Little Steps

Hatch a Plan

Zayn’s P.O.V.

The moon shone brightly into the bedroom, as I wiped my hair quickly, shaking the water out. Liam, Louis and Harry were seated on the bed, on their phones and such when I decided to talk.

“What do you all think of Niall and Aria?” I said, scanning their faces. They all looked up, with smiles on their faces.

“They are perfect for each other.” Louis replied instantly.

“But they don’t seem to realize it, do they?” I continued. Liam and Harry nodded, looking very confused.

“No, it doesn’t seem so.” Liam answered skeptically.

“That’s why I think we should help them out. We should hatch a plan.” I added on. Now Liam and Harry were completely confused, but Louis seemed to be catching on.

“You’re saying we make a plan that will make them realize they are made for each other.” He stated, a grin taking over his face. I nodded vigorously, smiling at Louis.

“Well, what do you have in mind?” Harry piped up. I grinned mischievously at him.

“It actually revolves mainly around you, Hazza dear.” I said. “That is, if you’re willing?”

“Is any else in here still confused?” Liam groaned, rubbing his temples. Harry’s hand shot up. I rolled my eyes.

“What I’m saying is we make Niall jealous by Harry asking her out. She’ll probably say yes, judging that it’s Aria we’re talking about. Harry and Aria will date, do the normal couply things, and then Niall will probably want to do anything he can to win her heart.” I revealed.

“That’s brilliant.” Louis a gasped, clapping his hands.

“It would be brilliant, except for the fact that Niall will probably hate my guts afterwards.” Harry muttered, throwing a pillow at me. I dodged it quickly, giving him the puppy dog eyes.

“Please Harry. You want those two together, don’t you?” I begged, clasping my hands together. Harry let a large sigh escape his lips.

“Fine, but only for Niall and Aria. And once those two are together, we tell them that it was all a plan.” He agreed, looking defeated. Louis and I high-fived, while Liam looked at me with complete disapproval.

“Don’t you think those two should find love on their own?” Liam asked, rubbing his neck.

“They are never going to without some extra boost, Li.” Louis sassed, snapping his fingers.

Liam smirked lightly.

“Fine, let’s do this, boys.”

Aria’s P.O.V.

Dangling my feet off the edge of the deck, I let the cool breeze of the warm air being pushed by the water brush my face. The boys were taking a break from performing today, which gave me time to relax, once again. I was busy thinking up new hairstyles for the boys when a light tap was placed on my shoulder. I flinched from the action, but then turned around with a smile.
Expecting Niall, I got Harry instead.

“Hey, Haz.” I said, watching him carefully as he smiled back and sat down beside me.

“How are you feeling?” he asked, looking down at the wooden deck flooring. His long eyelashes were amazing, his cheeks reddening a bit.

“I’ve been better.” I paused. “What did you need?”

Harry looked up at me, turning his body to face me. “I don’t know. My life’s a bit confusing, you know?”

“If I said I knew, I would be lying.” I laughed lightly. “But feel free to tell me?”

Harry sighed. “Well, there’s this girl. And she’s quite amazing, actually. I’m not sure if I should ask her out, but I really want to. What should I do?”

I smiled gently, placing my hand on his arm. “Ask her out.”

Harry exhaled, looking me in the eye with his emerald ones. They were quite beautiful, actually.

“Well, would you like to go out sometime, then?” he asked suddenly, and the smile on my face dropped.

“W-what?” I blurted, completely flustered. Why on earth would Harry be asking me out? Did he really like me? I started to think about all his comments and constant teasing, which I had never really taken seriously before. How had I not noticed this?

Harry seemed to be staring at me with a hopeful looking, biting his lip. His eyes sparkled with some sort of beauty I couldn’t quite decipher. Was this fate? Was I destined for Harry, and not Niall? I gulped, smiling at him quite genuinely.

“Okay.” I said, almost in a whisper. Harry broke into a grin, leaning over to kiss my cheek.

“Wonderful. Would you be up for Friday night?” he asked, looking excited. I felt so guilty.

“Of course,” I smiled, the guilt killing me inside.

“Dress comfortable.” Harry winked before getting up and walking back into the house.

What. Just. Happened.

Niall’s P.O.V.

Harry skipped into the bedroom, blocking the television.

