Little Misunderstandings [Sequel to Little Steps]

Chapter Eight

I woke up with Colette and Nate piled on top of me. Of course no one was on Niall. Just as I registered what a bad morning this already was, I realized something.

We were going to Disneyland today. I grinned and rubbed my eyes, clearing away my sleepiness. Carefully I picked Nicolette up and placed her on the bed, along with Nate. Niall groaned softly and opened his eyes.

“Are you okay?” he asked, reaching out for me. Oh, his morning voice.

“Yeah,” I nodded, standing up. “We’re going to Disneyland today.”

Niall grinned and sat up slowly, careful not to wake the kids. “Well, someone’s excited.”

“Of course I am,” I laughed, walking around the bed to his side. I stood in between his legs and wrapped my arms around his neck. He placed his hands on my waist and kissed my shoulder, making his way up to my neck. I let out a soft moan and my knees turned to jelly instantly. Niall caught me and sat me down on his lap.

“You’re extremely cute in the morning,” he spoke to himself. I gave him a strange look.

“I’m not cute afterwards?”

“Nah, then you’re just gorgeous.”

“Good to know,” I smirked, ruffling his hair the way he hates it before walking into the bathroom. He followed me in and grabbed his toothbrush from the toiletry bag. I took my toothbrush as well. He squirted some toothpaste onto my toothbrush and then onto his before setting the tube down to brush his teeth.

I never really liked brushing my teeth with Niall because he always made funny faces while he brushed his teeth, making me crack up and spit toothpaste all over the mirror. And Niall was doing just that.

He stuck out his tongue and flared his nostrils, crossing his eyes and brushed his teeth like it was the most normal face in the world. At one point he started wiggling his tongue and I was just in time to lean over into the sink, so the tooth paste I spit out didn’t end up on the mirror.

“Ahaha,” Niall laughed, spitting out his toothpaste. “Told you you’re cute.”

“Shut up,” I groaned ,slapping his shoulder.

After we had both showered, we woke Nate and Nicolette up. Nicolette was like Zayn when it came to being woken up. She hated anyone who interrupted her sleep. I left Niall to deal with her. After filling up the tub with water, I picked up a half asleep Nate and undressed him, placing him in the tub.

“Where’s my duck?” he asked, nodding off.

“Wait right here,” I ordered, running out of the bathroom to get his rubber duck from his small suitcase. I brought it back into the bathroom and handed it to him. Nate slowly began to wake up as I sang Baby Einstein songs with him. He pretended that his rubber ducky was a superhero swimming through the water and began totally unaware off the fact that he was taking a bath. I loved his little imagination.

Once Nate had finished his bath, I wrapped him up in a towel and brought him back into the hotel room. Niall was failing to get Nicolette up so I told him to dress Nate. I tiptoed over to the bed and scooped Nicolette up in my arms. She screamed, causing me to clap a hand over her mouth.

“Nicolette!”I scolded, looking at her with a disappointed face. She looked down and pouted. I rolled my eyes and brought her to the bathroom. After giving her a bath, which consisted on her splashing me endless times to piss me off, I gave her to Niall to dress.

Honestly, she was a hilarious kid.

And she pooped me out.

After all of us were dressed, Niall picked up Nate while I held Nicolette’s hand, and we left our room. Breakfast was a disaster, with Nicolette throwing eggs at me because of how I had picked her up earlier in the morning. Niall begged her to stop, but she didn’t. Eventually I moved to a different table with Nate.

Long story short, Niall became her target.

Two hours later, Nicolette was tugging on Niall’s shirt, pointing at the Mad Tea Party ride in Disneyland.

“Let’s go daddy!” she pestered, pulling him. Niall was tripping over his feet as he struggled to slow Colette down. I laughed and closed my hand around Nate’s. He was looking around, being the observant kid he was. His eyes were wide, and every time someone looked at him, he looked away. He wasn’t a people person, that’s for sure.

“Nicolette!” I heard Niall yell. Niall had picked her up, only for her to start wiggling around in her arms. She was gaining attention from people walking by. Groups of people were staring at Niall with wide eyes. They had recognized him. Ugh, Nicolette.

I felt people’s eyes on me as well. Nate tugged on my shirt, making me look down.

