. I guess that’s her way of showing concern, through sarcasm. I give Niall a small smile and a pat on the shoulder.

“It’s okay, Ni. I’m not mad. Surprised would be a better word.” His shoulders drop as he breathes a sigh of relief before looking up at me with his big blue eyes.

“Honestly though. Do you..you know?” I don’t answer him at first as I think about Harry. I smile inwardly as I think of his beautiful eyes and the dimple that deepens in his face when he grins. I remember what it felt like to run my fingers through his soft chocolate curls and I shudder when I think of his perfect lips on mine. Shit. I can feel my cheeks start to warm again.

I look back at Niall and he has a surprised look on his face; he must’ve noticed my change in demeanor.

“I…don’t know. It’s just confusing to me.”

“What is?”

“My feelings! When I first met Harry, I despised him. He was a pig and rude and I wanted nothing to do with him. But, then he apologized. And he’s changed so much. He’s been the perfect gentleman and a really great friend to me. And he knows I can’t get involved.” Niall nods his head slowly and speaks.

“Because of the contract.” I sigh and shake my head.

“Exactly. So, even if whatever I’m feeling is something more than friends, I can’t act on it. I really don’t want to lose this job, Niall.” He grabs my hand and squeezes it tight while giving me a very supportive look.

“I completely understand. And I know I speak for all the boys when I say that we would hate to lose you.” My heart melts as I smile at the blonde.

“But, I guess, from my point of view, I’ve been with Harry for three years now and I can say that the way he’s been interacting with you the past few weeks is completely different than how he normally is with women. I know you don’t want to lose your job, and I really don’t want you to either. But if this, you and Harry, seems like something that could remotely end up as a real thing, I wouldn’t keep the thought completely out of your head. Just something to think about.”

With that, he gives my hand one more squeeze before dragging me down the steps and onto the ferry to go on more sightseeing adventures.

We spent all morning and afternoon voyaging around the concrete jungle before having to get back to the hotel so the boys could make their way to Madison Square Garden for their first concert of the week.

I kept replaying what Niall said to me about how he noticed Harry’s change and how I shouldn’t just throw the idea out all together. I tried all day to place how exactly I felt for Harry, but I just couldn’t do it. Did I look at him the same way that I looked at Zayn? Not really. I knew I had a bit of a crush on Zayn in the beginning, but now thinking about kissing him feels very wrong.

But when I think of kissing Harry, I get butterflies in my stomach. It almost scared me how I felt myself actually trying to think of ways to get around the contract. I made a pact from the beginning I would never let a boy get in the way of my career. So why was I thinking of doing it now?

Pull yourself together, Charlie. You can’t do this.

Niall and I walked up to our floor and went in mine and Zayn’s room to see the rest of the boys lounging and playing video games. When I walked in the door, I was stopped short as I stared directly into a pair of beautiful green eyes in the corner of the room. Harry stood up and walked over to me, pulling me into a big hug before whispering in my ear.

“Why were you gone for so long?” My breath hitched and my knees grew weak as I felt his hot whisper on the back of my neck.

“Niall wanted to see everything. So did I.” He let go and stared down at me.

“Well, don’t make any plans for tomorrow afternoon, because you’re all mine.” He winked and sauntered back over to his spot on the bed next to Liam. I got my bearings again and walked over to my suitcase to get my towel and a change of clothes. I took a very hot shower and got ready for the show tonight.

I blow dried my hair and threw it in a messy bun, leaving some random pieces out front around my face. Because I had a little extra time, I gave myself a thick cat eye with black eyeliner and added some champagne colored shadow to the lid. I decided I didn’t want to put my contacts in so I get out my glasses and put them on. I laugh as I remember how my glasses make me look like such highschooler. I pull out my outfit consisting of my favorite red flannel shirt and a pair of skinny jeans and put them on. I finished my look with a leather watch, a pair of rose gold earrings and my tan combat boots. My final, and secret, addition to my outfit was a few spritzes of the boys’ perfume, which I went and bought when Niall was busy taking pictures with fans today. I misted it all over my body and took a deep breath; it smelled AMAZING. Wow.

I finished early and while the boys went to go take showers and get changed, I turned on the television and painted my nails with the new cranberry color polish I picked up from the drugstore earlier this afternoon.

We drove to the arena, not missing the throng of screaming fans out front. I was finally getting used to the loads of girls throwing themselves at our shuttles. It had become a normal occurrence everywhere we went. I remembered back to earlier today when I had to take a few dozen pictures when Niall and I were walking around, but I didn’t mind. I liked watching them interact with their fans.