“Move your ass!” I yelled, too lazy to get off the bed and shove him.

“Sorry lad. I’m just overly happy right now.” Harry grinned, glancing at Louis and Zayn.

“Why?” Louis questioned, picking at his nails. What a girl. Harry grinned and sat down on the bed, playing with the loose strings.

“I just ask Aria out, and she said yes!” he shouted happily, bouncing up and down on the bed. I froze. My whole world slowed to a stop. Harry just asked Aria out. As in the girl who I was head over heels for. As in the Aria, the girl I thought I had a chance with.

This was not happening.

“She seemed quite happy actually.” Harry went on. “Her eyes lit up and all, man I’m just so happy.” Harry grinned like an idiot. I wish I could tell him to shut up, but he didn’t know that I liked Aria. He didn’t know much this was already hurting me.

“When’s the date?” Zayn asked, without much emotion. He refused to meet my eyes. Because Zayn, unlike Harry, knew how much this hurt.

“I’m thinking about taking her to dinner at a nice restaurant, then maybe a walk from some ice cream. Sound nice?” Harry asked, glancing at me. I grimaced, forcing a nod.

“Sounds perfect.” I spat, deciding I couldn’t take this any longer. I got up without another words and went into the other bedroom. I threw myself onto the bed and buried my pitiful face into the pillow, letting hot tears soak the fabric.

I was so stupid for thinking I could get a girl as amazing as her. She liked guys like Harry, not me. I wasn’t special. I wasn’t anything like Aria. I was far less than her type. Her type was good-looking and special, the kind of guys who made every girl want to pass out.

I wasn’t good enough for Aria Lubianco.

The truth really does hurt.

Friday came by faster than I had wanted. Aria seemed to be excited about the date, pulling me with her to choose what to wear. I quickly came up with an excuse, saying I was too sleepy, so I wouldn’t have to help her pick an outfit. Do you know how much it would kill me to be choosing the outfit for the girl I was crazy for’s date with a different guy? Let alone a guy who was in the same band as I.

At exactly 7:30 pm, Aria stepped out of the room, wearing a dark purple off shoulder top with a beige undershirt. Her legs were covered with black leggings and her beige pumps complimented the entire rest of the outfit. Her hair was curled lightly and her makeup wasn’t on too heavy, just how I liked it. She looked absolutely stunning. Only she hadn’t done this for me. She had done it for Harry.

We all stared at her for a second, when Harry stood up, walking over to her.

“You look beautiful.” He whispered, though I could still hear him. Aria blushed, wrapping her arms around his neck to hug him. He squeezed her gently, pulling away. Harry turned to us, his eyes landing on me for a second.

“We’ll be back later.” Harry waved. He gained encouraging smiles from Louis and Liam, while Zayn glanced at me.

“Have fun, you two.” Liam waved. I watched as one of my best friends take out on a date, the girl I was mad for.

Aria’s P.O.V.

Harry led me into a fancy looking restaurant that I felt undressed for.

“Don’t worry, love. You look beautiful.” Harry whispered, his lips tickling my ear. I felt myself blushing as Harry placed his hand on my lower back and led me into the restaurant. Harry was quite a gentleman, pulling out my chair and kissing my hand before ordering our drinks. I could see why so many girls would want him, but Harry just wasn’t…me. Harry just wasn’t Niall.

After a fantastic dinner, Harry respectfully paid the bill, then escorted me from the restaurant, and out onto the streets of Paris.

“It’s such a beautiful night.” Harry smiled, our shoulder brushing against each other lightly.

“I agree,” I smiled, looking up at the sky. I felt Harry slowly tangle our fingers together before squeezing my hand tightly. I squeezed Harry’s hand back, looking up at him. His eyes gave out that familiar twinkle.

“Follow me.” He said, leading me down the streets of the Parisian town, towards what looked like a park.

There were waterfalls in a large lake, the night sky shining down on it.

“Wow.” I gasped, leaning my head on Harry’s shoulder. “It’s amazing.”

“So are you.” Harry whispered, spinning me around and pulling me to him. Our bodies pressed together, Harry slipped his arms around my waist, using one hand to push a few strands of loose hair out of my face.

