The Fighter (AU/Punk)

Chapter 43

Daniels POV
We approach the house stealthily, spread out around the entire perimeter. Violet's earlier words race through my head, she was in some sort of sub basement before. I've been calling the number she called me from before but she hasn't answered. To say the least, I'm worried. A part of me hopes to god that she found a nice old couple or civilization or something but I know that if she had we would have heard from her by now. Something is wrong, I know that in my gut.
I lead my team up to the front door and kick it down, shocking some guy who's lounging on the couch.
"Deal with him," I bark at two of my colleagues and they instantaneously have the guy on the ground in handcuffs before he can say a word. The team splits up, two members checking the bedrooms while my buddy Joe and I head to the basement.
"There's nothing down here," he says as we do a quick search of the concrete space. I ignore his observation and begin shifting shelves and boxes around, hoping to uncover some sort of hatch or entryway.
"When Violet escaped she said she was being kept in some second basement," I huff as I push back a shelf, only to reveal more of the same floor.
Joe immediately understands my actions and sets to work on the other half of the room.
"Uh Dan I think I've got something," he calls out.
My heart rate picks up as I jog over to where he stands. He shifted a large box back and on the floor below it was a wooden hatch, starkly contrasting against the concrete floor.
I lift my finger to my lips, motioning for him to be silent as I creak open the hatch.
A ladder leads down to a dimly lit hallway and I jump down silently, not bothering to waste time climbing down. A man at the end of the hallway looks at me with surprise but it's short lived when he pulls a gun out, aiming it at my chest.
"You don't want to do that," I warn, holding my hands up in surrender.
"Who the hell are you?" The man says angrily. At that moment two bullets graze past my ear and directly into his arms, incapacitating him. He cries out in pain and his gun clatters to the floor.
I glance behind me to see joe standing with his gun still aimed at the guy. I nod a quick thanks before sprinting down the hall, joe right on my heels.
I grab the mans gun and fumble with the latch on the outside of the heavy door he was guarding.
I push into the room, my gun at the ready.
The sight in front of me shocks me and everything seems to move into slow motion.
Michael is standing with a gun pressed to the back of Violets head, a grim expression on his face. Liam looks up in shock as I burst into the room as he leans against the wall adjacent to me, watching Violet and Michael like a hawk.
"One," Michael whispers softly and before I can even think about what I'm doing I fire a shot.
His eyes widen in shock and his eyes meet mine.
I missed.
I feel another person enter the room behind me, probably joe, but I don't waste time looking back to check.
"Let her go," I growl but all Michael does is shove the gun further into her head.
I make the mistake of glancing at violets face. Tears steam down her cheeks, falling onto her thighs. One of her pale cheeks sports a fresh looking bruise, the area tender. Her eyes are squeezed shut as though not being able to see will somehow make dying more bearable. Her blonde hair hangs in tangles around her face, pieces stained with dirt and blood. Her face gaunt and pale, she looks sickly. Another moments survey explains why. A cut on her arm is puffy and bright red, the clearly infected wound looks more painful than I can bear. Dried blood stains the skin around the area and parts of her supposed to be white tank top. She looks awful
"Or what?" Michael says with a smirk. "You fire one shot at me and I kill her," he shrugs nonchalantly, as though Violets life isn't in the balance.
"I'm going to kill you," a voice growls from behind me. I turn in shock to see Harry standing next to me, holding a gun in both of his hands, aiming it at Liam. I guess that's why Liam hasn't made a move to help Michael.
"What the hell are you doing here?" I ask angrily.
Harry simply narrows his eyes, still staring at Michael. Liam tries to move out of the line of Harry's gun but somehow Harry knows without seeing and moves it with him.
"Sage are you okay?" Harry asks levelly.
I watch as Sage slowly opens her eyes, she looks around slowly, her blue eyes unfocused.
"Jessie?" She whispers hoarsely.
Shit she must be lucid of something.
Harry's jaw clenches and Michael laughs loudly, pressing the gun into her scalp.
He leans down to whisper in her ear but his words are loud enough for everyone in the room to hear.
"He's dead sweetheart, you killed him, remember?" He says.
A look of confusion crosses her face at his words.
"No," she says hesitantly but sure of herself. Well she's right she didn't kill him. "Jessie's right there," her gaze finally focuses on Liam and he looks taken back by her words.
"Jessie," she says softly, her voice cracking. "I'm so sorry, you have to know how sorry I am."
Liam looks to Michael for direction and he mouths the words play along.
"Um what are you sorry for?" Liam asks tentatively and Michael nods with content.
"I-I'm sorry," her voice begins to waver, her bottom lip trembles with the oncoming tears. "For everything."
"What is everything?!" Michael shouts angrily and she jumps in her seat, brought out of whatever had her thinking Liam was Jessie.
She shakes her head as though to rid herself of the lingering thoughts she was having before her eyes focus on me.
"Daniel," she whispers sanely. She looks past me at Harry and a sad smile crosses her face.
"Harry," she breathes out the word before gently closing her eyes, her rapidly rising and falling chest begins to slow down as she leans back into the chair.
Michael looks at her in confusion and I take that as my opportunity to lunge at him, pushing him back away from her and tackling him to the ground. A shot is fired out of his gun as we tumble backwards. I knock his head against the cement floor, not hard enough to kill him but his eyes flutter closed, he's unconscious. I take the gun out of his hand and two shots ring through the small room behind me, a deep scream ringing out. I hop off of Michael and turn to see Harry with his gun still pointed at Liam as he staggers backwards, clutching his stomach as two bullet holes bleed through his white shirt.
"What the fuck?!" I shout and rush to Liam's side, placing pressure onto his wounds. He looks up at me with glassy eyes and the rest of my team floods into the room. Took them long enough.
Michael wakes up enough to be able to stand on his own feet as they drag him out of the cabin in handcuffs, pushing him into the back of a waiting car. Harry is cuffed as well and goes out of the room willingly, but not without shouting at me to let him know if Sage would be okay.
The first responders take care of Liam and I focus my attention on Violet. Her eyes are opened and a small smile tilts up the corners of her lips.
"I hoped you would take the opportunity," she whispers faintly as I cut her free from the chair and lift her into my arms, carrying her out of the prison she was being kept in.
"I take pride in knowing your very subtle hints," I respond softly as I carry her out of the cabin. Her eyes shut and I panic. "Violet don't close your eyes," I say urgently. "Stay with me baby."
"I'm tired," she whines, her voice barely making a sound.
"I know and you can sleep when we get you taken care of," I insist and set her gently down in the back of an ambulance, I grab the hand of her uninjured arm and bring it to my lips, kissing her knuckles.
"I want to sleep now," she whispers but opens her beautiful blue eyes and looks at me.
"Tell me what you found out while you were undercover," I say, trying to force her into a conversation while the doctor we forced to come along examines her arm.
"Can we talk about something else?" She asks seriously.
"Yeah, love, anything," I say and warm her freezing hand. "Have you read any good books lately?" I ask.

