Fake It

Three

I tensed at the stiff atmosphere. I mean, I should have known. Mother did say that this was a more mature type of party, but I didn't think she meant 'bout to die mature. Some of these people haven't had any fun since they were teenagers. Poor them. Everyone was plastered with fake smiles and enough make up to sell by the gallon.

Focus on getting through the night. You barely have to talk to anyone. Well, that was a lie. You need witnesses to give proof that you were in fact here.

Sighing, I walked around. Finding a few of my stepfather's colleagues wasn't all too hard. There's Atticus Luther, he's a wealthy stock broker that no one knows was once arrested for fraud. There's also Mr.Alex. I never found out his first name since I didn't care. During all of this, I kept having to pull at my dress so I wouldn't trip and I slipped my foot out of shoe a bit; They're tight. None the less, I was talking up this famous fashion designer, when I was asked a question I really didn't want to answer.

"Miss, would you like to dance?"

I turn around to decline, but the words get stuck in my throat. Note: I don't say this often, but he was simply gorgeous. Oh my goodness, you probably could make bacon on his abs; he was so hot. I cough a bit to straighten out my thoughts and say, "I'm sorry, but um-"

"But you must." He says back to me. I should know this person. I really should. I think I do, but no name comes to mind. Damn, I forgot. I mean, how wouldn't I remember a person with such amazing features.

"But I don't want to."

"Hasn't someone ever told you that it's rude to say no to a prince?" He tells me with a smile.

P-prince?

"W-well, I wouldn't want to be rude." I stuttur. Wow, I don't stutter. Ever. It's like an unspoken rule for myself. I place my hand in his waiting one and he pulls me towards the semi-crowded dance floor. The second his hand touches my waist, I swear a million goose bumps formed.

Oh my goodness. I must look as red as an apple right now. Why am I nervous? There's no reason to be nervous. It's just dancing. Just dan- Shit! You're not leading, Layne!

"Oh! I'm sorry." I say. He just laughs with a shake of his head. He shouldn't be laughing. I literally just struck my 3 inch heel into his foot.

"It's fine."

I do that about two more times before he tells me I should try dance lessons. I roll my eyes and say that I have, five years ago.

"I don't I caught you're name." He says.

"Well, I never told you my name." I tell him, watching my footing. I look back up to see him smirking at me.

"Which explains why I don't know it." He states with his smirk still very present.

"Layne Avery."

"You aren't related to Isabel Avery, are you?"

"I am actually. She's my twin." I say, mater a factually.

"I couldn't tell." He says mockingly.

I could only laugh. He's quiet for a second before murmuring, "I heard a rumor that one of Lady Olivia's daughters were getting engaged."

"Well, it must be Isabel. She's always been the twin more involved in things like that."

"It's just that, " he begins, obviously not listening to want I said, "Lou just talked about sleeping with her."

I keep my mouth shut, since it really doesn't concern me. The rest of the dance was a bit rugged, but not "horrid." The second we finish, I hear this annoying, shrill voice pierce through the room and say, "Is that who I think it is?", I turn around and there stood my mother.

Jesus fucking Christ.

"Layne Delilah Avery, You look stunning standing next to Prince Zain." She says.

Zain smiles and I roll my eyes. My mother is such a liar.

"Mother, I thought the only reason I was coming was because no one else could."

"Well, you thought wrong." She says. She looks around for something and I mentally strangle her.

"Oh! Your majesties!" Mother calls out. I follow her gaze to see the King and the Queen and I instantly stop breathing.

No, no, no. Please tell me she isn't.

"Did you see this Dynamic Duo?" She says to them once they neared.

"Why, yes. I couldn't think of anyone more fit to become a princess." The queen says.

Princess?

"Miss Layne, we're happy to hear of your engagement to Zain here." The King addresses me.

Engagement?

I look to my mother and she shoots me a look that explains everything.

"I-i am, too." I lied.

"Will you be staying in a room at the castle for the duration of you're engagement?" The queen asks me.

"Well, I wouldn't want to intrude." I try to decline with sounding an ounce like my normal self, because dealing with the royal family, you wouldn't want to be even the slightest bit bitchy. And I'm kind of the definition bitchy.

"Don't say that, I'll have Edward set up a room for you." Zain says.

"Oh, well, how can I say no?" I agree with the most genuine not fake smile I could muster.

I'm in way too deep this time.