We got inside the huge building and the boys wanted to go straight to the arena. The place was MASSIVE. It was almost unreal walking around the big area, probably because it was Madison Square Garden. I mean, this was a huge concert to play. Louis, Harry, Zayn and Niall all played soccer in the open area behind the floor seats and I sat on the stage with Liam. I turned as I heard Liam breathe out a huge sigh, smiling as he scanned the room.

“What are you smiling at?”

“This. We’re in Madison Square Garden. Three years ago, I was audition for the X Factor and now look where I am. Performing in one of the most famous places in the world with my four best mates. It’s just insane. I’m so thankful.” He shakes his head and I pat him on the back.

“I know you are. Your fans do too.” He smiled at me, causing his eyes to crinkle like they always do when he grins wide. I get a call on my radio from Paul saying he needs the boys in Hair and Makeup and I round them up to go backstage.

Its ten minutes until the show starts and I’m standing backstage with security and the boys. I give them all big hugs and wish them good luck. Harry is the last person I hug and I notice he holds on to me longer than the other boys. When he pulls me back, he has a big grin on his face.

“You’re wearing our perfume, aren’t you?” I start to blush and a deep laugh exits his throat.

“I may or may not have picked some up today.” He shakes his head and looks at me with dazzling eyes.

“Now you’re an official fan girl.” I scoff and punch him in the arm and he laughs again, sending chills up my spine. Why does this boy have such an effect on me?

“Shut up, Styles!”

“I’m sorry. I am. It smells good on you.” He winks and pulls me close to him so he can whisper in my ear.

“I forgot to tell you that I like you in glasses too. They look great.” I feel him place a small kiss on my cheek and then he ruffles my hair before running over to talk with the boys. I’m left standing there in a daze. Damn my thoughts.

When I wasn’t around him, I was fine for the most part. I thought about him, but I kept my feelings in check. But, when I was in his presence, it was like I had a whole new brain in my head. I couldn’t stop thinking about his beautiful facial features or sigh as I watched him when he chewed on the skin over his pointer finger’s knuckle out of random habit. He gave me the tingly feelings inside my stomach and they would stay there for hours on end.

I still thought about what Niall said earlier and I felt a small crack begin to form in my wall built up to keep Harry Styles out of my heart.

Harry’s POV:

“Charlie?! Seriously, love, it shouldn’t take this long to get ready.” I tap my foot impatiently as I sit on Charlie’s bed and wait for her to come out of the bathroom.

“You told me to look nice, so I’m looking nice!” I chuckle as I hear the irritation rise in her voice. I loved when I could push her buttons a little bit because she was so sexy when she was angry. I walk over to the mirror and fix my tie before running my fingers through my mess of curls. Sometimes, I really hated having curly hair because they always seemed to be falling out of place.

I sit back down on the bed and think about the amazing day Charlie and I spent together. We visited Chinatown, the Empire State Building and had lunch in Central Park. It was a perfect day. And I had surprised Charlie at the end of lunch with an invitation to a benefit dinner being held at the Met. Jeremy called me earlier and requested that I make an appearance and I immediately said yes, knowing that I would be able to take a “date”. I asked if it was appropriate that I take Charlie to the event and thankfully he didn’t frown upon the idea.

When I had asked Charlie if she would accompany me, she immediately said yes and was giddy with excitement the entire day. Because it was a formal dinner, it required us to go shopping for a gown for Charlie, which she had no problem with. Sadly, she hasn’t let me see it yet, saying that she wanted it to be a surprise.

As I waited for her to finish getting ready, I couldn’t help but think about the perfect timing of this event. It allowed Charlie and I some alone time, but out in public so it didn’t look like an actual date. I didn’t want her to get the wrong impression, but at the same time I’d hope this night would help me try to win her over. I was crossing my fingers that it goes well.

“Alright! I’m ready!” I perked up from the bed and my jaw dropped to the floor as she walked out of the bathroom. I could barely keep myself from drooling on my jacket lapels as I take in the magnificent figure in front of me.

She was wearing a floor length, electric blue silk gown, tailored to fit snug against her curves. The neckline cut straight across her collarbones, accentuating her amazing shoulders. She twirled around and I felt a familiar tingling beneath my trousers as I gazed over an extremely deep scoop back, the fabric settling just above her perfect bum. I gulped as I thought about how difficult it was going to be keeping my hands to myself tonight.

“So? What do you think? Pretty good, huh?” She shrugged as she put her hands on her hips. I looked into her eyes, smoked out with brown shadow, and could barely put together a sentence.

“You, uh, you’re..that dress..wow.” She laughed and blushed as she dropped her head to stare at her new platform pumps.

“I’m going to take that as a ‘Charlie, you look very nice tonight’ and I will say thank you back to that.” I nod and blink my eyes a few times, making sure this isn’t a dream.

