Little Misunderstandings [Sequel to Little Steps]
Chapter One
“Come catch me!”
“Brat,” I muttered, shooting Niall a look. He looked back and groaned, then stood up and turned towards the stairs.
“Here’s comes the cookie monster!” Then he turned back to me and smirked. “You owe me.”
He ran off and charged upstairs.
I heard Nicolette screaming, followed by giggles. He was probably tickling her now. And then I realized, I probably should have went up there myself. Niall would most likely get the cookies from Nicolette and then eat them all himself.
I had a very annoying family.
But I couldn’t love them more.
“Mum, look at my picture.” Nathan grinned, skipping into the kitchen. Oh my god. He drew a picture of our family, and I looked like a hideous penguin. Or at least, I think those were humans.
“That’s great sweety.” I cooed, bending down to kiss his hair. He cheered and ran out of the kitchen.
Almost four months after I got married to Niall, I had gotten pregnant with the best kids in the world. Niall and I argued so much over what their names would be, but we finally settled on Nicolette and Nathan. They were both three years old, as could be the sweetest kids and the biggest pains.
Nicolette was the really obnoxious one. She loved food, and was always stealing stuff out of the kitchen. One morning, I was making breakfast and discovered all the eggs were missing, only to see that Nicolette had stolen them and cracked the whole dozen all over the garage floor.
Let’s just say the garage smelled terrible for a whole month.
Nathan was the more quiet one. He was really sweet, and had an obsession with drawing and wished for paint and coloring books every single Christmas. Every single Christmas. Niall tried to show him how to play video games, but he wasn’t interested. I guess that was okay.
Niall re-entered the kitchen holding Nicolette and the cookie jar in his hands. He set Nicolette down and she began jumping up and down, trying to reach the cookie jar from Niall.
“Mum, tell him to give me the cookies.” She whined.
“Niall, give her one.” I sighed, then turned away to cut up the carrots. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Niall give Nicolette two cookies. Not one. Two. He was just as bad as his children.
Nicolette snuck off and Niall tapped my shoulder. I turned around and set down the knife.
“I’m trying to make lunch, Niall.” I groaned. “What do you want?”
He frowned, then kissed me. I gave in eventually and kissed him back, but it wasn’t long before we heard snickers coming from the corner.
As soon as we spotted them, Nate and Nicolette cracked up.
“Mum and Dad are gross.” Nicolette said to Nate. He nodded in agreement.
“Go play with your toys,” I laughed, pushing Niall away as well. He shooed them out of the kitchen, following after them.
Once lunch was ready, I called the three of them to the table. Niall raced in, followed by Nicolette and Nate followed afterward.
“I call the carrots!” Nicolette yelled, climbing into her seat.
“I call the beans!” Nate added loudly.
Niall laughed and tucked the cloth napkins into their shirts so their clothing wouldn’t get messed up while they ate.
Niall sat beside Nicolette and helped her hold the fork, while Nate had picked that up long ago. He dug in, mainly at the beans.
Once Nicolette got a good grip on how to use a fork, Niall began eating.
We made small talk, while Nicolette annoyed Nate all through dinner by kicking him constantly under the table. Niall eventually told her to stop or she wouldn’t get ice cream for a week.
Little kids are so gullible.
After lunch, Nicolette and Nate fell asleep on the sofa, watching Cat in the Hat Knows Alot About That. Niall and I carried them up to their rooms and then went to our room for alone time.
“Nicolette is such a pain in the arse.” He laughed, but I knew he meant well. Or else I would’ve slapped him.
“And Nate is the complete opposite.”
“There is no resemblance between them personality wise, what-so ever.” Niall added, wrapping his arm around my shoulder.
“Nate showed me a picture of our family.”
Niall looked at me, his expression knowing. “He showed it to me as well.” Then Niall shrugged. “I mean, he’s a better artist than I’ll ever be.”
“I wonder if Nate is ever going to like video games, and if Nicolette will ever learn how to be quiet.”
“Probably not.”
“But I’ll love them anyway.”
He smiled. “So will I.”