“You okay, babe?” I sighed, continuing towards Niall and Nicolette.

“There’s people staring, mum.” He looked genuinely frightened. I couldn’t just shoot people dirty looks or it would be all over magazine covers the next day. I picked Nate up and carried him over to Niall and Nicolette.

“Nicolette Alice Horan,” I gained her attention sternly. I think even Niall looked a little scared. “Stop this immediately or we are going straight home.”

And just like that, she stopped.

“You’re amazing,” Niall laughed quietly, setting Nicolette down with a warning look. I winked at him and then looked up. A small crowd of people was building up around us. Nate grabbed my hand and squeezed it tightly.

“Dammit,” Niall sighed under his breath. “Just wanted one goddamn day with my family.”

“It’s alright, Ni.” I whispered.

Fans started to come up and ask him for autographs. It hurt when some gave me and my children dirty looks. However, some even wanted pictures with Nate and Colette. Niall and I kindly refused. Still, I knew there were probably paparazzi taking pictures of us right now. I just wanted my kids to have a normal life, you know, not be on the covers of gossip magazines.

Nate covered his ears and frowned when some girls screamed. I felt so bad for him. Nicolette however, was loving the attention. She grinned at the girls who smiled at her, and stuck her tongue out at the ones who ignored her. Niall handled the fans pretty well, smiling and taking pictures with them. Pretty soon though, the park security came to the rescue and managed to get rid of most of the fans. Niall looked relieved.

“Mum, why were there so many girls?” Nate whispered, clinging onto me. Nicolette and Nate still hadn’t fully grasped the concept that Niall was famous. It’s funny, because they know Niall has concerts to sing in, but they don’t understand he is famous.

Little kids have confusing minds.

I’m so, so sorry.” Niall rushed, coming back to us. He placed a soft kiss on my lips and then picked Nate up. “Let’s go.”

Nicolette smiled, and calmly this time, lead us to the line for the Mad Tea Party ride. We stood in the amazingly short line for less the five minutes. Thank god, because Nicolette was getting impatient.

“Let’s sit in the pink cup,” Nicolette yelled, pointing to the pink teacup.

“No,” Niall argued. “I want to sit in the blue one.”

I shot Niall a disgusted look, signaling him to stop acting like a kid. We seated ourselves in the empty pink teacup and waited until the other people in line had taken a seat. Soon, the soundtrack from Alice in Wonderland started playing and our teacup jerked forward. Nicolette squealed happily and Nate eagerly put his hands on the edge of the cup. Ours bodies jerked a little when our cup hit another lightly, moving us away. Nicolette laughed and waved to some little boy. He waved back. I don’t think Nicolette would ever listen if I told her not to talk to strangers.

After being bumped around in teacups for ten minutes straight, we got off the ride. Nicolette wanted to go again while Nate on the other hand, looked kind of bored.

“Hey, Nate,” I whispered, leaning down to meet his gaze. “Wanna go on that roller coaster?” I pointed to the Splash Mountain roller coaster. A small grin grew on Nate’s face.

“It looks fun,” he laughed lightly. “Do daddy and Colette want to go?”

I loved how considerate of others my son was. I hoped he would stay that way forever.

“Nicolette,” I called, gaining her attention. Niall looked up too. “Do you want to go on Splash Mountain?”

“Is there water?” she tested, rocking back and forth on her feet.

“Yeah,” I nodded, smiling at her quirkiness.

“Okay,” she nodded, grabbing Niall’s hand. “Let’s go daddy.”

Nate and Nicolette lead us eagerly towards the line for Splash Mountain. We arrived at the entrance to the line and Niall and I quickly realized that our kids weren’t tall enough to get on the ride. We explained that to Nicolette, and I silently prayed she wouldn’t throw a fit. Thank god she didn’t. She just asked if we could go to the Bibidi Bobidi Boutique.

“No! I’m not going there!” Nate refused, his eyes widening when Nicolette mentioned the pretty princess dresses.

“Hey, how about Nate and I go on some other rides and mum can take Nicolette to Cinderella’s palace?” Niall suggested. My heart fluttered a little when he called me “mum” to my children. I don’t know why. It just did.

“Yeah. It’s just not going into the castle.” Nate agreed.

