It Takes Patience II: Guarded

Chapter 38: Secret Subtleties

*Reagan’s POV*
Harry told me that he would be here soon to pick me up, but it’s already been twenty minutes and he still isn’t here yet. I stepped out of the building to see if maybe I could catch him when he was pulling up, but he was nowhere to be seen. Only students and professors pulled into the parking lot walking or jogging briskly into the lecture hall building to get in from the cold air and the chill of the October wind. I wrap my arms tightly around my chest and turn to go back into the building as Peyton is walking out, talking with Dr. Adams as they get closer. I turn around to escape outside quickly trying to avoid being seen, but it was too late. Peyton always seems to see me or find me somewhere. He calls my name just as he gets outside.

“Reagan, I thought you’d be gone by now. Have you made up your mind about joining Laurie and I for a drink later on tonight? I promise it’s just to break the ice that’s built up between us all.”

That’s the part that I’m confused about. Just yesterday Peyton was going to show me evidence to try and cover his story about Laurie being the one who turned me and H. in when I was interning at Maudsley, and now he’s going out for friendly cocktails with her? My face contorts and before I can answer him a taxi pulls up to the curb. Peyton takes a step towards it and opens the door before he turns back to me.

“You can hop in the cab with me if you’d like, seeing as how your ride is more than a little bit late today.”

“He’s on his way, I’ll wait for him. You go ahead.” It bothered me that Harry wasn’t here yet and that I haven’t heard from him and I do want to get back to the hotel or Harry’s house even so we can finish our conversation from earlier today, but not if it means that I have to be in another enclosed space with Peyton. He got too close for my liking today.

“Its fine, Peyton I can wait.” Peyton nodded his head before sitting down in the awaiting car to head back to the hotel. He rolled down the window to speak again before the car pulled off.

“Go wait inside for him then at least, it’s chilly out. And please think about showing up for drinks. I promise you won’t be disappointed if you do.” Peyton raises his eyebrow and smiles and my curiosity spikes again. I really am considering it. I nod at Peyton and just as his cab pulls away to leave, my ride pulls up.

When the Jeep pulls over to a halt and I step up to the vehicle, I can hear music blasting from the inside before I can even open the door and as I climb in the car, I’m greeted by Harry in a way that only he’s allowed to greet me. He grabs the back of my head and kisses me passionately, sliding his tongue in my mouth the way I did to him this morning before he left. When his lips leave mine, my eyes stay closed and I exhale slowly. I’m dizzied by the kiss and it leaves me wanting more of him. Harry always knows how to leave me wanting more. A slow grin creeps onto my lips before I allow myself to open my eyes, and Harry snickers to himself before he pulls off and when we get to a stop, he looks over at me smiling with a mischievous look in his eyes. The whites of them are still red and the circles around them aren’t as prominent as I’ve seen them, but they are still there none the less.

“What?” I can feel my cheeks start to flame.

“There’s more where that kiss came from glasses.” I smile at him and shake my head before I pull out my phone and text Laurie.

“Where were you?” I look over at Harry and he begins to fidget in his seat. He furrows his eyebrows, but then smiles and I would have missed the rapid expression if I wasn’t really paying attention. Harry looks at me then back to the road when he answers, a bit more distant than how he was acting only a moment ago.

“I was with Zayn and Niall...” He trailed off and I keep my eyes on him waiting for him to continue, but he changes the subject instead.

“Why didn’t Dr. Koch show up?” I roll my eyes and just as I’m about to change the subject back to the question I asked, we pull into a café parking lot, the same one that he and I argued in front of after he told me the details of what landed him in Maudsley. I looked at him confused. It’s a sweet gesture, but the memory it holds is not the best one.

“What are we doing here H.?” Harry widens his eyes two times the size that they are normally, reminding me of a bush baby before he rolls them and then grins at me.

“This is a café glasses. Sometimes, people eat at café’s. Generally, when a man takes a woman out and pays for it it’s called a date.”

“Harry! I meant why here. I know you remember what happened here” He smirked before he looked at me, proud of his smart ass quip.

“What?!” He mocks my exasperated tone, “It’s a date Reagan I’m taking you out on a date. This place has pretty good food. We can make a new memory. We’re always in the damn house, specifically the bedroom...or the kitchen...or that one time in the pantry.” Harry’s eyes twinkle as our escapades flash through his mind and I feel heat run up my leg and to my center as they flash through mine as well.

“The last time I took you out on a proper date was when we went to the aquarium and that was ages ago.” Harry closed his door and then walked over to mine to open it and gently tug me out of my seat, pulling me into the café.

“You let Peyton buy you drinks the other day while the two of you were ‘working’ and I have a feeling that’s not the only place he’s taken you.” His tone turned bitter and his expression hardened for a moment.

“He got me a water Harry and it was just that, wor-”

“Let’s not talk about it! All I’m saying is I should be able to at least take you out to eat. Besides, I still intend on finishing what you teased at this morning, but I think we should eat first for energy. It’s only eleven and that means I have six hours to do with you what I please. I won’t be able to fuck you to sleep and then go to work if I don’t eat anything.” Harry whispered the last part in my ear after he moved my hair to the side. He then tugged playfully at my earlobe with his teeth and kissed me right under it. For someone who doesn’t rest that often, Harry has a stamina that can’t be matched.