Sages POV
I open my eyes slowly, having to force them open. I immediately regret my decision when light stings my eyes, forcing me to squint. I allow my vision to adjust before looking around the drab room.
I'm in the hospital again. Fantastic. I sigh as I recall the last things I remember. I can clearly remember Michael pressing the gun to my head but everything after that is kind of a blur, obviously I'm okay because I'm in the hospital. Unless this is heaven.
Who am I kidding I would not be going to heaven.
Maybe this is hell. It would make sense I guess, nobody really likes hospitals. I wouldn't say that a hospital is my least favorite place in the world, that would probably now be cabins with creepy sub basements. But I'm not particularly fond of hospitals either.
I shift to get up, if this is hell then I might as well explore. If this is still earth than I really have to pee.
I try to move my left arm to roll off of the bed but to my surprise it's restrained.
"What the..." I mutter and look at the dark blue sling encompassing my arm, holding it to my chest.
"You're awake!" A surprised voice says. I follow the voice to watch Daniel as he pushes himself into a sitting position on the small couch he was occupying.
"So I'm not dead?" I ask, already aware of the answer.
He gives me a small smile and one of his dimples shows as he answers. "You are very much alive."
"So what now?" I respond after a moment of silence. Daniel looks at me warily and I take in his rough appearance, I wonder how long he's been here.
"Well," he sighs. "Michael is in jail awaiting trial, Liam was in pretty rough condition but somehow he miraculously survived."
"Daniel what now," I repeat my question, demanding an answer. I didn't ask him what happened to everyone else, I asked him what was going to happen now.
"Now," he rubs his hands over his eyes and leans his elbows on his knees. "Now you are going to testify against Michael and Liam in court to make sure they go away forever, although that's pretty much a done deal."
"What about the mission?" I ask, my voice soft.
"That's where things get tricky," he breathes out. "On one hand, we could throw Harry away for attempted murder of Liam but that's a pretty loose case and still leaves the other gang members out. We could try with the information you got us but I don't know how much use a list of cops names is going to be, a lawyer could easily talk Harry out of that one. Zayn has some drug info on Niall but it's been difficult for him to get dirt on Louis and Harry. Harry's careful, that's why we sent you in in the first place. A part of me wishes I would have just killed him in that basement when we were alone."
"So you're telling me that I'm still undercover?" I ask, somehow managing to keep my voice calm. "How the hell am I supposed to explain what happened with Liam and Michael, huh? Granted, I'm not entirely sure why Michael told Liam about my undercover status but the fact is that Liam knows, what if he tells Harry or one of the other gang members? You want me to go through that again?!"
"Vi," Daniel says painfully. "I don't want you to be in danger, that's the last thing I want actually. But with them still out there there is no way you can just live a normal life. You would have to move out of the country and change your name, forget everything you have here."
"I have nothing here," I say hollowly, not looking at Daniel.
"You have me," his voice is gentle and soothing, but it doesn't have the desired affect on me.
"I haven't had you for a really long time Danny," I explain, my voice cracking. "I haven't had you since long before you put a bullet through my only remaining family's brain."
"Violet," his voice is pained but I can't look at him.
"Please send someone else in to question me," I say quietly, staring at my hands.
Wordlessly, Daniel leaves the room, his feet pounding on the floor the only signs of his emotions as I watch him disappear through the doorway.
