Out of the Darkness
Capture
The next morning I wake, for the second time in three days, to the feeling of strong arms securely wrapped around me. I sigh in content. When I’m in Harry’s arms I feel so safe, so protected. He helps me forget all of the troubles I have had in my past, and focus more on the present.
I glance at the clock. 11 AM. We overslept. I know that it is time to get up and face the day, but I can’t bring myself to do it. My stomach hurts a bit anyways, and I feel exhausted despite my lie-in this morning. I sigh and cuddle closer into Harry’s embrace, ignoring the signals I’m getting from my full bladder. Harry’s warm breath tickles the top of my head as he sleeps peacefully.
I smile as I think about the kiss we shared last night. Harry was so gentle with me, so sweet, and he didn’t push me past my limits. It was my first real kiss, and I know it meant a lot to both of us. I slowly trace my fingertips over Harry's tattoos, humming to myself, perfectly content.
My happy thoughts are interrupted by the door being thrown open without a warning knock. I freeze for a second before realizing that it’s just Zayn. He pauses taking in the scene; me and Harry cuddling on the bed, my hair messy and wild. I blush when I realize that Harry is shirtless, and what this must look like to Zayn.
“Um, am I interrupting something?” He asks me, with a suggestive grin. I can’t help but giggle as he waggles his eyebrows up and down.
“No Zayn, come on in. I had a nightmare last night, and just needed someone to comfort me.” I explain, my face becoming even more hot. As I speak Harry stirs, and slowly opens his eyes, blinking at Zayn.
“What do you want Zayn?” He groans, drawing me closer to his bare chest and burying his head into my hair as Zayn walks over to the window and pulls up the blinds. Bright light pours into the room, and Harry and I both whine in protest.
“Well, Paul just called, and I’ve been sent to let you know that they have Sam’s attacker and brother in custody, and you two need to get dressed because we are all going down to the station,” Says Zayn in one long sentence. Harry tenses, and he draws a sharp breath.
“I’m going to kill those motherfuckers,” he murmurs under his breath. I don’t know if he meant for me to hear his words, but his over protectiveness is downright sexy.
On the ride to the station Harry and I sit next to each other in the car. I am beginning to feel very nervous about facing the two people who have haunted my dreams for so many years. Harry senses my anxiety, and draws tiny circles in my hand which he holds firmly in his.
By the time we arrive at the police station, Harry is the only thing keeping me from passing out. I am still weak from being in my coma, and I feel very hot and sweaty. The anxiety isn’t helping my stomach ache.
Once inside, we are immediately greeted by Pamela, and she leads us into the conference room. She asks us all to sit, and once we do she pulls out two file folders and sets them on the table.
“Okay, before I show you these pictures, I will remind you all to keep an open mind. These may not be Samantha’s actual attackers, and in the eyes of the United States of America they are innocent until proven guilty.” Pamela says in a monotone voice. I have a feeling that she is required to give that little speech every time she presents pictures of possible criminals.
She opens the first folder. I breathe in sharply as I recognize my brother’s face on the mugshot. Reid has changed a lot over the years. He now looks worn out and tired. He has tattoos all over his muscular neck and arms, and a piercing in his right ear. He looks downright scary.
All sets of eyes are on me, analyzing my reaction to this picture. I slowly nod my head up and down, confirming that they have caught the right man.
“That’s Reid,” I say, my voice breaking a bit.
“You’re sure?” Asks Pamela, inquisitively
“Positive,” I say, my voice more confident. Pamela nods before moving on to the second folder. This one she flips open and I start to tremble as I see the black and white photo of the person whom I fear the most. Everyone in the room is tense, as I stare at the second photo.
“That’s him,” I whisper before the waterworks start up, and tears track their way down my cheeks. Harry pulls me towards himself in a tight side hug.
“It’s over Sam, you’re safe. They can’t touch you now.” He murmurs into my ear. I take a deep breath, and nod, wiping my tears. He’s right. I’m safe, those two men who have been the source of so much misery are finally going to get what they deserve. My stomach ache has gone away, and relief has taken its place.
“Do I have to see them in person?” I ask Pamela, my voice still somewhat shaky, dreading her answer.
“Not unless you want to darling,” She responds with a genuine sad smile. “Your court date is in twelve days, on the first of August. You will be visited by a lawyer, and I am going to give them the recordings that I made when you came here the other day to tell us about the night of the concert. Your brother’s apartment has been searched, and it turns out that your attacker was also living there. They seem to have been planning their attack for a while now.” Informs Pamela.
“Excuse me, but would you be able to tell us how you found these men?” Asks Louis, ever the gentleman.
“Well, using the description that Samantha here gave us of her brother, all the police had to do was search through our archives for a man named Reid Jevrin who had a similar description.” Pamela states.
“It turns out that he had been arrested previously a few times for possessing and selling illegal drugs, so the police already had an eye on him and knew where he lived. They raided his house yesterday at 10 PM, and put both him and his friend Matthew Palmens - Samantha's attacker - under arrest,” She finishes. The room is silent for a few moments as we take this in.
“So what now?” Asks Niall, breaking the silence.
“Now you can go home and relax, all of you,” Pamela says warmly. “The lawyer will be in contact with Paul, but he won’t be contacting any of you directly for a few more days. I suggest you have some fun while you can before you have to face the courtrooms. They can be a real bore.” She jokes with a smile.
We all laugh and thank Pamela for all she has done. By the time I leave the station hand in hand with Harry, my tears have dried, and my spirits are higher than they have been in a long, long time.