“Alright.” Niall captured my lips in his from a short, soft kiss. “Meet me back by Splash Mountain when you’re done.”

We parted ways afterward.

It was a long walk to Cinderella’s castle, but when we got there, Nicolette was still full of energy. A pretty young teenage girl, about nineteen or so, led us into the boutique. I think she recognized me as Niall’s wife, because she was sort of stumbling over her words. The boutique looked absolutely beautiful. There were pink and purple lights provided light from the large room. Load of other small girls were getting their hair down. They were all dressed in cute princess dresses. Some wore Alice in Wonderland costumes, and two little girls sitting beside each other were dressed as Tweedle-Dee and Tweedle-Dum.

The young lady sat Nicolette down in a high chair in front of a large mirror. Nicolette was astonished at the lights shining on her face.

“So, what character do you want to be?” the lady asked Nicolette. “We’ve got all the princesses, the Tweedle twins, the Mad Hatter-“

“The Mad Hatter!” Nicolette exclaimed, her eyes bright. The young lady laughed.

I sat down in a empty seat and watched as another hairdresser came and got to work. They split Nicolette’s hair into sections and began curling wild but surprisingly cute curls with Colette’s hair. Nicolette sat patiently watching her mini transformation in the large mirror in front of her. She looked so happy, it melted me heart. The ladies applied a few products to apply more volume and keep the curls in.

“You missed a spot,” Nicolette giggled, holding up a lock of hair that was still straight.

“Whoops,” the young lady blushed, taking the lock and twining it into the curling wand. The other lady got started on Nicolette’s makeup. I wasn’t very fond of having makeup on my nearly four year old daughter, but decided against not allowing it. It was just for one day. The makeup lady thankfully applied the makeup lightly. She added some blush to Nicolette’s cheeks and before that, a bit of foundation. She added sparkly eye shadow to Nicolette’s eyelids and smiled proudly. I agreed that Nicolette looked amazing.

The lady who had originally greeted us led us to a separate room full of costumes neatly done on hangers. She studied Nicolette, specifically her clothes size, and then grabbed a costume bag from a shelf.

“Try this on,” she told Nicolette. “I think it’ll look beautiful on you.”

Nicolette took the bag and we followed the lady to the dressing rooms. I helped Nicolette get changed into the costume. The costume bag contained a furry coat like top along with a graphic pink and black shirt underneath. Also included were red tights, white leg warmers, a frilly pink shirt and red boots. There was a small hat accessory as the Mad Hatter’s hat.

Once it was all on Nicolette, I led her out of the waiting room. The lady grinned widely when she saw Nicolette.

“She looks adorable,” the lady grinned.

“Doesn’t she?” I laughed. Nicolette posed for us. She really did look cute. I pulled out my phone and snapped a few pictures of her.

After making the payment at the register, Nicolette and I made our way out of the castle. People gave her double takes. I wasn’t going to deny it, my daughter was pretty. But I didn’t like people staring at her.

“Do I look like the Mad Hatter?” Nicolette asked, tugging on my shirt as we walked back to Splash Mountain.

“You look exactly like him.” I told her honestly. She really did, but she was more adorable version. Nicolette grinned happily. When we got the Splash Mountain, Niall and Nate were waiting for us.

“Where’s my Colette?” Niall joked, looking around as if Nicolette wasn’t there.

“Right here daddy!” she giggled.

“No,” Niall shook his head. “If I’m not mistaken, you’re the Mad Hatter!”

“Nuh uh,” Nicolette placed her hands on her hips. “It’s me, Nicolette.”

Niall laughed and smiled down at her. “I know.” He bent down and kissed her cheek. “You look beautiful.”

“Yeah, you look pretty,” Nate added in. He smiled shortly and turned away.

“So, who’s up for some lunch?” Niall asked while I looked curiously at Nate. He looked really distant. I’d have to ask Niall about that later.

“I am,” Nate turned to Niall with a small smile.

“Me too,” Nicolette yelled, sticking her hand up. Niall took Nicolette’s hand and I grabbed Nate’s and together we made our way to a restaurant called Carnation Café. As we neared the restaurant, a certain someone caught my eye, causing me to gasp drop Nate’s hand.

Oh my god.