“You’re so beautiful.” He said, leaning in. My heart beat grew faster. Time seemed to slow down and Harry’s lips brushed gently against mine. I shut my eyes, thinking, maybe this was right. Maybe I was supposed to be with Harry. He liked me, when Niall didn’t. He was bold, unlike Niall. He was strong. And quite attractive. Maybe this was meant to be. Not Aria and Niall, but Aria and Harry.

Harry’s lips melted into mine, as I relaxed into his body, our lips moving softly against each other’s. Harry’s lips felt quite amazing on my own, but I couldn’t help but wonder what Niall’s would feel like. Not that I hadn’t wondered that a million time before.

Harry pulled away first, still looking into my eyes.

“We should do this, go out, more often.” He laughed, taking his hands from waist.

“We should.” I agreed, giggling shyly. “Do you always kiss girls on the first date?”

Harry shrugged, blushing a bit. “I guess. But this time, I felt something. Did you?”

I gulped, knowing if I said yes, I’d be lying. Anyways, I heard myself squeaking out a “yes.”

Oh god, did Harry have this effect on all the girls he dated?

Because for a second, I forgot about Niall.

Holding onto my hand tightly, Harry and I walked back into the house. The other four boys were waiting patiently for us.

“How was the date?” Liam exclaimed, a bright smile on his face. I grinned.

“Amazing.” Harry and I replied in unison.

“You guys look rather cute together.” Louis added, looking between us. Harry and I looked at each other.

“Uh, thanks.” I laughed, squeezing Harry’s hand. My eyes landed on Niall. He seemed to be staring at mien and Harry’s linked hands. He looked emotionless.

“Niall?” I sang, “Earth to Nialler.”

He shook his head and met my eyes, smiling lightly. “Did you guys have fun?” he asked quietly. Harry and I nodded. Images of the kiss flew through my mind again.

“I’m going to take a shower.” Harry said, shocking me by kissing my lips quickly. He turned around and headed to the bathroom. I turned back to the other boys, who looked just as shocked as me.

“I assume you two kissed sometime during the date?” Zayn smirked, crossing his arms over his chest. I blushed, nodding. Niall looked down at his jeans, picking at the ripped area.

“Then I reckon you two had a good time.” Louis said. “But of course, Harry and I still got a thing going.”

I laughed, sitting down on the couch beside Niall, seeing at it was the only option for a seat. He looked up at me, the sparkle in his eyes completely gone.

“You and Harry going out again?” he asked, the smile tight on his lips. I hesitated before nodding, trying to search his eyes for what, I didn’t know.

“That’s cool.” He replied, standing up and making his way to the kitchen. I watched as he grabbed a load of chocolate and headed outside.

“Hey! You got to share chocolate with me too.” I yelled, a smirk playing on my face. I caught up with Niall as he went out to the deck, plopping down on the wooden floor. I closed the glass door behind us, sitting down beside him.

“Hi.” I mumbled, trying to grab a piece of chocolate from him. He snatched it away, sticking his tongue out with that old Niall smile that I loved.

“It’s all mine, greedy pig.” He cackled, stuffing more of the candy into his mouth.

“Please? I love chocolate. You don’t just show me a bunch of chocolate and not give me any.”

“Watch me.” He replied, closing his eyes and moaning as he consumed the best thing in the world.

“I hate you.” I muttered jokingly, turning my back to him. Sure enough, a couple of seconds later, I felt his hand on my shoulder.

“You don’t hate me.”

“Yeah. I hate anyone who doesn’t give me chocolate.”

“Fine.” Niall handed me a large piece of chocolate. I narrowed my eyes at him before stuffing it into my mouth.

“Tanks.” I said while chewing the chocolate. He laughed adorably, setting the extra chocolate down.

We were silent for a while, staring out at the night sky. I started to play with my hair, when Niall asked,

“Do you really like him?”

I looked at him for a second, before nodding. “I do.”

Niall looked almost defeated, looking down again. “In that case, I think you two will be perfect for each other.”

My heart fell at his response. He actually liked the idea of Harry and I dating. He didn’t care. Because he didn’t like me.

“Thanks.” I gulped, forcing a smile to my face. “I’m knackered. I’ll see you tomorrow.” I said, getting up and leaving the beautiful blonde boy alone on the deck. Sulking my shoulders, I found my way into Harry’s room. He had just slipped on shirt when I walked in.

