Fake, Stupid Love

The Twenty-Third

"You two shopping for prom as well?" Suzie asked, flashing a tiny white smile.

I couldn't seem to utter out any words, so Jen answered for me, following with an introduction of herself. How had we managed to run into her? Not that it was bad, but I would prefer to not let her position above me ruin my day.

"That looks like it was made for you!" she suddenly gasped, noticing the dress.

"Really?" I asked, flattered by the comment. I might not have been particularily in love with the girl, but you can't hate her.

"Definitely! Were you planning to get that one?"

"Yes, actually. Just made the decision before you walked in." Jen smiled, proud of her find.

"Lovely! Can I ask you a favor?"

"Sure."

"Would you mind waiting to let me know how this dress looks? I really like it, but I can't seem to tell if it's just right."

"Of course, it looks very nice." I commented, seeing the light blue color drape over her arm.

"Thank you! I promise I won't take long." she scurried in the tiny room, and we heard clicks and clanks until the door opened back up again. The dress made her look like she stepped out of a fairytale book, shimmering and shining with every sudden movement. It was princessy, and she wore it very well.

"What on earth were you doubting about that dress? It's perfect!" I questioned, eyes wide open in awe and confusion.

"Well... my mother told me I can only wear certain shades of colors because of how fair my skin is. She says I always look 'washed out' and said this dress didn't do me justice." she looked a little disappointed, but then lit up again at the thought of us loving it.

"No, don't listen to her. You look amazing." I insisted, still not being able to take my eyes off of her. She could be a model, why was she self-conscious?

"Thank you! I will buy this one then." she smiled, but frowned again.

"Hey, would you mind if I tagged along with you two while you finish shopping? I don't know the least about what makeup suits me and how much jewelry is too much and what have you." she bit her lip, looking guilty for whatever reason.

"Yeah, please do! We can always use another opinion, too." I smiled, happy to help.

"Great! I'll be right out!" she bounced back into the room to get out of the dress.

While we were waiting, Jen started to whisper.

"I'm surprised you're so open to this idea. I'm surprised you speak to her at all."

"Well, she's nice. And I don't think she really knows that Zayn was dating me. I mean, she knows he dated a girl recently, but I don't think she's knows that it's me. Even if she did, I can't see her being mean to anyone, let alone an ex." I shrugged. Before Jen could answer, Suzie popped out of the dressing room and we went to pay for the dresses.

The rest of the day went over better than planned, actually. Suzie really was a nice girl, and I dared to consider her a new friend. The decision was already made for me, though, when Jen invited the both of us over to spend the night. We agreed, and got to know each other even more.

Outside of school, Suzie was all she seemed to be. She wasn't one person in front of Zayn, and another with someone else. She was genuine, and quite a darling. We each introduced ourselves more fully, and even told some so called "secrets" that we had. A typical sleepover was all it was, but we enjoyed every minute.

"Aaaaand... done!" Jen exclaimed, dabbing the last bit of lipgloss on my lips. She had been working on my look for what seemed like days, and finally prom was creeping up on us, just hours away.

"I want to look, but I want to keep it a mystery too!" I squealed, excited to see how I looked. She quickly helped me up and got me over to a mirror. It took me a few tries before I even recogized myself. The dress hugged what figure I had, showing some more skin than I usually did (not that that's saying much, I always wore long pants and t-shirts). My hair was neatly curled, and certain parts were pinned up to show off my face, which was a makeup masterpiece. Jen had done my makeup completely different than I usually did, in a good way, and I felt like a beauty queen for some moments.

"Well? How you you like it?"

"It's incredible! How did you do that?"

"Makeup can do a lot. I didn't use too much though, that's all you, gorgeous!" she smirked, patting me on the shoulder before packing the makeup back up in the bag. She was all ready herself, with a classy silvery dress on. It was like a shorter version of Suzie's, just a little different here and there.

"What do you say we hit the road and show the school who's who?" she stood tall, hands on her hips.

With a quick agree and nod, we were off to what may or may not have been the best night of our lives.