We take our seats and I check my phone again. I still haven’t gotten a message back from Laurie. I don’t want to admit it, but I kind of want to go tonight. Not in order to hang out with Peyton, but to get some answers to all of the questions I have. If both he and L. go, there’s no way I wouldn’t be able to find out the truth behind my expulsion from Maudsley. I don’t think either one of them are being completely truthful with me and I want closure on the whole situation.

Harry reads the menu he’s holding in one hand while the other rests on his chin. As I examine his face, I smile to myself. Harry is so handsome and I consider myself lucky. I noticed the girls that were in the café steal glances at him when they thought I wasn’t looking and though I would usually get annoyed by it, I really don’t blame them. He’s wearing all black today from the skinny jeans to the beanie and I almost want to give the girls a show of what they’re missing out on and what they’re never going to get the chance to have until H. startles me out of my thoughts.

“Stop staring.” Harry speaks to me without even looking up from the menu. He puts it down and then puts both hands into the pockets of his jacket when his gaze finally meets mine. The expression on his face is serious, but I can see the smile in his eyes along with red framed green irises.

“How do you know I was looking at you? I could have been looking past you, over your shoulder. You’re a little cocky baby.” I sip the water that the waiter places in front of us on the table and H. grins at me again before he starts to talk to the waiter, ordering enough for the both of us, plus a third party. I immediately become suspicious. Harry can put away a lot of food but, that was ridiculous. The waiter walks away and when he’s out of earshot Harry replies to my comment.

“My cocky is nowhere near little and we both know it love,” He grins like the imp that he is then cocks an eyebrow while looking at me over the rim of his glass as he tilts it back to drink his water. When he puts the glass down he shrugs nonchalantly and continues, “I can always feel you looking at me. I felt it the first time I met you and you were staring, now is no different.”

Harry yawns and then grins when he notices the blush that has risen to my cheeks. His gaze is intense and I have to look away to keep myself in my seat.

“How did you sleep this morning? You were frowning.”

*Harry’s POV*
Reagan laughs a little and I have to force myself to grin and respond. My dream this morning was like being locked inside a personal hell. I tried countless times to wake myself up away from the sinister image that haunted me but I’ve been so drained lately I couldn’t fight it off anymore and to me that’s worse than being a little tired here and there. It happened twice today. When everyone left this morning I fell asleep again. I probably wouldn’t have been able to wake myself up if Liam hadn’t called. I only have to hold it together for a few more weeks. Hopefully by then after the wedding, they’ll go away.

“I slept fine until you’re stupid alarm went off, but I guess it was a good thing that it did anyway.” I look around for the food anxiously waiting. The red color in my eyes has gone down, but this new stuff that Zayn had Niall and I smoke is starving me. Reagan doesn’t seem to notice and I’m grateful for it.

“I’m so sorry for not waking you up. What does this mean for you and moving out?”

“Nothing, my mum didn’t tell Dr. Baker.”

“Oh.” She seems shocked and maybe even disappointed about what I just said. I mean to ask her what that reaction was, but I’m distracted when a waiter comes out holding a tray.

The food finally comes and I try to keep myself from over indulging. Reagan is trying to be cute and feed me, but she only puts small bits of food in my mouth. She gets quiet as we continue to eat and it makes my surprisingly happy mood, turn paranoid.

“What now Reagan?” She looks at me and smiles innocently and I grin back at her, but I shake my head. She’s not as sly as she thinks she is.

“What is that huge brain you’ve got thinking about now?”

“Nothing, I’m going out for drinks later with Laurie. I haven’t seen her in a while so it should be fun, right?”

“Yeah, why question a fun night? Do you not want to go or something?”

“Why do you ask that?” She keeps up her innocent façade, but there’s more to it than that.

“If you haven’t seen her in a while why would you question if it’s going to be fun or not? You’re friends with her right?” I rub my hands through my hair as she nods her head yes and then smiles before picking over what’s left of the food.

I pay the bill and when we get back to the car, I head for her hotel instead. A smile sneaks on my face as I think about all of the things that I’m going to do to her. When we’re together so close and intimate I tend to forget what’s going on around me, including my nightmares and concerns. She frees me in more ways than she knows.

“What are the colors for your mom’s wedding? I only have a few more weeks to find a dress. I never know what to wear to them or what’s wedding appropriate.” My jaw clenches and my grip around the steering wheel.

“Why talk about Dooms Day and ruin the mood?” I should have brought my meds along. Reagan looks at me sympathetically before she rubs her hand on my thigh to try to calm me down. The sympathetic look turns into something else as she smiles and moves her hand up my thigh and stops right in the middle on top of my zipper, before she begins to rub up and down.

“Fuck.”

“What was that H.?” She grins at me while my jeans and everything that I was just thinking about is forgotten.