“More than very nice, you look absolutely stunning.” I gather my bearings as the boys come barging in the room. They all have looks on their faces similar to mine a few minutes ago.

“Wow! Charlie, you look incredible!” Niall exclaims as he gives her a big hug. Liam and Zayn follow suit.

“I agree! I can’t believe you’re wasting this look on a goof like him.” Louis jabs his thumb at me and I glare at him as Charlie laughs.

“Alright, alright, enough. Charlie and I have a dinner to get to. You children have fun tonight.” I walk past them and hold the door open for Charlie.

“Coming from the mouth of the youngest person in the room.” Zayn yells and the boys roll with laughter. I shut the door loudly and turn to face the beauty next to me. I reach my arm out and she links her own with mine as we walk towards the lift.

“We’re going out the back entrance in case the paparazzi are out front, which I’m assuming they are.” She nods as the doors open to the lobby. Charlie’s heels click on the floor as we make our way to the back. I open the heavy door and see a black town car waiting directly in front of the door.

“After you, love.” I say as I motion to the car door opened by the driver. She blushes and picks her dress up before scooting over the leather seats. I close the door behind me and we make our way to the Met. I glance over at Charlie as she leans up next to the tinted window to look at the scenery passing us by. The bright lights of the city bounce off her perfect face and I can’t help but smile as I take in the view. She notices I have begun to stare and turns to look at me.

“I’m really excited for tonight. Thank you for inviting me.” She beams and my heart melts.

“It’s my pleasure. These dinners tend to be quite boring, so it’s going to be nice to have someone there that’s my age to talk to.” I sigh as I think about all the events and galas I’ve went to and how my face hurt after fake smiling the entire night. I felt like this time would be different, because I would have a gorgeous brunette to keep me company.

“I have something for you.” She looks at me curiously and I hear her gasp as I pull out the long aqua colored Tiffany & Co. box.

“Harry..” Her hands go to cover her mouth as I open the box and show her the diamond bracelet I picked up when she was trying on gowns today.

“Don’t say anything. It’s a congratulatory/thank you gift for being able to put up with the five of us headaches for the past few weeks.” I smile as one of her hands reach down to touch the stones. I joke with her and clamp the box shut, pulling a Pretty Woman. She jumps and laughs and I open it back up, unlatching it from its resting spot. She gives me her shaking hand and I clasp the shimmering bracelet on her elegant wrist. She lifts it up to her face, gawking at the delicate chain and her eyes lock onto mine.

“It’s beautiful. Thank you.” She breathes and I smile before sitting back in my seat. A few silent minutes go by as she’s admiring her new gift.

“I just want to warn you before we arrive that there are going to be cameras outside, so your face will most likely be in a picture or two in tomorrow’s paper.” She looks up from her wrist and nods as I continue.

“And when they start to yell questions at you, don’t answer them. They’ll leave you alone once we get inside.” I place my big hand around her dainty one, rubbing my thumb over her cold knuckles. As she turns to look back outside, the beam of a street light hits her diamond earrings, sending thousands of tiny rainbows around the back of the car. We laugh as she shakes her head back and forth in the light, causing a disco ball effect.

The car pulls up behind a line of similar looking vehicles and we slowly creep up to the front entrance. I feel her hand start to jitter underneath mine and I squeeze it once more as the driver puts the car in park and jogs around to open my door. I look at her anxious face and give her a heartfelt smile.

“You’ll be fine. Just stay close to me. And smile that beautiful smile I know you have.” She nods nervously as the doors open, releasing the flurry of camera flashes and chaotic shouting.

///

Charlie’s POV:

I’m blinded by the quick flashing of cameras as Harry and I make our way towards the large building, lit up with various colored spotlights. I let out a small squeak as I feel a warm palm placed against my lower back, urging me to go forward. I realize that the hand belongs to Harry as I feel his thumb rub gently on my bare skin. I look up at him and he gives me a big dimpled grin as we continue to walk.

The paparazzi are yelling his name, asking him what he’s wearing and the latest rumors about him and some Australian model. It’s so amazing watching how calm he stays in front of the cameras. He just smiles and waves at them, not really paying any attention to anything they’re screaming at him.

“Harry! Harry! Who is the lovely lady?” I start to feel myself blush as I look at the balding man who just shouted at Harry.

“Hon! Honey, what’s your name? What’s your involvement with Harry Styles? Are you two dating?” I’m about to open my mouth to answer, but then I remember what Harry said to me and I just smile and wave. I feel Harry lean in to me and whisper ‘good job’ in my ear, causing me to giggle.

We finally make it inside and the noise level dies down by a large margin. I’m taken away by the beautiful scenery in front of us. Large sculptures are placed randomly in the beautiful open area. Elegantly decorated tables are scattered throughout the room, and after Harry speaks with a server, we walk over to our table. Three other couples, all in their mid-fifties, are already seated at our table and give us polite smiles. As the waiters bring the champagne around to the tables, I lean to Harry and whisper in his ear.