“Hey, you going to shower?” he asked, approaching me. I nodded, looking into his amazing eyes.

“I had an amazing time today,” he start softly, wrapping his arms around my waist. “Would you like to go out again on Saturday? I’ve got an amazing day planned.”

“Of course.” I smiled, kissing his cheek lightly, dangerously close to his mouth.

“Okay. Good night, love.” Harry said, giving me a quick hug before heading to the bed. As soon as I was out of his room, a sigh escaped my lips.

What had I gotten myself into?

I couldn’t forget about Niall. I couldn’t. Even if he would never love me, there was no reason to stop. Because I knew it would be better than being with someone I could never love.

I needed to stop this. Immediately.

Harry’s P.O.V.

Aria was truly an amazing girl, but not my type. She was almost too innocent, and so different from me. I was genuinely glad when I saw her quiet down, once she saw Niall frowning. I could also feel that in the kiss, she didn’t have any passion. Things were going good.

Liam and Zayn came in shortly, quickly huddling around me.

“You think she’s buying this?” Zayn whispered, dead serious. I nodded, flipping my locks.

“I think Niall’s jealous, too.” Liam laughed gently, resting his hands on the bed.

“He seemed pretty disappointed when you kissed Ari.” Zayn added, a smile playing on his lips.

“I think this will actually work guys.” I said confidently.

“It better.”

Aria’s P.O.V.

I don’t know if I was drunk or what, but saying yes to Harry was the worst mistake of my life. Every single dream I had had over the past few days were about Niall. I couldn’t even think straight when he walked into the room. Harry’s loving gestures were horrifyingly sickening. I hated it when he kissed me in front of Niall. I hated the fact htat I always kissed him back. I had no feelings for Harry. He was only a friend. And yet, I couldn’t find the nerve to tell him this was all an act.

Niall never talks to me. The only time he did was when he told me to clean the dishes. Not talking to him for a week makes me feel like I’m incomplete.

On Saturday, Harry and I spent the entire day at the beach. It was quit fun, except for the fact that there was this huge fiasco under everything. I almost got my first underwater kiss on that date, but I jerked away, deciding I didn’t want to have my first underwater kiss with a guy I didn’t even like.

Now, we had just finished the final plans for Liam’s birthday. Everything was set. I was overly excited for Monday, (his birthday). Lounging in the kitchen, the curly haired boy walked in, grinning at me.

“Hey, Ari.” He greeted, leaning in to kiss me. I don’t what why, but I found myself leaning away from him. It was time to finish this.

“Tease.” Harry laughed and leaned in again. I held my held out to his chest, keeping him away from me. This time, Harry froze, biting his lip.

“Is everything alright?” he asked, shoving his hands into his pockets.

I took a deep breath. “No, not really.”

Harry looked confused, but not hurt. Almost as if he had seen this coming.

“It’s Niall, isn’t it?” he spat, crossing his arms over his chest. My eyes widened. If I said it was, he might go take this out on Niall. No, that could not happen.

“No!” I exclaimed, “I just don’t think we’re meant to be together.”

Harry stared at me like I was the ugly duckling, running his fingers stressfully through his hair. “Oh.”

“Yeah…” I mumbled, gulping once more.

“So, do you think we should just be friends?” he asked, drumming his fingers on the countertop.

“Yes.” I confired quietly. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine.” Harry mumbled before quickly leaving the kitchen.

A ton of weight seemed to have lifted off of my chest.

Just like that.

Harry’s P.O.V.

“I honestly thought it would’ve gone longer.” Zayn chuckled, pulling his knees to his chest.

“I think she realized she couldn’t deal with me and liking Niall at the same time.” Liam pointed out, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.

“Harry, I think Liam was right from the start. We attempted to help them, but I think they just need to find their own way to loving each other. They just seem to be taking little steps. Once they spend more and more time with each other, they’ll grow fonder or one another, and one day, if they are meant to be together, they’ll make it happen.” Louis added on skillfully.

“It bugs me though, how they are so blind. Niether of them can tell that the other one likes them.” Zayn groaned, clutching a pillow.

“It’ll take time.” Liam concluded, “maybe they’ll figure everything out sooner than we think."
