Popular Page
Unless you're one of the creators on this site, knowing how the popular page works is basically a mystery -- even to me. However, after spending several years consisting of many hours unregrettably wasting my life away on this site I've developed a sense for how it is probably coded to run.
When you think popular, you probably think of tons of comments, rates, views, etc, but sometimes you'll see stories with very few statistics and not of the best quality for what you would think is popular on there. How? Well, the popular page runs off a combination of said statistics but I've also noticed that stories who update more often, especially those who update daily or twice daily, can find their way on the popular page. The same can go for the opposite. Even though a story is really great and has good stats, that story might not update as often so it may never manage to get on the popular page. In a sense, the popular page runs on a combo of all statistics on your story as well as how often you update.
Don't be upset if your story doesn't make the popular page though. It is in in my most optimistic opinion that you shouldn't ever worry about popularity. Be proud of your stories, especially if writing is something that you love to do.
Notes
Again, I don't actually know how it works but this is just my theory based off of many accumulativehours of observation. You seriously don't have to take my word for anything.