“So, what is this dinner for?”

“It benefits the arts in the New York school system.” I nod and look around the room, noticing that we were probably the youngest people attending.

“Does it ever weird you out that you’re the youngest person at these things?” He laughs and takes a sip of champagne.

“Yes, but I find ways of making things fun. I have a couple games I play to pass the time.” I perk up and lean in so he can tell me.

“Well, one of the most entertaining things to do is to scope out the most hideous outfits.” I laugh out loud, causing us the get a few stares from our fellow table mates. We spend the next fifteen minutes pointing out the worst dressed people in the room while we wait for the dinner to start. Once the plates are set out, I focus my attention on the food. I didn’t realize how hungry I was until I hear Harry start to laugh as I drag my bread along my plate to sop up the glaze leftover from some chicken concoction.

Once dinner is over, a couple people give very long speeches about the reason why we, the attendees, should donate to the cause. After the speeches, the Emcee announces that the guests are allowed to roam around the museum or enjoy the musical entertainment provided. Harry and I sit and talk for a while before he stands up and reaches down to me.

“Dance with me?” I smile and put my hand in his and he leads me towards the mass of people gathered around a band consisting of a grand piano and a string bass player. Harry twirls me around before pulling me close to his chest, resting his hand on the familiar place of my lower back as he rocks me slowly back and forth.

“So, Mr. Styles, you give coloring books to little girls, you contribute to the bettering of the arts for local schools. Is there anything you don’t do?” My insides start to tingle as I hear a raspy chuckle escape his lips.

“I’ve never birthed a baby giraffe before.” I lean back and give him a weird look and he busts out in laughter before bringing me to his chest again. I feel my whole body shiver when he moves in close to whisper in my ear.

“One thing I can check off my list tonight is dancing with a beautiful woman in a blue dress.” I smile and bite my lip as he pulls back to look into my eyes. My legs quiver as his green eyes pierce into mine.

“You are so amazing, Charlie. The most beautiful person I have ever met, inside and out.” My mouth opens slightly as I take in his compliment. Thankfully he doesn’t give me time to answer before his head leans down to rest against mine. We dance in silence for a few songs before I hear him speak up.

“I’m ready to head back to the hotel. What do you say?” I look up and nod. He takes me by surprise as he lifts my hand up to his mouth, plump lips gently graze my knuckles.

“Thank you for the dance, Miss Cadigan.” Shit. That was singlehandedly the sexiest thing I’ve ever witnessed. I shake off my thoughts while we walk towards the front entrance. Our drive back to the hotel is short and before I know it we’re right outside my door. Harry shifts from one foot to the other as we stand in the hallway.

“I had a great time tonight, Harry. I honestly can’t thank you enough for everything. Especially this.” I point to my new bracelet and he shrugs his shoulders.

“Eh, it’s nothing. You deserve it.” We stand there for a few seconds before he speaks again.

“Well, I guess this is goodnight. I’ll see you tomorrow morning.” I smile and nod. He comes in for a hug and I wrap my arms tightly around his neck while I feel his snake around my waist. We stand there for a long time, enjoying the feel of each other’s bodies so close to our own. When he we finally pull away, I look up into his eyes and my heart starts to beat fast. Without reason, my gaze wanders down to his perfect lips and I get an incredible urge to kiss him.

My breathing stops as I lean in, my heart taking full control of my body. I close my eyes when I see him dip his head close to mine and my core warms as our lips connect. It feels like fireworks are exploding in my stomach as my lips are locked with his. I pull back and lick my lips before starting to feel the anxiety rise in my chest. I step back swiftly.

“I’m so sorry. Oh my goodness, I’m sorry. I..I have to go.” And before Harry can even answer back, I open the door and shut it quickly in his face. I lean back hard against the door and cover my face with my hands. What did I just do?

I let out a long sigh as I walk over to my dresser and pull out my pajamas. I slip my pumps off and shuffle to the bathroom where I change and wash off my makeup. After I’m scrubbed and comfortable, I draw back the covers on my bed and snuggle deep underneath the heavy blankets.

Although I’m exhausted from the busy day, my mind is racing at 1000 miles a minute, thinking about what I had just done. I look down at the shimmering bracelet on my wrist while I think. I can’t believe I just kissed Harry again. It just felt right with the moment and after our beautiful night out. I couldn’t resist!

But I knew in my mind that it was wrong. I just needed to talk to him tomorrow when I’m not as worked up about it. He must understand the circumstances. It was just the heat of the moment, that’s all. The heat of the moment. Yeah.

Right?
